rewatching the show knowing that Buster is gonna lose his left hand is so fun. they literally set that up in the VERY FIRST episode of the show with Lucille's fox pelt missing its front left paw, and they just keep foreshadowing it every other episode like Michael's school play being about Captain Hook. and the clip from Predator used to introduce Carl Weathers which shows his character getting his arm cut off. and how the guy George Sr. used to teach his kids life lessons was missing an arm, and his dog was missing its front left leg. and how Buster gets hooked on playing a claw machine game. and when he sits on a bench cropped to read "ARM OFF." it just goes on

Interesting that you noticed the seal in the back ground of the scene between Buster and Lucille. A few minutes later, just before he goes into the water, Buster is sitting on a bus bench with an Army recruitment ad, and his body blocks most of the message, leaving only the words "Arm Off." Buster losing his hand was planned from very early in the show: I think the first reference to it was early in season 2 when Buster hid in the car trunk intending to go to Mexico and ending up at Lupe's house in Santa Ana, where he discovered his old chair (shaped like a hand) and remarked "I never thought I would miss a hand so much." One of my other favorite jokes from this episode was the introduction of the restaurant Skip Churches, where everyone goes on Sunday mornings, and the Asian restaurant Miss Temple, where folks of the Jewish persuasion gather on Friday nights.

The weird shot of GOB's wife pointing at naked men while she's in the Army is a reference to the Abu Ghraib scandal. Abu Ghraib was a U.S.-administered prison in Iraq and a bunch of soldiers were court-martialed for torturing and humiliating Iraqi detainees, including taking photos of them in various states of undress. GOB's wife (still no name) was basically recreating one of the photos. When GOB says "I just want my wife back!" it's a callback to the episode earlier this season where Thomas Jane played himself. Maeby's studio produced a hit movie starring Jane called HOMELESS DAD (a comedy!) where the tagline is "I just want my kids back!"

I've been waiting for this Buster episode since we started. I'm so happy. I also can't believe I never noticed those musical cues when there was a splash in the sea in the background during the photoshoot and when George Sr. is talking about his touching his hand again for the last time I want to read someone's PhD dissertation on this show.
