Sub absolutely but dub is pretty decent

SabotheHunter

Sub but the dub is good! But yessss finally!! Long awaited

shinji_86

Sub all the way.

Brody

Subs. Native Japanese audio carries

John Sovi

This is one of the few animes where dub is BETTER than sub 🙏

Duprie

DUB PLEASEEEEEE !!!!!!!

Patrick Dawson

Dubs start meh (poor even ) and improve gradually over time by season 3 its actually good, subs are obviously great but its a fairly information dense show and if you struggle to process subs and the screen together you should probably go dub

Rianne 🖤

This one. I prefer subs personally, but for reactors and people with processing struggles, dub just helps them take in everything upon first watch and while they’re discussing things. AOT has one of the better dubbed versions and it’s a detailed and info heavy show.

BojacksReacts

Dub is goood!! However if you guys approach this like GOT. (Take notes, have a map naming characters/locations) then sub will be good because you won’t get so lost. With sub a lot of info can be missed runout rewatching or taking notes, but either way I enjoy both!

Joey Lew

Agree that sub is better, but for the sake of the reaction watchalongs - I’d probably only tune in for the duv

RuinerPrime

Dubs. Easier to follow for viewers and the reactors.

Eddie Stange

The DUB is soooo good for an anime. And considering they have watched all other shows with DUB, I just feel they would enjoy it this way.

Adams

the orginal japanese voices hit different

TinCan Cosmanaut

Dubs Maple and Ariana can talk to each other, Subs your gonna have to keep your eyes one the screen. Its really up to you guys and the experience you want.

Kliphord

Preferably sub but dub is easier to follow I guess.

T.wiley

Always dubs for anime starters

Chris Thompson

This starting after Band of Brothers?

Owen

"If I wanted to read the show, I'd buy the manga." Dubs for life.

T.wiley

Definitely takes all your effort to keep focus on the subs. Kind of rough if you wanna watch and chill

Otavio Rodrigues

I understand why people like the dub version I really do. But for me listening to it in Japanese is a whole different experience. The voice actors are insanely good. I couldn’t recommend it enough. Anyway whatever you choose I’ll be happy to watch the reactions :)

Faeginn

Subs, the English dub isn't great for this other than a couple of monologues

Kage Uzumaki

of course sub people are going to have there say

Kage Uzumaki

because it isn't bad if you have a japanese person say a simple statement people who like sub think it's God tier when in fact the voice actor doesn't have to put effort into it.

Kage Uzumaki

I don't understand why there's a poll people like sub and don't understand that japanese language has emotion in it even when stating simple things

Otavio Rodrigues

What ?? To say the actors didn’t put any effort to it is generalizing so much and not true at all… And I never said it’s god tier I just enjoy it way more than the dub version.

Joe Blankenship

For me, I don't mind the dubs. I'll probably watch the dub even if yall watch the sub. I've watched it both ways. Being able to walk away for a minute and still listen is a big plus.

My new name (he/him)

I just prefer English everything. I even watch Squid Game in English.

Nik

Dub is actually good, and since attack on titan has a lot of info it will be easier to follow, the anime fans think these multi million dollar companies don't try to make their dub sounds good and that the dub quality is the same like in the 70's from the Kung fu movies

Cornelius Ukena

both are great! unsurprisingly the subs are probably going to be a bit better *if* you're accustomed to watching anime in japanese. this show in particular has a tendency to overlap dialogue which can be very difficult to track if you're not used it. and this show is real crunchy on details and nuance. for most native english speakers and first time watchers, dubs are usually going to help with understanding the nuances of what's being said. people get emotional about sub v dub but don't consider that they either watch one over the other a lot and are used to it and that other's might be better served by departing from their preference. i've gotten the impression that maple and arianna don't watch a lot of anime and for that reason i would *strongly* recommend the dubs. some people will probably be mean about it either way though. all that said, super excited for an new AoT reaction! not a lot of those still coming out and it's one hell of a ride.

Kage Uzumaki

I'm not saying you said that it's a oversimplification of why people like sub, also people for some reason don't understand how languages work, when I say they don't put effort I'm not saying they don't I'm saying they don't have to try and it will sound like they are putting alot of effort into it when in fact they aren't. I like both but can't fathom sub people thinking it's superior beside the fact that it is original.

FW27

Sub and dub are both quality experiences imo. There is more raw emotion in sub without a doubt. Dub is probably more digestible and offer slightly more clarity in the content. I think chatting during the episode might be easier with the dub just because you don’t have to be locked in on the screen as intently. But it’s all up to you all, I love both versions of AoT.

Mohammed

Sub please 🙏

Darth Jafar

SUB.... for DEMON SLAYER

Decimus

In my opinion in regards to a reaction channel I feel dub is the only option.

Joey the Worm

Personally I watch sub but do whatever makes it more enjoyable!

Jose Ulysses Rivera

dub voice actors are underrated for this show ! DUB ALL THE WAY

Adam Vialpando

I am a total dub person if it's available for that show. The only reason I watch sub version is if the Japanese VAs are just so insanely good or the English VAs are just so insanely bad. Attack on Titan is the former case so I say go for the subbed version.

Com1xguy

I think the Crunchyroll Sub is the best translation, unless there is another version out there I don't know about.

Jesse S

Sub is very good.

TalbertInc

People are talking about the quality of the VA, while both are very good and sub might be better, the dialogue is just written better in dub since it had actual writers instead of just translated subtitles. Just my two cents, the quality of writing and the scenes hit harder in dub. It feels weird (especially as a non-anime watching person) to hear Japanese VA which, while good, is paired with pretty sub-par translated writing that feels wooden.

Norrin Radd

It’s the same thing for MHA and FMAB. The writing in the English dub is so much better for an English speaker. The translation for the subs are not as natural and intuitive. I prefer the English dub because it’s the only language I speak and understand.

jtingy

I look at it this way, in the 90s and early 2000s sub was superior just do to va quality in the states. Now va is good enough and i don't speak Japanese so i cant tell if a subbed anime is good or not so I just go with what is easiest to watch which is dubbed.

Supa Games

Oh naw if we getting into AoT we gotta go sub AoT one of the anime where I don’t mind the dub either tho, but I’d still def choose the sub here

Sevenpsych

I'm dying thinking about 90 episodes.

Violet Wolf

I've watched several reactions to AoT and other animes and it always feels like subs is a worse time for people following the story while trying to react. I feel like people needing to read the subtitles to follow what's happening can really impact the quality of analysis/reactions because of the extra layers of vocal nuance you're missing. This show is complicated enough even with the more native-english translation haha. The dub is really pretty good for AoT and doesn't have the issues with translation and VA emotions that a lot of others can have. Looking forward to checking out the reactions either way :)

Luke

Except a reaction and watching at home is different. When an anime has a good dub, dub is generally better for reactions because reactors are more likely to actually pick up the little details. This is especially true for later seasons when it gets complicated. On a rewatch tho, sub all the way.

Kyle

I'd say sub for the voice acting alone.

Woz Lee

Subs, always subs.

Cyber

Crunchyroll + Subs. The dub is acceptable but has some REALLY bad choices in some voice acting... it's not as good as the sub, and the sub has insanely better voice acting... and the emotional performance there is significantly better... The sub translations on crunchy roll are decent and some of the way things are written are intentionally worded to avoid spoiling things and setting up stories ... the english dub ruined a few key story/performance moments for back then and even pre-spoiled some stuff ahead of time... so much so that i repressed it

Cyber

I argue that it's best to watch in sub and react to it and if htere's any plotline that needs to be revisited in english for SOME REASON, then they can opt in to watch it at their own time after , similar to what they sometimes did for demon slayer and solo leveling in english for rewatches offline, but for reactions, i argue subs all the way

Cyber

you had me confused in the first part lol, i only realized at the last couple of words that you were saying "ALTHOUGH you were a dub person, you believe AoT sub is the better watch"

Cyber

a lot of voice actors that they loved or might love in active shows, also voice AoT and their VA in sub is really good and it's also nice to see their reactions to the orginal material... yes dub is decent, but mostly forr second watches... the dub ruined too many moments in terms of over-yapping words in a robotic way than the feel of the scene.

Adam Vialpando

Also true. I do think the voices themselves are better performed in the sub, many people don't truly realize how much is lost in translation with subs. Just the nature of condensing speech into something easy to read while not detracting from the action is something people take for granted. I highly recommend people check out Sarah Moon for in-depth looks at this stuff

Adam Vialpando

I used to think purely in that way until I realized how superior dubs are from a writing standpoint. The amount that is lost in translation with subs is hard to realize unless you actually know the language. A great YouTuber named Sarah Moon goes over stuff like this. She demonstrated this by taking one of my favorite shows, Bojack Horseman, and showing the japanese sub and dub and how they differ. And the dub was way more accurate to the tone and writing of Bojack Horseman, which utilizes a lot of English wordplay in it's dialogue. Even things like general word tone and meaning can be lost.

Adam Vialpando

Yeah I tend to make things overly confusing. And honestly I'm not even 100% sure anymore since many commenters are making great cases for dub.

Woz Lee

I completely disagree. I started watching the series with the sub because the dub wasn't out yet and loved it, but then after the insane 5 year hiatus or whatever it was I completely forgot most of the plot points, and wanted to refresh my memory whilst working so re-watched using the dub, so I didn't have to focus on the screen all the time. The difference in quality between the voice acting is jarring, and sometimes borders on cringe with the dub. I want so badly to go into examples but don't want to risk spoilers for anyone, but one I think I can say is the Titans? In the sub their roar is guttural, and fits perfectly, in the dub it's a weird high-pitched whining which might pass if you never heard the original but becomes more and more irritating if you have. I also disagree that it's written better, I think a lot of nuance is lost in the dub. Eren's answer to "Why do you want to go outside" in the dub is just cringe, whereas in the sub it's actually impactful. Erwen asking his men to "give your hearts!" tells you much more about him as a leader than the dubs "Do not falter!" The subs are translated to be as accurate to the source material as possible, which if done by an AI or someone that doesn't really understand the assignment can have mixed results, but if done well (and every AOT sub I have seen has been exceptional) then it's going to be as close as you're going to get without learning Japanese. What you're picking up on is not better writing, it's localization, which is only done in order to maximize the market potential of the product to make it appealing to people who would ordinarily have no interest in the product. Which is why every protagonist from Funimation starts out sounding like Ash Ketchum, and whilst that's not a problem for a lot of animes where the audience skews younger or has a lighter setting, for Attack on Titan it is jarringly bad. In fairness, it got slightly better over time, but it's a slow process and never hits the heights of the original actors.

Woz Lee

For most people I would agree that reading subs whilst reacting would probably be an issue, however Arianna and Maple are ADHD personified at the best of times, and will regularly have full conversations about fedoras, baskets or lamps whilst still keeping track of the show. I think the reason they have no issue doing that is because they always have subtitles on.

Spencer

I actually prefer a couple VA's in the dub, but the sub do be the way overall

kyle

found the one that was nervous to read aloud in class

Faeginn

Yeah that's the exact scene I was thinking of, other than that you lose a lot of the emotion and things just don't translate well directly. Unlike FMAB or Mob Psycho where imo the dub is actually better

Elesh

OMG IT'S HAPPENING EVERYONE STAY CALM

Elesh

No need to be a jerk. You're a vocal minority as the vote results show, accept defeat and move on.

Nako

whatever the gals prefer yo

Mike

Whichever you prefer but I have a follow up question, are you actually even watching anime if you watch it dubbed?? 😂

7777

Yes of course

Otavio Rodrigues

I understand your point i really do. But the anime is Japanese not american. It's supposed to be different. At the end of the day, it's a choice between the easier more digestible experience, or the best experience. And don't get me wrong dubs are fine, you just loose a lot of the anime in my view.

Mannygogou

First time should be subs... And then watch it as many times you want in whatever and in any order etc. But first time, why not experience it properly? Also if you want to save and archive your work for possible continued monetization, why not do something you can be proud of.

Mannygogou

Comparing reactors doesn't work because they are different people. Let's say one is quicker to understand things... or one is more authentic. Or you just like one more than another. It's not whether it's subbed or dubbed, it's how they approach the show. It's all about mindset. And then there's the first time experience. Dubbed is filtered and altered and repackaged. It's Weternized by changing the language and the actors. It also changes what the writer intended because it has to be rewritten for the new production. For an authentic first time experience it should be the original show which is subbed. Next we have to ask whose experience are we worried about? Our experience as viewers is that we're watching the experience of someone else. But it's their first time seeing it and for me I don't want to rob them of the original experience. But yes sub vs dub will be endlessly debated. Also if it's about monetization for the channel... then that adds another layer.

Mannygogou

For me I like watching the subtitles... which means hearing the original actors. But let's think about monetization for the channel. What if they watch the episode the first time subtitled in Japanese and then the watch it again dubbed in English. How much work is this? It's less than twice the work because the 2nd time is less work but they get to upload twice the videos. Twice the content for less than twice the work. Does anyone want to work a little more for double the pay, yes? It doesn't translate directly to pay but you get the idea. It will take twice as long to watch it twice... but if you already know ahead of time then you come to work expecting it so it's normal. Also editing usually takes longer, that's more work... but editing can be consolidated and likely will take less work than editing two different separate shows. There could even be cheats like doing the same video edit, just change the audio - but maybe not be too blatant about it, probably best if the uploads are slightly different. But 2 uploads and twice the possible monetization. Also after a few times doing this, one may be the clear winner in views and so work could be adjusted to accommodate, like less work done on the one that get fewer views. This would please both sides of the audience. Yes it's more work but possibly twice the pay. Work is work, pay is pay. The ultimate cheat is to never tell the audience what language the reactors are watching... and have the subtitles on and have the viewer select the audio language. As long as the audience never knows... (but of course they can tell from comprehension of the reactors, there will be subtle and obvious clues (which can be obfuscated in edit)) but you know, can't have everything.

MJ Eid

pretty sure anime is the visual style.

Joe Blankenship

They watch American stuff dubbed into Japanese, ya know.

T.wiley

Yup, people are so heavily on the sub bandwagon because it's usually "the only way to watch", they dont give it a second thought. I like sub sometimes but it's not always the right choice especially when it's a first watch for anyone who never watches anime and on top of that has to react to it

Ryley

I go for dub. Reading distracts from the visual part of the art, and if I wanted to read I'd just get a book.

Rey

This is definitely a dub worthy show, the subs can be a little rough the first season but that aside theres just always so much going on on screen that reading the subs feels like a distraction sometimes, not to mention the dub for this show is actually pretty good, where as the subtitles translations werent as great or properly explained when i rewatched

Rey

Japaness dubbed king of the hill is wild once you see it haha

Rey

Honestly youre right , the first season especially has some pretty rough translations going on when explaining some things that just had me looking up what was actually meant

Its ame mario

Well, can't wait for these reaction

Owen

I'd rather be able to look at the show than have to constantly look down at the bottom of the screen, especially when there is a perfectly good dub just sitting there.

Camden Marr

OH MY GOSH OH MY GOSH OH MY GOSH my vote is definitely the sub. the dub is good, but i feel like the sub is more consistent. the dub definitely has moments that are better than in sub, but i feel like the sub is amazing all the way through and i don’t feel that way with dub. you also get the more accurate translation with the sub, so you’re taking in the story in the way it was intended by the creator. i’m super excited for these reactions and im sure you guys will love it whether you watch it in the original japanese or in english!

Camden Marr

dawg at the end of the day it’s all personal opinion. i personally would take “because i lacked the courage” over “because im a coward”. i feel like it hits harder. and i would also prefer a more accurate translation even if it sounds a bit off. i want to know what the character actually said.

Camden Marr

i’m fine with watching anime in dub if it’s easier for you but a live action dub is kinda crazy lol. no offense i just can’t stand the mouth not matching

Camden Marr

erwin is definitely better in dub, but i think the vast majority of characters are better in sub

Camden Marr

i think aot is more of a show that it’s better to watch the episode and then talk after. i know they don’t really do that here, but i think it’s better like that.

Camden Marr

oh and another thing is i would either try to keep the girls away from comment sections as much as possible from now on or have moderators that check all the comments and delete spoilers, especially on youtube. people love to spoil this show.

Camden Marr

again it just comes down to personal preference. sub vs dub is a dumb debate that will go on forever

TalbertInc

You don’t believe there is such thing as objectively good versus bad writing…? There is no good writing, it’s all just preference…? There is no way to judge a script except by personal bias…? That can be your belief, it’s not one I hold.

[ZTM]

that is not the case at all...

PlasteredPear

generally a Subs person except for Naruto. i voted Dub for ease of watching, ive watched other channels react to AoT and reading subs and listening to reactors and watching all at the same time got pretty old fast and im gonna wait to watch so i can binge in a month so i only have to pay for a month of Crunchyroll. and the pausing to read the info pages part way in episodes made it really hard to stay synched up. and if people disagree with me i dont really care.

Centarius

I agree, if you're not used to reading subtitles then this could distract from the animation. I will say you should turn on subtitles if using the dub just so that you can read the intermission title cards, it has a lot of lore stuff on them.

Xinimer

I believe subs will keep Maple distracted enough to limit her from distracting Ariana by starting conversations about things unrelated to what's happening on the screen. And/or talking over dialogue/music scores that are meant to be HEARD as they are emotionally moving and add to the scene. Can't experience the art the way the artist intended if you aren't hearing the music that's accompanying the art. But that's just me. edit - Not trying to hate. A lot of what you say actually makes me laugh out loud. BUT the music!

Camden Marr

as much as i love the characters, plot, and voice acting, i think my favorite thing about the show is the music. best ost ive ever heard imo

Camden Marr

i think it’s dumb to say that translating it as accurately as possible is bad writing. obviously for the dub they’re gonna change it to sound more natural to english speakers, but i don’t think that the writing is different in any way. the wording is different, but the meaning is basically the same. i think it’s good writing in both.

TalbertInc

What? Translating it as accurately as possible would have it sounding like yoda speaking through google translate lol. Do you know how completely different the Japanese language and sentence structure and grammar is from English…? Like no, absolutely not, the closer to the literal translation is definitely inferior. The writing is 100% different in dub, and it’s like a million times better than sub translations. The meaning is the same, yeah, but the dub has better writing. As someone who doesn’t watch anime (only AOT for me), the quality of the sub translations are just vastly inferior compared to dub writing.

Camden Marr

dude obviously it’s not a 1:1 translation. they have to change the grammar or yeah, it would sound like yoda. but it’s still closer to the original meaning than in dub. again the writing is the same. it’s the same story being told. sub vs dub is all opinion based. i prefer to take in the story as close to the original as possible. you obviously don’t and that’s fine. i prefer sub you prefer dub. that’s all there is to it

TalbertInc

They both have the original meaning, literally at no point in the show are they different. The question is, which is better at portraying that meaning. My point is that the writing in dub is just objectively better. If your point is “it’s all subjective nothing really matters” then lol ok, unless you can provide examples of how the sub has better writing at any point in the show then my point stands regardless of whatever else you say.

Camden Marr

i have said multiple times that my point is it’s all personal preference lol. i don’t think the writing is better in either one

TalbertInc

Good for you man? My point stands.

TinCan Cosmanaut

lol i agree. which is why i think their recaps are so short, cuz they said everything already

Camden Marr

dude you legit responded to me by saying “my point still stands.” i’ve tried to stop this argument many times already and you just keep responding saying the same things for no reason lol. i’m not sure why you’re so offended by me saying that people have different opinions. this argument ended a long time ago and you keep trying to start it again. we disagree on this and that’s perfectly fine. just let it go. it’s a freaking tv show man. this is such a dumb thing to argue about lol

My new name (he/him)

haha yeah... I go back and forth but many times I just want to listen and not watch.

Ory

I’m a sub only person generally but aot has the best dub.

shinji_86

The OST is a character on its own. It was one of the first things that struck me when I started this show. It’s such an important part of this series. And yeah, I really enjoy Ariana solo reactions the most.

shinji_86

Which scene? Just give spoiler free reference please. I’ll be so amazed to hear how a dub version of Erwin was better than the sub. It just baffles me how one particular scene can be better than the other

shinji_86

I’m starting to think the argument for dub is purely just a cognitive issue. Very few are for dub because it’s outstanding voice acting. Most is just against focusing on two things simultaneously. Some of the best reactors to anime do it in sub and can follow perfectly fine while giving great analysis after. Always do in the original. Shogun is a great example how for some reason no one had an issue reading that. Squid game as well. And funny enough they watched both perfectly fine with subtitles. Dub is like uncanny valley in a way. It’s just never quite natural.

Seany Park

For artistic integrity, I always go with the original language of the show.

NIKSEEN

Agree! That was my motivation to learn English, so I could watch my favourite shows and movies in their original language :D

trianna

Subs but I think dub should be used for information heavy episodes (I’ve seen other channels do this)

Jeff I.

I was kind of cringing at the very end of Adolescence (I joined temporarily to see their reaction to it), because for the last 20 minutes or so it felt like Ariana would have been more in the moment and emotional if Maple wasn't rambling for half the scene and kind of taking her out of it. It's funny, because earlier on in the channel, it was the opposite, with Ariana being the more chatty one while Maple looked like she was trying to focus on the dialogue or whatever, but nowadays it's the opposite usually. Ha

Camden Marr

i have never said your opinion is wrong, all i’ve said is i have a different one. please just let it go lol. this is so dumb

TalbertInc

Aight bruh actually, I am deleting all my comments to you and blocking you cause you are not worth this shit lmfao have fun kiddo

Adam Vialpando

Actually it's usually dubs that have more accurate translation. You would be amazed at how much might be cut in subs to make it manageable for people to read quickly.

tarnishedd

I think the issue with sub is for the edited video watchers, the subtitles will be cut off half the time

Woz Lee

Dude a lot of what you're saying just doesn't make sense. I wasn't going to reply because I can see how this conversation has gone, and the reply would a long one, but you asked so fine. Yes, art by its very nature is subjective, therefore any opinion or value judgement is completely dependent on the person and all boils down to personal preferences. If you want to discount what people are saying on the basis of it being a personal opinion, that also works for your opinions and value judgements as well. Discussing anything in art where you're making some kind of value judgment, it's kind of implied that you understand that you're dealing with subjective opinions, and their worth is derived from your ability to advocate for them. But fine, let's try to keep it fact based, and directly respond to your points. "Also nothing you said about nuance lost in dub makes sense" - Okay, so I wasn't talking about the Erwin speech, I was talking about one of his first appearances which is why it stood out to me watching the dub, but I feel like we're not avoiding spoilers and I doubt anyone who cares is reading this exchange at this point, so lets get into it. A few examples that come to mind are when Eren is in his dream state and Armin is asking him why he wants to go outside, in the dub he stands up and yells something like "BECAUSE ITS MY BIRTHRIGHT!" at which point I physically cringed. Where as in the sub he just says "Because I was born into this world.". Which at first glance may seem identical, but they're really not. Him saying that the world is his birthright, implies that he believes the world is his, it shows that his focus is on himself and what benefits him, which coupled with his whiney cadence comes across terribly. However; in the sub him saying "Because I was born into this world" is not only a line, and theme, which is revisited constantly throughout the course of the show, but better shows his motivations. He's not thinking of himself at this point, he's thinking about the world, the thing that was taken from him was also taken from everyone else, namely their freedom to be a part of the world. Which is what underpins every decision he makes in the show. Then I think maybe the same episode in the dub Grisha tries to dissuade Eren from going outside saying "It's a nightmare, Eren. The outside, you really have no idea." where as in the sub he just asks "Eren... why do you want to go outside?". Which again, may not seem like a big deal if you have no idea about what happens between Grisha, Eren and Zeke. Once you understand that, and you understand who Eren is, and how badly Grisha was screwed. Grisha asking Eren that from a place of curiosity makes perfect sense, and fits perfectly, where as him trying to convince Eren to not go outside makes no sense when you know everything that Grisha knows. I also remember there was a scene between Eren and Ymir where they messed up some foreshadowing. That's just a handful of the character nuance things that they messed up, there was other stuff as well. All of this is what I remember off the top of my head. For instance I remember in one scene where the scouts were leaving the city, there was a line of dialogue which implied that the scouts were returning rather than leaving, which I remembered because having already watched the sub it confused me, and I know it would confuse others. I also remember a funny scene they screwed up where Eren is yelling at a titan and he called it short, and then they cut to Levi starring coldly at him, it was a fun little scene referencing Levi not liking people commenting on his height. In the dub the joke fell flat, because Eren doesn't call the titan short, he just yells some random stuff, and then the camera cuts to Levi starring at Eren, and then it cuts back to Eren looking scared. That entire interaction makes no sense in the dub, a light hearted scene is turned into some really weird... thing. And again I want to emphasise that these are just what I remember off the top of my head, almost 2 years after the finale, and having not watched the earlier episodes in at least 5 years. If I'm forced into a dub watchalong you'll probably see me commenting every week on the stuff they messed up. "several other comments here that recommend sub have already pointed out it’s much easier to get lost in sub than dub lmao." - Dude, appeals to popularity will not go your way. Just check the current poll, and that's with peoples natural aversion to reading. "Also no, dub Erwin speech is better lol. They are pretty much identical except for the last three lines, of which the dub is delivered better (listen to the vibrato the dub VA gets on the last word vs sub)." - Thank you so much for allowing me to perfectly highlight why the sub is so much better. You're here talking about vibratos, when what you missed were the parallels between Erwin and Eren. What makes Attack on Titan so good and what Isayama set out to do was push characters to the brink, to dump them in complete and utter hopelessness and have them attempt to overcome and persevere. That's why they're always referencing that the world is cruel, that's why these characters are constantly put through hell. Erwin are Eren are exact parallels of one another. They're both won the loyalty of an Ackerman, they sacrificed their own humanity to achieve their goals and compelled others to fight for their ideals. They act as a catalyst to drive their people forward often at the cost of everything they hold dear to themselves, and they drive people forward by compelling them to fight, or to be more accurate, "Tatakae". Tatakae, which Eren repeats to himself in the mirror. Tatakae, which Eren tells Misaka. Tatakae, which which is the final line of that Erwin speech, assuming you watched the sub and not the dub. I could go way deeper in on this, but this is the fundamental difference between the dub and the sub and why the dub will always be inferior. If you watch the dub you think you know Erwin's character, you think he's meant to be this charismatic chad who is adored by his men because he's just that damn awesome, and "OMG WOW DID YOU HEAR THAT VIBRATO IN HIS VOICE!", but that isn't Erwin! Erwin is a broken husk of a man, a man who has seen and dealt with so much horror he's in a permanent state of disassociation, which is why you can put a gun in his face or rip off his arm and he doesn't even flinch. He doesn't flinch because he's not really there. His stoic leadership isn’t a sign of strength, it’s a mask for someone who has lost so much and carries so much guilt that they're terrified of their own emotions, because they know losing control of those emotions could cost even more lives. Which he does care about, a great deal, but not as much as getting to that basement and discovering the truth of the world, because that's the one thing in his mind that could possibly make all that death and suffering worth it. Him feeling this way not only further compounds his guilt and makes him feel like he's lost his humanity, but also locks him into a sunk cost fallacy where because he's lost so much and sacrificed so much for his goal, he can't give up on it because to do so would mean that the lives lost do not matter, and because he can not allow that he's forced to sacrifice more and more. Which is why before he rides of to his death, when Levi releases him of that burden, Erwin has a genuine emotional response of relief, and thanks him. With the sub, it's very easy to understand this and get a feel for who Erwin actually is. In the dub it's not really there, and the crazy thing is that people think this is a good thing, it's not. "Accuracy is not a point in your favor 🤣 have you seen the difference between the Japanese vs English language?" - 3 years on Duo Lingo, and active enough to have some very strong opinions about Duo Lingo. "It’s like a 180 reversal for structure and everything" - It's really not that deep. It's just subject – object – verb rather than subject – verb – object. Some things are actually a lot simpler. "you want to get across what the source material is trying to get across, not get a 1:1 translation. Otherwise the whole script would sound like Yoda talking through google translate." - I'm really confused as to what you think a translation is, and I'm wondering if you think that's what subs are, because I'm pleased to inform you that this isn't the case. Subs are written usually by people who are fluent in both languages, and are able to hear something in one language, account for the context and intent of what they heard, and then give you all of that information in the the language you understand. The difference being you not only get this with the benefit of the original voice acting, and with nothing sacrificed to cram English dialogue into a Japanese show. "Wat I am picking up on is better writing." - Believe me, you're not. What you're getting, at best, is a watered down version of the original voiced by a handful of the same voice actors getting paid scale (actor minimum wage) to perform the impossible task of cramming their dialogue into an animation that was lip sync'd to the original Japanese voice actors. Which is why they will often do random stuff or change things, because they can't match what they have to say to the characters lip movements. This is why the dub is just always doomed to fail. Not only do they have to translate that japanese to English, they have to do so with the constraints of an animation that is already finalised, and because they have nothing to do with the actual animation studio they have no idea if the things they're changing are going to cause continuity issues later. "“I lacked the courage” vs “I BECAUSE IM A DAMN COWARD.” Like the second one is just objectively better written in English." - Okay, I don't even know what you're arguing right now. "I lacked the courage" is literally the Japanese line. This isn't some weird "Oh well given the cultural context this could mean this but in this instance because of blah blah blah" thing, the Japanese for that line is "Yuki ga nakattakara", which translates directly to "I lacked the courage". All you're telling me right now is that you don't like Attack on Titans writing, period. Which is fine, you can have that opinion, but it's a weird hill to die on for this conversation. To me this almost comes across the same as someone saying "Yeah George RR Martin is fine, Game of Thrones was cool I guess, but if you want a real Game of Thrones story the porn parody is vastly superior!" Like, you can have that opinion... I just don't know what to do with that opinion. "It’s not wooden clunky dialogue" - Again, this is in reference to the actual dialogue. "it’s actually getting across the meaning of the scene better than sub translation." - ... why do you think some random ADR producer or an ad lib happy voice actor knows the meaning of the scene better than the original voice actor, working directly with the original animators, under the supervision of the actual director who is consulting with Isayama himself? What is that opinion based on? "Dunno what funimation or that stuff is." - Funimation were a dubbing studio, it's probably responsible with about 90% of the dubbed anime you have watched, and they tend to work with the same voice actors again and again and again, until their best voice actors build a bit of a following allowing them to move to LA to get work that actually pays something. This cycle is why most dubs sound exactly the same (because it's almost always the same 12 people), it's also why they're constantly capped in terms of quality because anyone who is good enough to get other work eventually does. However I believe a couple of years ago they were bought by Cruchy Roll, and I don't know how that's impacted them or their process. "Funny how you say “never hit the heights of the original actors” when my entire point is about the writing. You haven’t said a single thing about the writing, just a bunch of personal preferences" - My guy, I'm not even trying to hear that from you after what you've just said. "Please quote literally any line from the entire series in sub and we’ll compare how much better it is in dub." - I already gave you a bunch. "Sometimes I feel like anime folks don’t get how weird and wooden and clunky their translations are for people who don’t regularly watch anime…" - Again I don't understand the point you think you're making here. Should horror movies be made for people who hate horror movies, or for people who like them? Dialogue can be bad, and Attack on Titan is by no means perfect, the Colossus and Warrior Titan revealing who they actually was so weird I laughed the first time I saw it, "like the dub AOT seemed like some new invention, sub AOT feels much more like every other anime out there with its weird writing." - Okay I ... I just don't know. I feel like you don't have an internal monologue or something, there is something about how you are processing this stuff that I just can't even conceptually understand the experience you're describing.

Yeah I am not reading that, have fun lmao. This convo frustrated me to an insane degree.

I pay close attention to the soundtrack of a show i'm watching. I think its important. It makes the scene more emotional ofc. For example, in game of thrones I notice the different leitmotifs for different characters of their houses. (E.G. When Theon was saving Sansa you could subtly hear the "What is dead may never die" theme which is suiting because Theon was reborn after becoming Reek). I think that kind of shit is cool. AOT is the same way. One of the greatest soundtracks I've heard in any show imo

Phillip D Piris

Dubs... Reacting to a language you understand is more natural. Also, I think reading would limit the commentary from maple and Ariana.

Nigel Douglas

the dub is a better experience in my opinion. its funnier and youll actually learn the characters names properly. the only downside is there are people yelling at you to watch the sub. Not realizing that they are both interpretations of the manga and often times, the english dialogue and acting captures characters alot better than a flat translation if youre not constantly understanding the nuances of japanese word play and intonation

Nigel Douglas

artistic intergrity would be if you could speak japanese. youre experiencing the show in english regardless if yopu watch sub or dub, its just a question if you want to read someone say something emotional or hear and be shaken because its meaning and intonation immediately enters your mind and body

Even though Im not a "sub only" person, I agree. I prefer the subs purely off just the fact I think the dub acting is terrible. If anything, I think Maple and Ariana would prefer it too considering some of the reactions they had to FMAB. There were plenty of times where they were laughing or weirded out by the tropey anime exclamation/scoff breath noises that is so prevalent in English dubs. And FMAB is potentially the best dub there is out there so imagine any other anime. Not to mention, anytime a character, mainly Eren, has dialogue where they're yelling it just sounds so forced and what most would consider B-list acting if it were live action media. Sub will just have less of a goofy feel to it.

shinji_86

This exactly. Bryce Papenbrook was absolutely grating as Eren. Horribly forced delivery and over acted.

Rogue Lite

Subs would be a huge mistake. Typically I wouldn’t say that, but for a reaction channel that doesn’t normally watch anime, dubs are the better choice. Also, the edits uploaded to YouTube will be borderline unwatchable. I know the poll is gonna go the way of subs because of purists, but it’s objectively the wrong choice.

Benign Fork

For greater focus on the animation, I would say dubs. Subs for my own personal viewing experience because I try to watch things as close to the original production as I can, but I don't believe in purity in the reaction game lol.

Eric H

funnylilgalreacts just started AoT doing dubs and I gotta say, the viewing experience is not as good. The dub changes lines. They change the roars of the titans. The tone and cadence of some of the characters change. They're close, but they're not what was originally intended.

Aziemarill

I think that you should always watch a show in it's original language, whether it's animation or not. I feel like dub can never quite get the line delivery and emotions right compared to the original.

Unique

Dub isn't bad but the sub is way better and in this case the dub changes the context a little too much in my opinion. Whichever one you pick first go and try the other and make a final decision then

ginta2109

You should watch the anime in Subs, but post an edit of your reaction to the sub & then one to the dub as well. I know bridgeco, another channel on YouTube/patreon, is doing this. They watch in sub & then edit the reaction with one being a sub watch along & one being a dub watch along. That way everyone’s happy, but you guys only need to react to one of them, with that being the original subbed version.

I CANT WAIT FOR AoT

Lemon

I can’t believe you guys are watching aot I just found you guys a couple weeks ago from avatar and I immediately thought you guys should watch aot due to how emotionally invested you guys get into shows and now it’s on the way!!! (Also I personally prefer subs)
