Dante

Yay. Love how these always drop at a friendly time for Europeans:)

Lucas

You just gotta be in awe at the sheer AUDACITY of Daemon murdering his own wife, to show up a bachelor at Court from which he was freshly exiled, coming in and smiling casually like shit is sweet; then proceeding to make out with his niece at her own wedding celebration right in front of his brother’s salad! Lmao He’s such a champion at drama nobody could do more DRAMA if they tried! Haha And Rhaenyra unquestionably close second at it- breaking hearts, shattering dreams and straight up issuing challenges being like: “take me away right here right now-“ 😂 Like I said- whole episode is just several layers of top tier DRAMA- we’re here for it. Those Targaryens and their family are insane.

Land Howard Johnston

What an amazing reaction! You don't even know how much I look forward to every Thursday to see the latest HotD video. So much fun!

Dani

i'm so happy y'all are enjoying it so much! I can't wait for you to see the new characters and how the current ones evolve

Anakin

Let's just say, Criston Cole's character wasn't most loved online, and actor had to turn off his instagram

Lucas

I can guarantee a point of the show is to show the downfall of Criston Cole as a weak little biatch...And it's gonna become obvious as the show goes on. He projected his own insecurities and his own lack of ability to stick to his vows onto a one night stand with the Princess and proceeds to make her the scapegoat for everything going wrong with his entire life after failing that eloping plan which was driven only by his hope to live with himself.

Christophe

Jeez if you're already annoyed at Criston... He was obviously naive in that scene where he proposed to Rhaenyra to run away together but I think he was still mostly sympathetic at that moment. He's torn, that's like his whole character. I'm kind of worried that we might have a Walter White situation on our hand now where y'all will have difficulty appreciating his complexity simply because he turns into such an asshole ^^' but assholes can still be deeply interesting characters.

Jon Snow’s Mange

Yeah, I’m not sure they quite understand that Criston was basically forced by his princess to do something that soils everything he stood for. I noticed this with a lot of reactors. Perhaps the show should’ve done a better job at telling audiences how big of a deal it is that Criston did it, but also I think audiences need to have better understanding in general.

ZitherManifesto

Giving a fair warning to the girls next ep some of the actors and actress change out to age them up

Diegesis

I get where y’all are coming from about character complexity we love complex, morally grey characters. We talk about that all the time. You don’t have to like someone to find them interesting. Breaking Bad is literally the perfect example of that with Walt. But Walt is also a main character. But to be clear, our lack of sympathy for Criston Cole in that moment doesn’t mean we’re missing his complexity. We can see the layers — he’s torn, conflicted, his identity as a knight is spiraling — but his reaction is still, to us, ridiculous and emotionally immature. We just don’t buy into the narrative that he was somehow ‘forced’ or manipulated by Rhaenyra. He’s a grown man, a knight with sworn vows, and he made his choice in that situation. There was no threat in the moment forcing him to do what he did. And after that, his proposal to ‘run away together’ felt impulsive, naive, and frankly delusional, especially considering their positions in court and reality. If other reactors are seeing it the same way we did, maybe that’s because the show itself is framing Criston’s actions as rash and unstable, which probably lines up with how his arc unfolds? We’re not saying the character isn’t layered - we’re saying his choices in that moment are irrational and we don’t have to coddle him for spiraling when reality doesn’t go his way. We can track his downfall, critique his decisions, and still appreciate the storytelling. But sympathy is not warranted- at least not at that point in the show

Christophe

@Diegesis, fair enough, I didn't want to seem overly harsh ;-) it was more of like an "oh boy" in regards to where Criston's arc is going ^^' agree to disagree I suppose on how sympathetic he was in that moment, I wouldn't say that anyone can definitively say "sympathy is not warranted", that's obviously a matter of opinion. But sure, I can see where you're coming from.

Jonathan Blaze

Criston Cole is a BEEYOTCH!!!!!!!!! So many women wanted him to impregnate them. But when his arc reached this point...legs were closing all over the world! Lol!

Matilda Beekay

Going immediately from "we could marry for love, not for the crown" to "I thought that marrying you would restore my purity" it's just like - yeah, I knew this guy in high school lol, Criston Cole may be a fictional knight in a fantasy world with his vows of abstinence, but this is still the guy who thought that a kiss or a one night stand was a declaration of eternal love, and blames the woman when that turns out not to be the case. There's a line he delivers a few episodes from now that I think you're both really gonna get a kick out of. HotD days are definitely my favourite on the release calendar.

Lolilie

I remember what people were saying online when this aired - good luck getting through a Royal Westerosi wedding without someone dying. Why even show up, unless to (hopefully) be a spectator to bloodshed? We have the Red, Purple, and now Green wedding. Daemon is a messy bitch and I stan the drama.

Jacob Livingston

Haha such a great reaction. Insane episode all around. Allicent walking in during his speech in her houses colors…. Oh boy! So happy that yall love this show like I do.

Jacob Livingston

I need the next episode now!!! Can’t wait for the rest of this series to unfold. And 100% agree fuck cole. Pretty much everybody is on the same page about him. And yes every Sunday night HOTD airs the live tweeting and discussions are huge.

Daniel Q

I think the reading of Cole’s character here is a bit less than generous. He is a naive little peasant boy, likely raised on the stories of princesses and knights falling in love, and he misreads entirely the situation he’s in. Not getting into the power imbalance or anything, I’m just going to talk about the position he is in as a kings guard. Yes he made his choice, and whatever happens is his own fault, but he is in an incredibly precarious position. Oath and honor can be laughed at now, and yea in a modern lens it is all a little silly, but to some people of the time it meant everything. When he says all he has is his white cloak, it’s true. When he says his honor is stained, while yes it’s his fault, it is still a piteous position. He is a common man thrown into the realm of dragon riding, silver haired, brother fucking gods. With stuff he does later, he is perhaps a toxic, misogynistic, douchebag, but I thing the ladies reading of him here is far from generous. Love the reactions though, as always. 👍

Daniel Q

Maybe it’s because I’ve spent so many years reading stories, in which many include tales of knights and princess and honor and oaths, but I can not help but pity and feel for Cole on most rewatches( To this point). Yes, like everyone else, I cringed and thought “There is a 0 percent chance this girl is running away with you dude” when he was asking Rhaenyra, but also I can easily see how some poor uneducated boy could misread his situation and just blunder the entire thing up. Idk, but I just feel like little empathy is had for Cole’s (initial) situation. He now faces optimistically death, and horrible torture and then death at worst. I feel bad for him.

Joshua Luzania

If Arianna wants to read some limited "live" comments from the time, there's reddit "post episode discussions" for each episode. And Leana wasn't "officially" betrothed. The Kings council merely said there were plans afoot to perhaps betroth her to someone important, and thus the king went to stop those plans in their tracks with this new proposal.

Athasin

A lot of people don't see just how wrong what Rhaenyra did to Sir Criston, mostly because he's the man and she's the woman, but the fact is: his boss, the woman who gave him his job, baited him into her room and made a pass at him. On a rewatch you can see how hesitant he is to follow through. But if he says no, what happens? For all he knows Rhaneyra decides to strip him of everything she gave him, out of spite/hurt feelings. Or worse, she becomes Cersei level spiteful, implies something almost happened between them and he's castrated and tortured to death. He had no choice but to bed her. He had no choice but to break his vow. And then all Rhaenyra offers him afterward is more vow breaking instead of making things right by marrying him. He's not a little be-yotch here... he's traumatized.

Matthew s

Ser Criston the most hated by Diegesis since Walter White.

BigTrev80s

I can’t stand Sir Criston’s dumb punchable face! 😂😂😂…. I did enjoy the reaction!

Ray H

It’s funny cuz I know exactly what line you’re talking about 😂

Daymee

I CAN'T WAIT for the rest of this season! It gets even better! And it's great to see that the ladies are keeping things straight so far, because a common complaint when this series came out was that the characters get confusing sometimes.

Joshua Luzania

Rhaenyra put him in a bad spot, true, but the correct choice there would still be to turn her down. We hadn't been given any info to think she would blackmail him or spite him, but he does know its against his vow at that moment. Her potentially maybe strip him of things is just as plausible (or probably less so) than his breaking his honor being found out in some other way, or her getting pregnant or something else. He still sucks for taking out his wrong choice on everyone else around him.

Spencer Wichmann

This is just the start of the hugest crash out in all history with Criston. Its a fantastic watch lol Also fun book lore fact because yall love how wild Damon is, he is truly a chaos demon, his nickname in the books is The Rogue Prince

Christophe

This is probably a more eloquent version of what I was trying to convey, I think you're spot on

IQLou

The point is that in his position, who is he to deny the princess? He was hesitant at the start and showed resistance if you looked at the scene. Nobody acknowledges this reality and I freaking hate Criston but Rhaenyra is no saint. Everyone views the "hook up" in modern terms as if breaching your honor is not like the worst thing in those times. You do things like stand outside all night every single day guarding a spoiled princess to prove that very honor. Eat a lot of shit and take a lot of pride while doing so. Disgracing that is life changing and changed Criston forever for the worse. The theme of Rhaenyra doing stuff with no regards for anyone else is unfortunately common early on although she is a victim herself. Just happened to be in the position of power in this instance which is not widely acknowledged or recognized by most people.

IQLou

Cole has a horrible temperament and is really emotional but the crash out that caused all of this is valid and I think it's good to recognize it. I'm not saying there was a sword to his head, but when your employer who literally holds your entire life in her hands propositions you, that's inherently coercive even if she doesn't mean it that way. It's like the modern equivalent of your boss hitting on you, technically you can say no, but the power imbalance alone makes it messy and WRONG. Most people weigh the power dynamics differently, which is totally fair with how the show frames the situation and how people perceive chastity/honor in modern terms. I just think is good to be consistent on these things on both sides. The rest of his behavior after is unhinged and selfish though taking everything in the worst way possible. Great reaction! Can't wait to see the rest :)

OTB

I think my favorite part of this show is how every woman eventually hates Criston Cole.

Aj

I can't lie, so many people hating Criston makes me like him more. If I was essentially a plaything for the highborn lords and then basically used by the Princess for sexual gratification, I would do anything in my power in this world to get back at them, her specifically. So, yeah, he's not exactly a good guy, but I'm team Criston, simply because I can't stand anyone on this show, so I welcome chaos lol. I still don't particularly like this show, or even this season, but it has some interesting moments.

OTB

Im with you it's just hilarious how fast it happens and then just gets worse

jose giron

Just to play devil's advocate here, in defense of sir criston Cole the man comes from poor beginnings, his oath was literally the biggest thing his lineage had ever achieved so when he broke it I'm sure it made him spun out. On top of that you can't tell me that there wasn't a power dynamic at play when they hooked up, on top of the fact that she was the one that started contact. The marriage part on the boat yeah it was just him trying to find any resemblance of his oath back. To a point I got it but at the same time the man spun out Xtra hard 😅😅😅

IQLou

I never said that he was completely unwilling, he probably did have some desire in the moment. But "having desire" and "having a real choice" aren't mutually exclusive. The boss/employee dynamic still matters even if the employee is attracted to their boss. The "ready to die for your vows" standard is pretty extreme too. We're basically saying a knight should be willing to die rather than sleep with someone he's attracted to when his princess propositions him? That's a completely different kind of moral test than the battlefield courage his vows were meant to address. And you're right that it's not Rhaenyra's responsibility to manage his vows, but people in power positions do have the responsibility not to put their subordinates in impossible situations. The vows in this world go something along the lines of: "I shall ask no service of you that may bring you dishonor." She's not evil for it, but it's still a messy power dynamic that she created by being inconsiderate. Criston made his choices and then blamed everyone else when reality didn't match his fantasies. His later behavior is completely on him. But the initial situation was more complicated than just "he wanted it so it's fine." The power imbalance made that moment murky, even if it wasn't directly "criminal." Just my opinion. Thanks for the response Lucas :)

Athasin

She literally stood in front of the door to trap him in that room. Him leaving would've required him putting his hands on her. In that scene you can see it all over his face that he was going over his options: break his vow or risk torture and death. And yeah WE don't have any info that she would be vindictive or cause a scene that would get him tortured and killed but HE didn't have any info that she wouldn't. The only things he knew about her was that she gave him his job, she was reckless (i.e. Aegon's 2nd name day camping trip), and that she struggled with being the heir. In fact when he "proposes" he flat out says he *thinks* they know each other a bit, she smiles and says they know each other more than a bit... and then in real time it gets proven that they don't know each other AT ALL. He didn't know her or her motivations AT ALL. He picked the option that would keep him alive.. only to realize that he couldn't really live with it. And I hate to say it but I think if genders were reversed, if we had a Brienne-like knight and a horny, blue-balled Prince luring her into his room, barring the door, and making it clear he wanted sex... there would be no question that what occurred wasn't really consensual.

Rachel Lynn

I’m so excited to watch your reaction to the next episode! HotD season 1 was perfection. I don’t think I’m capable of loathing Criston any more than I already do. Poor Laenor.

Travis

"I take back baby back bitch but I do say........ Mother Fucker Crazy" Lmao best Arianna reaction yet

Richard Z Herrera

normally, id agree, except his job has had a history in universe of kingsguard being killed or sent to the wall for doing the same. So while you can say there is a power dynamic, there is also a survival dynamic working in the opposite direction, the same direction as his own honor. So, for me, all of these dynamics and others not mentioned coalesce to establish a situation where...he was effectively acting of his own accord and desires. Especially given that, from what we are shown, she only kissed him once and game on. Its not like it was a series of flirtations or pressures committed by her. In closing, its important to note, she wasn't his employer, her dad was.

Ullrich Pfeiffer

Guy really thought he laid such good pipe that Rhaenyra would give up her entire inheritance. Never there was an incel who got laid with such a pretty woman...

Travis

A completely useless comment where I’m essentially talking to myself but I love Maple’s brain. It works just like mine and it makes me laugh. She’s so fucking funny.

Travis

Not to defend Sir Christian — he’s a fucking idiot — but I think it’s easier to understand if you put yourself in his head. She shows up in the middle of the night and seduces him. He goes along with it because she’s beautiful, she’s a princess and he probably does have a crush on her. Afterward he is ridden by guilt because his identity is based around honor and the act was essentially a sin in that regard. The option to marry her, while preposterous, is all he has. He had to cling to that idea because it’s the only way he can reclaim his identity so he most likely spends and exorbitant amount of time ruminating about it. Probably to the point where he convinces himself that she may go along with it. We all have our little best case scenario fantasies that are very dumb in hindsight when they don’t to come to fruition. While he’s a goofball, I think the behavior is not bad writing— I think it is inline with how he would behave.

Zynthio

In defense of ser Criston in this episode. Knowing about the politics and understanding them are completely different worlds. He grew up low born, he was not raised surrounded by all of this political scheming. He was a soldier and a knight, not a noble or any kind of politician. It was also not just the one night they slept together that he fell in love...? They literally sowed the seeds of that from his first appearance on screen. When he wins at the tourney and asks for the princess's favor. Then he's shown admiring her again when she selects him to join the King's guard. Then again when he rides after her at the hunt, and they spend the night together alone in the forest. Then spending every day guarding her. It's literally years of him admiring her, building up to that night. It isn't just a switch being randomly flipped on and suddenly he's in love. His honor and vows being of so much importance can seem silly to us, but to him they would be literally EVERYTHING. His entire life he worked to get where he is. He came from nothing, probably being told all along the way that he would never be anything. And in his eyes that was all set on fire the night he slept with the princess. Which clearly, in the scene where it happens, was not an quick decision for him. He resists. He stops short a few times. He made the decision, and isn't innocent, but he was also being led into a very difficult position. He is not a schemer at this point, just a low born knight. He isn't thinking about the plots or the politics. In his eyes, his entire life in westeros is over if anyone finds out. The only thing he has left—love—seems like his only chance of getting out of it. So asking her to run away with him to be together is a completely normal idea to have. But she didn't feel the same, she had other priorities and goals. I have no defense for what comes after this. He gets so much worse. But up to this point, he may have been very naive and a bit foolish, but I completely understand his point of view.
