House of the Dragon 1x10 | Watch Along

The birth scenes in this series are nightmare fuel. Also I wonder what the significance is of the 2 deaths in labor vs her surviving. Also Ser Erryk the MVP.

Anakin

Daemon's character in this episode is very frustrating and complicated, on one hand he's also mourning death of his brother and son, and also looking forward to the war with Hightowers whom he hated since forever. Add then he finds out his brother never trusted him with the prophecy, meaning he never saw him as real Heir to the throne.

Arianna about Aemmond after he got Vhagar in episode 7: “I hope he does something badass with it.” Me waiting 3 weeks to see how she reacts to what Aemmond does with Vhagar.

Such a great episode! Love the coronation scene and the final 15 minutes of the episode is so epic. They did a bookend with the final image of episode 1 is a close up of Rhaenyra's face and the last image of the finale is also a close up of Rhaenyra's face. Fire!

Jesus I did not remember the miscarriage scene being that gnarly 🤢

Chris Bruneau

Well guys, are you team Black or Team Green??? cuz' shit is about to go down next season!!!

Walid

Same! I was having lunch as well, whilst watching the reaction

Rhanerya's relationship with her children is just another slight to Alicent because for all Alicen't grandstanding and virtue signaling about honor and tradition she is a shit mother and leader.. also, later she does other things later on that show how deep her hypocrisy and delusion runs.

yeah saying Rhaenyra doesn't bite back isn't fair. She was not going to be the one to officially kick off a war without knowing if she had the allies to even win it. Otherwise she might come back to only later find out she didn;t have enough and she would be just sending the few who were pledged to her to straight up slaughter.

S2 is a bit rough

BigTrev80s

Good thing we didn’t have to see Christian Cole’s dumb face this episode

Travis

Daemon is very flawed and complicated but for some reason when it's all said and done he is still my favorite

Travis

It's fucking hilarious that Maple says we need a witch

Anakin

under-statement

Many people at the time were really livid that the showrunners had the guy that killed his first wife and beat a messenger half to death simply for relaying a message put his hands on his current wife aggressively. Like ... I never understood that criticism. Daemon is not a bastion of level headedness and morality. And I think the anger from Daemon in that scene is NOT mainly about not knowing the prophecy or his brother not considering him heir (he's know his brother didn't want him to be heir since ep1). I think his anger comes when he sees the same weakness in his brother being passed into Rhaenyra, that is, putting aside dragons and strength in favor of prophecies and compromise.

2 things. 1: I think Ariana gets pretty intuitively that war may seem like the only option in retrospect or in fantasy, but in truth, peace and the avoidance of war is a legitimate option. Rhaenyra puts it best when she asks what is her true duty, make sure the realm is safe or make sure it’s her ass on the throne? War will kill thousands upon thousands, and while not being queen when rightfully named is a horrible loss for rhaenyra and her line, would the Hightower rule be all that worse for the other nobles and small folk? Like for the vast majority it’d be the same. 2. I swears people were giving Daemon passes all season 1 cuz A. he is a “cool” figure and B. The horrible, straight up evil shit he was doing was happening to side characters. I mean seriously, this guy BEAT A WOMANS HEAD IN WITH A ROCK. And while they shared no love, her only crime was not being his niece. Which btw, I forget who but somebody made an excellent point about daemon that he seems to only be able to care about himself and extensions of himself. Who does he care for? Himself, his brother (only at moments, his whore (who he sees as property), and his niece but only as long as she reminds him of himself and does as he enjoys. The second these extensions of himself start doing what he doesn’t like, he lashes out or pouts or mopes. Daemon is cool looking and all, but all these people who were sort of idolizing him or infantalising him or whatever gotta see that him choking his wife is exactly in line with his character.

Oh boy, my mind completely blocked out the still birth scene from my memory so having to watch that again was rough. She lost a lot this episode.

Travis

I look at S2 like S2 of Squid Game. It's pretty much the 1st half of a season and just preps you for season 3

Christophe

I think Daemon is most of all inconsistent. Yes he does evil shit but then there are moments when he's deferential or even kind of sweet and you want to give him a chance because if he could get his impulses under control, he would be cool and would be a major asset, so you're kind of hoping for the better. Plus, it is kind of weird how he basically doesn't change as a character over like what, 20 years? We expect characters to have arcs but he just kind of doesn't. He's been hot and cold since the beginning and he still is.

Daniel Q

I see what you mean, but in my opinion this “inconsistency”, is perfectly consistent in my mind. There are few people who I’d label just evil and nothing else. I usually like to say people are just people, some do evil things, some do good things, and often people do a lot of both. Mass murders will be kind to dogs, heroic icons may be mean to the common people. People are multitudes. Daemon has bright moments, kind moments, charismatic moments too. Yet these just show me he’s not a psychopath who can’t control his dark nature. He is a flawed man. A warrior, a prince, a student of old Valyria, and also self conscious, jealous, and angry man. He is all these things and more. Also yea I think most, if any, of his change is coming now at harrenhal wand all that jazz.

Travis

I'm really worried about Arianna's patience in season 2 but hopefully she just sees that it really is all about setting the table for season 3 which should be epic

Richard Z Herrera

He's not inconsistent. Everything he does is him being a Targaryen. His idea of what it is to be a dragon. Strong, willful, feared, and answerable to no one but his family. Its not about extensions of himself, its about family and legacy. And that's where he and his brother have issues. He views his brother as betraying that legacy by being too weak and amenable to lesser lords. For Daemon, they should be able to take what they want. Having to be married to someone he didn't chose is a crime in his mind. The idea that they have to play the game is crazy to him. If he wants his niece, and she wants him, that should be the only opinions that matter. If you view him from this viewpoint, all his actions fall in line. Even that lash out at Rhaenyra. Finally, its not about giving him a pass. Its worse than that. We accept him as is because he's unapologetically upfront in a series where the other bad characters are pretentious hypocrites who delude themselves with piety...or are creepers. In the end, we almost begin to blame others for falling victim to him because they didn't immediately expect and plan for him to harm them in some way. This isn't the universe to watch to be able to freely like the good people for very long b4 bad things happen to them. So like the one whos the least annoying and most likely to survive. That's Daemon.

Fans were livid because in the book he didn't kill his first wife, who he was forced to marry at 16. He also didn't choke Rhaenyra. Daemon is GRRM's favorite character and he was said to be morally grey, half light and half darkness. He's supposed to have both good and evil moments but the way this show and writers potrayed him has been wrong from the start. One of the writers, Sara Hess, has an agenda against Daemon, She said she doesn't understand why people like him. As if people haven't been liking morally grey characters or villains. Season 2 proved it even futher because they keep repeating the plotline of will Daemon betray Rhaenyra or not like he didn't kneel and crowned her in this very episode.

Joshua Luzania

I give leeway to book readers to be upset or have opinions about many things, but 95% of people watching it haven't cracked open one page of the book. Those are who my comment is about.

Why did I decide to eat a dish with ketchup on it for this episode
