House of the Dragon 1x9 | Watch Along

Dante

White worm, not snake. So I'm guessing we're team Black moving forward? also not poor Helaena getting dissed it'snot her fault she got greensight :'( the rage against the Cole is reaching pure comedy gem levels

Dante

Also "it's John Cena" and the Avatar references had me amused. Stuff like that is why I keep my membership 😅

Anakin

This was the episode where Sara Hess's writing showed hints of D&D. I never liked the story of "whoever catches Aegon first will get to set the rules", like why. Also the now infamous dragon pit coronation scene

Ker'Mhod

I NEED AN OTHER EPISODE :'O

Jonathan Blaze

In this episode Maple discovers her crystal ball is flawless. AND Alicent is a big'ol hypocrite. All this time she's been playing 'footsies' with Larys.

PlasteredPear

Lord Allun Caswell the Lord that tried to run was the first Lord to congratulate Princess Rhaenyra when she gave birth Prince Joffery and the only Lord to welcome Princess Rhaenyra and Prince Daemons return to Kingslanding, He was loyal to the end.

Centarius

When they started playing the trumpets I thought about the scene from Shrek, "Enough Reggie." Man the right call for Rhaenys would have been to burn them all for treason. Could have ended it right then and there but it wouldn't have made for an interesting story haha.

Travis

So fucking pumped for next episode

Travis

Also Heleana warned yall about the beast beneath the boards

Athasin

I wouldn't even say Rhaenyra's first two sons are bastard usurpers because there is no question that they are of Targeryen blood and are the heir's children.. because the heir is a woman. At the same time they were conceived with the full knowledge and support of Laenor, the heir's husband. He claimed them as his own, his father claimed them as his lineage, the King legitimized them multiple times (which we know is a thing thanks to Ramsey & Roose).

Christopher Somers

I think a lot of people, including Arianna and Maple, downplay the fact that marriage vows are far more important in the GOT world than they are in our modern world. Marriage is still a sacred vow/oath in front of the gods. Having bastard children out of wedlock makes you an oathbreaker(we all know how Jamie was looked down on for being one). Breaking her vows makes Rhaneras word worthless. And several characters mentioned her children even should be put to death for such an offence.

Joshua Luzania

On Maples comment about Criston doin all this for a woman not giving him action, I mean do we know? he was mysteriously absent from guarding the children that night that Aemond lost his eye. She whispered in his ear oddly sensually when she commanded him to go find Aegon. She puts up with her deal with Larys (and by the look of it, she's done it many times). Are we assuming that Alicent wouldn't be hypocritical?

Christophe

Yeah I think the implication is definitely there. The way they talk and look at each other. And it's not like Alicent's been getting any recently, and even when she was, it's not like she took pleasure from it. I think in her mind, it's still fine because she "did her duty" first, had Viserys' children, before indulging herself with Criston, and she does it secretly. Which all adds up in her mind to being better and more responsible than Rhaenyra who just has another guy's children and pretends they're her husband's when it's obvious to everyone they aren't, which like... yeah, Alicent's got a bit of a point there. Ignoring of course that Laenor is gay where Viserys wasn't so it was of course much easier for her to conceive her husband's children than it was for Rhaenyra.

Christophe

Sure but as Viserys told her a few episodes back, perception is what matters. The King being able to legitimize bastards has always been dubious in this world because the only reason he can do so is because he's the King and there can be no question as to his authority. But really, most people in Westeros, to some extent rightly, aren't convinced that a King can actually change legitimacy because he can't fundamentally change bloodlines. Most people just accept it because they can't or don't want to challenge the King on it.

Christophe

Fun fact, the melody they played, that was that the King's entrance theme that was heard in GoT 1x1, when Robert Baratheon entered Winterfell. They also reprised that theme in season 8 when Daenerys came to Winterfell. It's a nice touch to bring it back here, even if it makes the music's diegesis somewhat confused. Also, additional music nerd fun fact, neither that melody nor the one heard in Shrek, could have realistically been played on these valveless natural trumpets because these melodies involve more than just a simple harmonic series. Natural trumpets are not chromatic instruments and can't just play whatever notes you want like you'd expect on a modern valved trumpet, they're restricted to their harmonic series. But whatever 😅

Christophe

I never had too much of a problem with the Aegon hunting in this episode, I think it was mostly harmless and kind of fun. But yeah, the dragonpit scene... that was dumb and nonsensical.

Richard Z Herrera

While oaths are important in this world more than our own...they are the blood of the dragon and have been given special exemptions for a lot of things thanks to Maegor the cruel. And while it does not fully extend to children out of wedlock, there would have been ways around it that could have been taken. Legitimize the kids but disinherit them to lesser titles and lands. The Wall. Etc.

Khan Battle

I feel like sometimes the ladies are too angry to actually like... *understand* what someone is saying in a scene when a character they don't like is saying it lol. 23:40 "I know what it is to toil for what others are freely given." "No you don't because you're not royalty!" Like Ma'am, yes, he is NOT royalty, or nobility, so he had to TOIL by fighting in actual combat to work his way up the ladder lol. I'm not sure how I feel about this because I feel like they weren't this I guess, agitated over characters in GOT, and while I love the passion they have, it's getting in the way of them actually understanding the undertones (and overtones) of the story.

Zynthio

god you have no idea how badly I wanted Rhaenys to just scorch Aegon, Alicent, Aemond, the hand, and Criston at the end of this episode... Obviously there wouldn't really be much of a story left for us to watch if she did, but still. They all suck so unbelievably bad
