2026-09-05 05:00 Ok am gonna put myself out there and explain why THAT scene is a great scene narratively and writing wise. And that is because if you take the time to understand it, it challenges and presents a dilemma on our notions of morality regarding sexuality. Here you have a side by side comparison of two things: one is incest which is by far the biggest taboos that we have in the modern world, in the lens of a girl exploring her sexuality in a way which is satisfactory to her and consensual in a way where she should enjoy herself in spite of anything we can say. And the other in comparison is good ole marriage sex which is what the status quo is that we are supposed to be totally ok with but except in their world that translates to Alicient being a baby making machine forced to have sex without pleasure with some old man that she was basically sold over to as a property. The contrast of the two is just put there for us to explore which is supposed to be worse and why is that. Echoing what I said, their world is not 2025 America. What shocks modern sensibilities is irrelevant in a world where all notions are flipped around. What you or I can frown upon heavily at incest to me means little when any woman owning her sexuality in any type of way in their world is already an improvement because most are treated like property and essentially ‘graped’ all the time for children…

The actor who plays Criston Cole is the same. He just had to wear a wig. He said the worst part of filming was the wig and having to wear armour all day on set. Matt Smith also hated the wig. Another thing. I liked the long discussion and theorising for this episode. But if they want for future episodes, "Inside the Episode" for HOTD are quite good. Unlike how they were back in GOT. And I know they liked watching them for other HBO series.

100% agree. Which is why I generally get annoyed when people act super uncomfortable and even kind of immaturely and prudish in reaction to any and all sex scenes and ask why they're even there, as if every sex scene were gratuitous. The point isn't your comfort, deal with it. Sex and sexuality is an important part of the human condition, it's only normal and right that it's explored. This wasn't gratuitous, it was important narratively and as you said, the contrast with Alicent was great.

Daemon absolutely planned to have Rhaenyra get seen in the brothel. He knows Otto has spies that report to him what they see and hear because in episode 1 when he made the "heir for a day" toast, it was reported to Otto who then informed Viserys who then disinherited Daemon. Daemon took off Rhaenyra's hood so that she would be seen fucking him. His entire plan was to ruin her reputation and cause enough of a public scandal to make powerful lords question her virtue and if she is actually suitable for both her station and marriage. Rhaenya was currently being courted by half the kingdom, so he saw this as his chance to force his way into being a suitor; publicly take her virginity and force Viserys to agree to the marriage. But Daemon lost his fortitude when he saw how badly Rhaenyra wanted what would essentially be her public ruin.

Yeah the inside the episode of hotd is much better than got, where thye just spout the obvious. It's more insightful in this show

Lucas

I frankly can’t wait for next Ep…it’s pure Royal Court DRAMA galore! From every direction Lmao

Going with TV show lore Daenerys Targaryen's Grandmother was Betha Blackwood, House Blackwood is one the few houses in the south to keep the Old Gods, They been feuding/warring House Bracken since the begining of time, Willem Blackwood killing the Bracken in the beginning is a fairly normal occurrence.

Yes I've noticed that there are "types" of GOT/HOD viewers who end up becoming quite prudish regarding sex scenes. Something like "ah it's great but there's just too much sex" which I always find interesting. Don't get me wrong there are valid criticisms, i.e. in GOT D&D rendition in the infamous Jamie and Cersei scene. But for the most part it's something that's difficult for me to understand as a genuine criticism.

Random Random is 100% correct. Daemon's plan is obvious and he admitted as much to the king. Viserys knows his brother better than anyone. He basically spelled out Daemon's plan and Daemon said who cares what some lord will think, marry her to me. It wasn't ambiguous at all. There was also some subtle foreshadowing in the beginning of the episode. When Rhaenyra was returning on her ship, Daemon flew by on his dragon violently rocking the ship. Showing his displeasure with her going around Westeros looking for a husband. He totally wanted to sully her reputation so he could have her to his self.

I see a lot of people complain about how much sex there is in movies and TV. What's interesting is that there has been a massive downtrend in sex in those forms of media, . Celia Mattinson does a great job outlining where this myth comes from. [Celia Mattinson did a great write up about this a couple years ago on her substack.](https://deeperintomovies.substack.com/p/are-there-too-many-sex-scenes-in)

From my interpretation, it seems like Daemon of course planned for her to be seen. He knew she had been out seeking suitors, he took her to see that play, that the realm wouldn't accept her as queen alone (maybe planting the seed him as King with her would be more palatable). Then of course he just asks for her to Viserys. It seems from what we've seen of Daemon he probably ended up having conflicting feelings and couldn't get hard and left, then got super drunk and the white worm got him a room to sleep in. He knew Otto had spies that would see, but probably didn't know it was Mysaria. And shes probably of course hurt by him and his plot to marry Rhaenyra, she probably hadn't seen him since their spat ep 2, since he'd been battling in the step stones for years.

I love that you guys are loving the scandal of it all.

I thought y’all saw right through off and his plan after episode 1. What happened?! He’ll do anything to put aegon on the thrown.

Christophe

For me, there's enough truth in what @Lucas says: we just don't know. It's fine to have opinions but I don't think the text is that clear or even wants it to be super clear; Daemon is just about hesitant enough, just choatic enough, that I think it's very possible that he's simply attracted to Rhaenyra but doesn't really know what he's doing beyond that.

NF

Daemon taking off her disguise as soon as they enter the brothel is super clear. It’s not ambiguous.

Chris Bruneau

Daemon's actions in the brothel, such as removing Rhaenyra's hat to ensure she is recognized, suggest to me a calculated attempt to compromise her virtue and force a marriage to him. he is all about the power and will use whomever he has to!

Travis

Holy shit I just realized Otto is Luna's dad from Harry Potter

Anaïs

Omg ?! I have never noticed

renad

I just realized ser harwin was In the brothel with a silver haired girl omg foreshadowing

I agree with Lucas about this. Daemon taking off her disguise doesn't immediately speak to a calculated move. For me, I think its more the idea that Daemon doesn't care who sees what because he's a dragon. He want's Rhaenyra, and he wants her without any conditions. So removing the hat is him completing his fantasy. Show Daemon isn't that clever. He relies more on his own strength, luck, and namesake. He lives with very little fear. And because of that ego, he doesn't care about spies and what they might report. You see it in his interactions with Mysaria. It doesn't even cross his mind that she might be something more than just a sex worker, and when she corrects him about her station, he still doesn't care. As for his offer when confronted, its what he wanted. Daemon won't miss an opportunity to get the 2 things he's always wanted. Honestly, if Daemon was the calculating person you suggest, he would have succeeded, and a lot of problems would have been avoided. In fact, id argue its this situation that teaches Daemon to be calculating.

Did you not notice the missing fingers hehe

I know I am coming a long ways after you all are watching, but I will say that Targs and Incest are not the same way even Westeros is, which is also much more accepting than we are. The closer you are to a dragonriding bloodline, the closer you are to being able to ride a dragon. So, the Tagaryen's intermarrying is actually almost crucial to their power in Westeros, as after only a few generations, they would lose all power entirely. It wasn't as big a deal in Old Valyria, as all the dragonriding families would have married in the same way that the Targs did, but since the Doom, only the Targs remain dragonriders. Over the last hundred+ years since Aegon's conquest, and around a hundred and fifty years since the Doom, only Viserys had any children that would potentially sit the throne that wasn't pure Targ, so Daemon is actually a much better option. The most preferable Targ option would have been Rhaenyra and Aegon as it silences any claims about succession, and secures their bloodline (at least books, Rhaenyra is only 11 yers older than Aegon and would still be able to have kids for a while after marrying age for Aegon, which is fourteen in Westeros). The second best would be Daemon (if he was unmarried) and Rhaenyra, and the third is Laenor and Rhaenyra (as both at least are Valyrian). Un/Fortunately, Valyrian blood, while somehow seemingly resilient to inbreeding, does have a madness effect, where the more inbred you are, the more likely you are to go insane, which is where you get the whole "gods flip a coin" thing.
