"It feels fresh". Arianna summed up how I felt when I watched the first episode. The pulled off the reboot well.

Neal Riggins

As much as I love GOT, I think I actually like HotD more.

Dante

Let's f go! 👌

Jay schmidt

First 4 seasons of GOT cant really be rivalled. Look at the budget for both season 1s

Dustin Fitzpatrick

maple screaming during the birthing scene made for a great distraction lol

Athasin

One a week is more than fine since it's only 2 seasons long and the next season won't be until what... 2027.

Athasin

Sir Otto (the King's Hand) is also Luna Lovegood's dad

Kevin Landon

Arianna's litImtle robot dance move she always does cracks me up! Im gonn try and rewatch this with ya'll as i was super blazed throughout my first watch and dont remember much

Athasin

Prince Daemon (the King's brother) was also one of the Dr. Whos.

Athasin

The fire resistance was a Dany thing, she was special, she was the "Mother of Dragons". For instance, remember when the White Walker showed up at Castle Black? Jon grabbed a lantern from Commander Mormont that burned his hand because even though he was a Targaryen, he wasn't fire proof.

Richard B

Rhys Ifans (Otto Hightower) also played Hugh Grant's disgusting roommate in Notting Hill.

JonnyMooks

naturally maple noticed the chandeliers (they're big lamps after all) but i really can't wait until they notice the wide array of 'instructional' tapestries that adorn much of the red keep

Aaron Graham

Did the girls recognize king viserys as the evil priest in peaky blinders season 3 ? 😂 paddy consadine has amazing range

windextor89 .

that ending felt like the ending of the avatar movie when ang does that bow lol

Jacob Livingston

Targaryens aren’t all resistant to fire. Only danerys was

Jacob Livingston

I was waiting for that!! Haha was going to comment it myself. Although I watched HOTD first then Peaky blinders and it took me a min to recognize him.

CK12341

Honestly wouldn't shock me if its 2028 at this point with the way TV productions work nowadays

chris watt

im so excited they enjoyed it!!!!

Joe Blankenship

I guess I'll give this another shot. I didn't really get into it when it first came out.

SpXek

yeah the only thing i hate about this show is knowing how game of thrones ends. I kinda still hope they make a sequel of game of thrones and just pretend the icy guys never died and they do the story properly this time.

Daymee

It's crazy how the final episode of The Last of Us and this episode came out a day apart and both had a scene involving, well you know. Also, It's funny that Maple mentioned Monty Python again, because the first time I watched this, I just kept saying, "Damn, the guy playing Daemon looks like Michael Palin!" (He was one of the Pythons, he played Ser Galahad in Holy Grail)

Edric Storm

Emma didnt say "HEEE HEEE HEEE"

Athasin

GoT ending was amazing, Dany, her allies, and Cersei's enemies sailing to Westeros while Cersei is being crowned as Queen. It's unfortunate they never finished it and we never got to see that showdown but at least it ended on a hopeful note.

SpXek

haha thought you were being serious for a sec

PurportedGrey

Sadly SpXek, they canceled the Jon Snow show, and there's no plans to make a sequel show besides that.

PurportedGrey

Yeah, that’s probably the worst part of Dany’s story—the show made it seem like all Targaryens are immune to fire, when in reality, it was only her, and it was supposed to be a one-off, magical moment tied to the mysterious ritual of birthing dragons. From what I understand, Targaryens do have some slight heat resistance in the books, but it’s more like, “I can hover my hand over a flame for five minutes before it starts to hurt,” not full-on fireproof. Still, for comedic reasons, I would’ve loved to see Dany walking around bald, slowly regrowing her hair each season in Game of Thrones, it's one of the funnier parts of ASOIAF for me.

PurportedGrey

To be fair, a hot object isn't REALLY fire.😂 All jokes aside, early on before I got super into the books and the lore, and when I first found R+L in S2, I was still brainwashed by the Targaryen fireproof propaganda the show pushes, and was like "nah there's no way Jon is a secret Targ, he got burned".

PurportedGrey

I would kind of agree, if S2 wasn't cut down 2 episodes, and also a complete mess on par with S6/S7 of GOT with its characters decision making and bastardized storylines.

PurportedGrey

100%, I'll always be a diehard book fan, but I was very skeptical of this especially since the Long Night show was canceled after HBO watched the pilot they filmed. But this season was on par with like S1/4 in the GOT comparitive scale.😂

PurportedGrey

This was a stellar first episode—it did a great job setting the narrative and introducing us to the key characters. I only have a couple of complaints. First, Aegon’s dagger. I love the idea that the Conquest was driven by a prophecy and dragon dreams, but I’m not a fan of how it ties into the Game of Thrones ending. Second—and I want to be clear—I have no issue with the Velaryons being portrayed as Black or being Black in the lore. It actually makes a lot of sense. They're a powerful trading and seafaring house, and the Summer Islanders (a Black civilization in the books) are also renowned for maritime trade. It’s completely plausible that the Velaryons could have intermarried with nobles from the Summer Isles during a trade expedition—or vice versa. The casting is fantastic, especially Steve Toussaint as Corlys. He absolutely embodies the legendary adventurer I imagined—a man who sailed across the known world and had a book written about his journeys. That said, my nitpick is with the internal logic of the world-building. If the Velaryons are Black, then figures like King Jaehaerys and others in the Targaryen bloodline should appear biracial to some degree. Jaehaerys’ mother was a Velaryon (and I believe his great-grandmother was too—the families are deeply intertwined), and he married his sister. Viserys’ father also married his sister, and Viserys himself married his Targaryen/Arryn cousin (whose mother was a child of Jaehaerys and her father an Arryn). So, genetically speaking, the Targaryens should be showing some visible melanin if they descend from the same Velaryon line as Corlys and his immediate family. Racebending characters in media for me is ok as long as you write it to make sense, and sadly this show gives grifting anti woke people ammunition to spread their awful takes about progressive ideas and themes in media/the world. This kind of oversight is also something I pointed out in one of the Game of Thrones episodes comments too. When the finer details of world-building are ignored, it leads to cracks in the foundation of the story—cracks that only get worse over time and eventually break the story you're trying to tell i.e. Game of Thrones. It's part of why GRRM got frustrated with the story direction and character decisions in this shows S2 and was essentially cut out of the writers' room, he was supposed to be hands on (like Kirkman is for Invincible) and given a nice EP role to help shape the show, but from what he's said and what Condal has skirted around saying, is that he just has a title in name only along with being over road in the writers room by Condal and the other lead writer for the series when he brought up all of the problems for the later events that their decision are gonna cause. Anyway, hope you enjoyed my TED Talk on genetics and writing in HotD. 🤣

Pyt

"I have no issues with them being black, so here is two entire paragraphs why i have an issue with them being black. "

Jacob Livingston

You should, it is good. I still really enjoyed Season 2 but it could have been better but hbo fucked them and cut the episodes and budget. Season 3 should be huge and spectacular. Still a good show and so cool to dive deeper into the world

Joshua Luzania

My fav part of either season is Viserys and Daemon. Patty and Matt kill their roles, and their scenes are incredible.

Kyle K

Incest aside this will be a fun ride

MabelandMargaret

So the show is great, the cast is great etc etc.. The historical, PRIMARY reason women give birth on their backs is bc some royal douchelord or another had a birthing fetish and he liked to watch. Since like, the seventeenth century. Yep. Gross.

MabelandMargaret

*If you want an epidural you have to be on your back, but it's still be in practice before epidurals were as common or even existed.

PurportedGrey

Okay, see, that’s not right, Bany. Why are you trying to twist my words like that? It's almost like you need to PREFACE something about such a touchy subject so the reader of a comment/statment doesn't jump to conclusions... oh wait you did that any way.😂 I’m not complaining about diversity or saying anything close to what those “woke outrage” types do. What I said was a criticism of the world-building—that by not making the rest of the Targaryen cast biracial at this point in the lore, it creates a logical inconsistency that also gives fuel to bad-faith critics. That’s not an attack on the casting; it’s pointing out a missed opportunity for narrative cohesion and shows the writers arent paying attention to the cracks forming in their story. You’re twisting my words in the same way someone did to me in a Last of Us S2 comment section. They completely misrepresented what I said and tried to frame it as something offensive when it wasn’t—and now you’re doing the same here. That’s unfair and not right at all, especially when I made a real effort to express myself clearly and respectfully on a sensitive topic. Please don’t put words in my mouth or make assumptions about my intent. I’m not here to stir up hate—I’m trying to have a thoughtful discussion about storytelling and lore consistency like I do in most of my comments on this channel's videos.

Pyt

My guy, you wrote two entire paragraphs talking about DNA and genetics, like that matters in a TV show at all. You know Maisie Williams isn't actually Sean Bean's kid right? I mean they don't even look anything alike, but I don't recall seeing any sort of nonsense talking about DNA and genetics about that. Its a fantasy series with dragons and is set in the same world that canonically has a pussy demon. Why would you ever try to relate it to the real world? Are there other fantasy tropes that you look at and are just unwilling use suspension of disbelief with, or is it just with fantasy characters having darker skin? "Racebending characters in media for me is ok as long as you write it to make sense, and sadly this show gives grifting anti woke people ammunition to spread their awful takes about progressive ideas and themes in media/the world." I'm assuming you are talking about Marvel in this little blurb you put in your post. They don't need a reason at all to change the race of a character in any movie, show, or any other media they decide to put out. Most white comic book characters were white due to convenience. There isn't anything inherently white about the majority of those characters. They are only white because that's all there was around the creators. Its almost like that's why nearly every one of Stan Lee's characters were headquartered in New York because that's where he is from. There isn't anything inherently New Yorker about Mr. Fantastic, he can be from anywhere and nothing meaningful is lost about the character. Or like you can "race swap" Nick Fury because there wasn't anything inherently white about him. I'm so done these tourist who don't know the first thing about the properties they bitch and moan about, and the time of being told that there needs to be a reason for a character not to be a straight white male so those tourist don't get their panties in a twist is over. Being told to placate these losers is so infuriating, they are still going to bitch, they are still going to be racist, they are still going to be sexist, nothing will change that. Most of them can't even "review" a fucking movie, all they do is open the Wikipedia page and read the plot synopsis and have no ability to critically think about what they've just read or watched. And you want us to pander to them? No, just no.

Christophe

I know it was in fairly serious pre-production but the Jon Snow sequel always sounded like a joke to me ^^' can't believe they actually considered that. But it's kind of weird that they refer back to GoT so much here with this whole prophecy thing they invented from whole-cloth and wasn't in the books. Like, just do a political show set it in the same universe and don't remind people of that, why would you do that? The thinking is probably that it's for casual viewers, to nod to them "hey, you remember GoT right? You remember that thing from that other show? Keep watching please?" but I think it's so unnecessary. Everyone knows this is a GoT-spinoff, that's the whole reason it was popular from the get-go. But just take that as a starting point and then just make a good show, it makes you look kind of desperate if you feel like you always need to reference GoT, especially with reception of the last few seasons. When Better Call Saul did it with Breaking Bad references, at least they were referencing a good show that people loved until the end.

Christophe

I mean, we saw Jon Snow aka Aegon Targaryen burn his hand in the first season, it was a pretty important plot point. Not that the show remembered its own first season towards the end.

Travis

So pumped for this. Get ready for some amazing acting performances.

PurportedGrey

You're missing the core of my point about the genetics—not in a real-world sense, but in terms of how the lore of the show/books treats appearance as a key plot element. In this world, physical traits like hair color, eye color, and skin tone aren't just cosmetic—they're narrative tools used to drive major storylines. The writers/showrunners themselves have openly said one reason for the racebending of Corlys and his family was for an element of the plot to make mkre sense (in my opinion it simplified it but I agree with the centiment) but if they’re going to make that choice, they also need to clean up the world-building and address why, for example, the king’s great grandmother—who was a Velaryon—produced descendants like Jaehaerys, Alysanne, Baelon, Alysaa, Aemma, Viserys, Rhaenyra, and Daemon who show no trace of that lineage. So my nitpick was never about the racebending itself—it was about how the writers handled it. The cracks in tbe consistency of their writing and world building started in Season 1 and got real bad in Season 2. That’s the real issue. When you ignore or gloss over foundational lore, you create narrative fractures that weaken the story over time. Like I was trying to get at in my original comment, just say Corlys mom was a Summer Islander who visited Driftmark, and then bam no problem with why him and his family are black now. Crack averted. And onto your 2nd point, thanks for pointing out that it’s a fantasy world and the actors in Game of Thrones aren’t really related—what a revelation!😂 But since you brought up Game of Thrones, let’s talk about Eve Best as Rhaenys in this series. Her character is part Targaryen and part Baratheon. Now, why is that a problem? Because in GOT—and this is explicitly mentioned in both the books and the show—Baratheon genetics are dominant, like super dominant. Any fair-haired man or woman who has a child with a Baratheon ends up with a tall ass black-haired kid. It’s such a big deal that the whole plot of the first book and Season 1 of GoT hinges on this detail to expose Joffrey’s illegitimacy. So yes, having Rhaenys look the way she does, with no trace of Baratheon traits, undermines that consistency and makes her presence feel disconnected from the established world we are supposed to be immersing our selves in, which is the whole point in writing and directing. It's why Denis Villeneuve movies are so gripping, he makes you think you're there in that world he's showing you. But back on point, genetics matter in this universe because the people in it think it matters. It’s why I’ve also criticized how the Targaryens in the show don’t have their signature purple eyes, or why Jon Snow doesn't have the Stark grey eyes like he should. It's not just fan-service—these traits are clues, symbols, and storytelling devices, and they can fix those if they took the extra step in thier effects or make up, which HotD takes way more pride in but still didn't give the Targs their prominent eye color sadly. They help the audience (and the characters) piece things together. That’s why George R. R. Martin is so meticulous in his writing of the books—even if ASoIaF isn’t your favorite series, the man covers his bases and gives his world internal logic, its why he's considered one of the best writers by his peers. That attention to detail is why the books take so long and why the story resonates so deeply. Now to your next point—yes, I agree with a lot of what you're saying. But I need to reiterate: looks do matter in this world, not because of real-life bias, but because the in-universe politics, scandals, and succession crises are built around appearance and perception. Even if they hadn’t racebent the Velaryons, people would still complain about Rhaenyra being “A WOMAAAAAN” or Viserys being at first glance a weak king/man. That's not new. But bringing in an actor like Steven Yeun to play someone like Sentry in Thunderbolts (That was the original plan for casting Sentry if you didnt know)? I wouldn’t care at all. That character isn’t built around appearance, hes built around the themes of his character and story. You can cast an Aboriginal, Asian, Native American actor—whatever—so long as they embody the role and the writing supports it what the character IS supposed to represent. Same with most comic characters. Make Hal Jordan a Latino man? Sure. If it's well-written, it will work, because race has nothing to do with his character. That’s why I don’t think you fully understood what I was saying before. If this were about Star Wars, Pride and Prejudice, or anything else where genetics and appearance aren’t pivotal to the plot/characters, I’d be on board with your counterpoints 100%. But this story hinges on things like succession, legitimacy, and rumors of infidelity—all of which are visually coded in this world. And finally, regarding your last point—I do agree with you on most of what you're saying and I’m not saying we or the writers should pander to those weird extremes. I’m saying it’s the writer’s job to close off those weak spots so the bad-faith critics have no ammo. If you write it well and it makes sense, then their talking points fade into the background noise/the little sect of the vocal minority that they are. But if you leave contradictions or logical gaps, you're giving them something to latch onto—even if their critique is shallow or dishonest. It’s not about pleasing them; it’s about protecting your story from being misrepresented. Most of today’s cultural and political debates are way more nuanced than people want to admit, and the polarization only gets worse when we treat everything like it’s black and white, and jump to conclusions that aren't there or are thought up based on our own personal bias. So Bany... is my point finally clear, or are we still going to go back and forth on this? Because I dont want to keep writing essays explaining what I thought was understandable ans sensible in the my first comment.😂 And I feel like I've definitively made my point and where I was coming from on it.

Pyt

Doesn't have an issue with characters being black, writes another four paragraphs why there is an issue with them being black by the way. Jon Snow in the books has dark grey eyes. In the show Kit has brown eyes. I don't think they cared very much about showing "oooh people will get he is actually a Targaryen." I have no idea why you are so stuck on genetics in this fantasy world. It isn't that simple, sure there are generalities, but they aren't the be all end all that you are trying to present. " I’m saying it’s the writer’s job to close off those weak spots so the bad-faith critics have no ammo." Brother, there is no weak spot making Nick Fury black, there is no weak spot having the Human Torch be black, There is no weak spot having Aquaman being Samoan, there is no weak spot in having a Chilean born actor play Reed Richards. Those characters aren't defined by their whiteness, and changing their race changed nothing about the characters. Bad faith scumbags will ALWAYS complain. Thunderbolts is a successful movie, 90%+ user reviewed on Rotten Tomatoes, and they are still trying to claim its a failure. Stop trying to protect them. Edit: I really wanted to talk about how these morons don't understand the media they watch so we should just ignore them anyways by mentioning the ending of AoT, but I don't want to spoil, but I'll just say the creator felt the need to make his point felt at the end of the manga, and further his point at the end of the anime. Same thing happened with The Boys season 4.

Matilda Beekay

I figured you guys would probably enjoy it - it's an uncomfortable watch at times, but the politicking, the characters, their relationships to each other, the way the world is so familiar but also so different, it's so great. I do think it was funny when they mentioned Matt Smith mainly playing bad guys though - because that's true lately, but one of his first big roles was as The Doctor in Doctor Who and it's so wild seeing the contrast between that character and this one.

Pyt

You know what, I'm so over you KKK/Nazi apologist. I used to just let shitty comments slide, from now on I'm going to call all of your racist asses out, you don't belong in any community, and any community that accepts you is a community worth fighting against. I'm done giving benefit of doubt, if you are giving a racist take, you are racist. Fuck all the way off. Its blatantly obvious your not an actual GoT fan you are just a tourist, you don't understand anything from ASOIAF, you don't even know the first thing about the series. You just saw a black person and decided they needed a reason to exist.

PurportedGrey

And I'm really over people who jump to conclusions, misconstrue things, and label others as something they're not or will never be. *shrug* Hope you have a great week, Bany.

Christophe

I'm gonna choose to ignore everything in this thread except the original comment because ain't nobody got time for all that. But as to your original point, I don't think that that background lore really matters here. If we want, we can just pretend that Velaryons and Targaryens had never intermarried before now. That seems how the show treats it anyway, with it being kind of a new thing for those families to intermarry. I'm all for consistent worldbuilding and I know what you're referencing with George's complaints but I don't think that really applies here, I can't really see how it could matter if this particular history just is different in the show, it's not like the historical Velaryon/Targaryen intermarriages really amount to anything more than a trivia curiosity in the books either. As to giving anti woke racists ammunition, yeah well, fuck them. This is a much better look than if they had just not cast a single non-white actor for a huge HBO ensemble show. It's something you can do in books because it doesn't involve hiring (or not hiring) actual people, and the race of fictional peoples is more of a matter of debate anyway than it is when it comes to casting actual people—like the idiots who say Targaryens aren't really "white", they're a fantasy race, but then ignore that obviously they're all portrayed by white people in the TV show. So yeah, I really don't think it takes anything away from the world building, it just alters it a bit, and only insofar that it will annoy book readers, who are probably like .5% of the viewers.

PurportedGrey

Thank you, Christophe!!! I completely agree. What you said makes way more sense based on what we’ve actually seen across these two seasons, my only push back though is on the wiki for both shows, it says Alyssa Velaryon is King Jae's and Queen Alysanne's mom. This type of stuff disappoints me because one of the main foundation of the show and books is built on this deep, rich history of characters and Houses that drives all the plots and schemes, and they just drip the ball countless times on stuff like this. For someone like me, who genuinely loves that aspect, it becomes harder to stay immersed or even care when it feels like the writers don’t—look at the last 4 season of GOT, we've talked about this in other videos comments, it's quality started spiraling because they didn't wanna give it their all because they had their eyes set on Star Wars. But this, I don't know why Condal and his writing team are doing a great job with major story beats and scenes but making "minor" mistakes that have huge ramifications to the past and future of the show they are making. Most of my complaints come from being a total lore fiend who also loves writing and film/TV production. I’m super perceptive to the details in those areas, so when things are off or interesting choices are made, I notice—and I can’t help but point them out or talk about them. And finally like I mentioned in one of the comments—the Velaryon topic, just like the dagger part of my first comment, are really just nitpicks. It came with a long, multi-paragraph preface because the topic is touchy and needed context (as most things do in general) before I explained the problems from a writing perspective. But it’s not some deeply held, diehard belief that deserved to be blown out of proportion the way Bany made it.

Jonathan Blaze

Been waiting for you to get to HOTD. This was an excellent first season!

Speaking of King Henry the 8th, have you guys already seen The Tudors? If not, I would love to see your reactions to that royal court drama.
