The White Lotus 1x2 | Watch Along

Here's the thing about Shane, if he didn't come from a privileged family I would be 100% on his side. He was the loser in a double booking situation AND he got charged for it, and instead of making it right the resort is giving him the run around. It's frustrating and he hasn't even gone full Karen about it. Instead he's had to use persistence to get them to even admit he was wronged and they still won't take accountability let alone comp something or hell offer a refund for the overcharge (and they don't until he pulls strings so him pulling strings actually ends up being a necessity). But because he's so privileged and so carefree with money in other aspects, it makes him come off as someone whose doing it purely for ego.

Also, their reaction to the discomfort of everything has been top tier, lol. And I don't even think they remember how the show started. Just the interpersonal relationships are stressing them out.

i resubscribed to the patreon just for the white lotus reactions. yall are in for a RIDE. cant wait for season 2 and 3 as well 😂😂😂

This show is like being in line at the grocery store with your mother when you were a kid and she is talking with EVERYONE in line about the most embarrassing things.

Owen

Love that you guys looked at the most neurodivergent guy in the show and said "He's the only one having a normal reaction!"

Jorgalorg

Nailed it. Like, technically I'm on Shane's side but... he's such a dick anyway.

Girls, this show is supposed to make you uncomfortable, so its clearly working! :) We watched this show and both absolutely HATED Shane and the way he tried to control his new bride. Although maybe we were 100% on her side is because my wife is fiercely independent with her own successful career, so maybe that's just our perspective! I cant wait to see how you both feel about Shane by the end of show!!

Athasin

Exactly!

I'm surprised she married that guy. It seems like his shittiness would've come up before now.

An interesting thing about this show is that every single episode of every season was written and directed by Mike White, the show's creator. This is exceptionally rare, even for shows where the showrunners do the majority of the writing and directing. The show does not have a writer's room - White does everything solo. I can't think of any other series in which one person is the creative force behind the whole thing. Chris Storer directs the vast majority of The Bear episodes and does more of the writing than any other individual person, but there are other people involved (Ayo Edebiri has both directed an episode and written an episode).

I think they might play into the idea that people go on vacations and overshare because they are with strangers they will never see again.

I swear wealth is not good for people. It's made all of them into entitled, self-involved babies.

Honestly I relate so much to Quinn. I went on a trip to Florida when I was 15 with my family and spent most of my time being asocial, and overall was kinda down/bored with life around that age but then I really got into nature and now at 28 I'm like the opposite of glued to my screens and got a huge appreciation for life and taking it all in. It's an anxiety inducing comedy but it really has some beautiful moments too, but somehow watching it for the first time in years it made me feel even more uncomfortable, I think having met people like this the last few years and knowing even tho it's satire it's not one bit unrealistic makes me even more anxious lol It's funny how different the dad and son is compared to the rest of the family, I was always the youngest child surrounded by family talking politics and world issues, drama etc, it's really exhausting.

This was my first time watching it since it aired and my God I instantly remembered how much I disliked Shane. Not even close to as bad as the rest of the characters. I can handle rich virtue signaling but the mommy's boy and controlling is just the worst.

Quzga

They're in for a wild ride with the reoccurring characters, legit can't wait

Quzga

Intent vs execution, his intent is right but the way he acts makes him a huge asshole. Especially the whole mommy's boy bit. You can be in the right and still come across as a douche. If I was in that situation I'd simply tell the travel agent I got the wrong room and have my mom be comped the difference if I can't get the room.

Quzga

Another dynamic with Olivia and Paula is I feel Olivia tries so hard to separate herself from her mom and show people how progressive she is, her having Paula around makes me feel a bit like she's a prop to her and she doesn't like when she makes her own decisions

Same, I relate hard to Quinn even though my family situation was very different. I have an older brother (the oldest), an older sister, and a younger sister. But on family holidays it often seemed like my two older siblings did their thing together, my younger sister was the one who brought a friend, and then there was me. It was weird. And ironically, my dad is a scuba instructor and me and my brother have been diving with him for a long time, my brother since he was like 11 or 12 and me since I was like 14. My dad's nothing like Steve Zahn's character though lmao.
