Attack on Titan 4x1-2 | Watch Along

[Nine Titans] On Paradis Island: Eren has two: the Founding Titan and the Attack Titan inherited by his dad. Remember Grisha stole the Founding titan from the Reiss family because they weren't doing their jobs protecting humanity in the walls due to the "vow renouncing war" basically they wanted to live peacefully in the walls and not retaliate to any attack. The Owl said it was cowardly behavior not protecting the Eldians in the wall and told Grisha to steal the founding titan from the royal family in one of the last episodes. Grisha also obviously inherted the Attack titan from the Owl. Armin has the Colossal. Annie has the Female Titan. On Marleys side: Reiner has Armored Titan. New character Porco Galliard took back his brother's titan that Ymir stole. The Jaw Titan. The Cart Titan was Pieck(The black haired woman who walked with crutches due to being in Cart titan form for so long since she constantly walks on four legs) Zeke has the Beast Titan. Warhammer Titan was the last one that was missing. Which name was revealed in this episode. This is the titan the Tybur family has.

Dashi

I feel like you're both confusing yourself. They very clearly say they went to paradis Island 9 years ago and this war has been going on for 4, which means this is 4 years after season 3. Reiner is still Reiner, I'm not sure how that was confusing at all

Weey

"No one is really bad or good in this story" legit one of my favorite things to hear in a reaction to AOT and I am not surprised to hear it from you two.

Elesh

So about the 9 titans we have : 1. Founder = Eren 2. Attack titan = Eren 3. Female titan = Annie (still frozen btw) 4. Beast titan = Zeke 5. Armored titan = Reiner 6. Jaw titan = Ymir (then) --> Galliard (now) 7. Colossus titan = Berthold (then) --> Armin (now) 8. Cart titan (the crawling one that transports stuff) = Pieck (the woman with red armband) 9. Warhammer titan = The Tybur family (mentioned in 4x2 but whom we don't know yet)

Elesh

Hmmm I don't know about that one mate

Elesh

Yeah I guess they got mixed up, but the Marleyan captains even say that no ship has returned from Paradise, so clearly it's not a flash forward it's the present time 4 years after the events of S3 finale where our gang stood at the beach.

rebelgmg

Marleyans aren't plainly war mongers. their ancestors were slaughtered by Eldians (people who are of the OG titan Ymirs blood, subjects of Ymir) for like hella years. the eldians in Marley fight for their honour and status in Marley hence why they were arm bands to distinguish themselves. They want to wipe out the other eldians as the higher ups their instructed them to believe tis punishment for their history , just like what happened to Zeke when his dad pushed him too hard to believe that he's a patriot.

feinted

It is also shown in this episode that Marleyans aren't the only ones to hate Eldians. In one of these episodes, the wounded soldier who fought for the Mid-East Allied Forces who Falco was helping in the trenches said "Don't touch me, I'll be tainted. You devil." People are going to be afraid of a race who can turn into monsters. If the Eldian race is wiped out there would be no more Titans.

Jacob

Reiner: Literally existing Maple: Maybe they had to feed Reiner to this other guy named Reiner.

feinted

Also remember Historia's dad Rod Reiss told her about Eren's dad taking the Founding titan away from their royal family and how Eren cannot fully use founding titan power because he is not of royal blood. So he tried to get Historia to take the titan serum and take the Founding Titan back to its rightful place. This was in the Uprising Arc wayy back in early season 3.

rebelgmg

Exactly! All Eldians aren’t inherently evil like Marleyans believe. BUT their ability to become titans was weaponized against all others who were deemed inferior since like the beginning of its existence hence the strong hatred. Marleyans do treat those other eldians like prisoners in camps and as pawns of war. Eren and other eldians in paradis are prisoners inside the walls and the kings curse keeping them unaware of the outside world. They both fight for freedom but totally different outlooks. Eren and paradis is more right and justified imo he isn’t trying to hurt or control anyone unless prompted unlike others.

Sky Alderson

Crazy plot twist that this guy named Reiner being the armored titan is in fact the character we knew as Reiner, being the armored titan. We can never know what will happen with this show.

jose giron

Man yall need to pay attention a bit more 😂😂 this show requires supreme attention, especially the last few episodes of season 3 and the 1st few episodes of season 4.

Sky Alderson

"No one is really good in this story" would be more accurate tbf. But there are differences between victims of propaganda since childhood and a genocidal maniac for instance.

PB

at this point for who is what: Eren is the attack titan AND the founding titan Armin is the colossal Annie is the female Reiner is the armor Zeik is the beast Peak is the cart (the one on 4 legs) Galliard is the jaw (the one who eat Yimir) the warhammer titan have only been mentionned.

Styles

I think you guys truly just need one rewatch of those last few episodes of season 3 to fully grasp it. You guys didn't have to wait years for season 4 so naturally going episode to episode without that gap to dive into the lore could be disorienting, plus the founder is in eren which grisha took from the royal family that was held by frida who ate uri reiss(brother of Rod reiss) the old guy Kenny the ripper worked with. Lastly it was a 4 year time skip forward.

Adam Vialpando

I'm surprised it took you two so long to catch on that it was a time-skip. Usually you both catch on to stuff better than that. I mean the beginning was obviously confusing but I figured by halfway and everything that was said it would have clicked.

CD

I love how the comments are always swarmed with people asking them to watch more closely, or pay better attention to already known information (myself included). But no one realises THEY DON'T READ THE COMMENTS. If you are frustrated, you are going to continue to be as they are NOT going to read comments, nor get an editor or otherwise trusted person who can actually fact check them (Even though they should be checking themselves so they don't make silly or baseless assumptions.). At this point ladies, you just look like you're trying to just get through the series instead of genuinely enjoying it and retaining information. I'd hope this would change something but it will not. I would add though you may as well end the series if what I said is the case. Would rather not watch people who don't care about the show thanks.

Diegesis

Yet, there are two main characters named Ymir in Attack on Titan so how do I assume without seeing everything yet that their couldnt be two people named Reiner

Camden Marr

i haven’t seen this reaction yet, but up to this point it is very obvious they’re enjoying the show. should they be interacting with the viewers more? yes absolutely they should. but just because they aren’t reading comments doesn’t mean they don’t like the show. yes they’re gonna be confused at some stuff and there’s not much we can do about that which is frustrating, but they will most likely figure it all out eventually. if you don’t enjoy their reactions to this show then just stop watching them. nobody is forcing you to pay for these. to say they may as well stop watching the show just because you’re frustrated that they aren’t interacting with viewers is crazy. these episodes are very confusing at first. just because they aren’t picking up on everything doesn’t mean they aren’t enjoying the show. it’d be great if they would have someone reading comments to help them along the way, but it doesn’t appear that they do. we should all know that by now though, and know that it’s most likely going to be that way going forward. i’ll say again if you’re not interested in watching their reactions while they try to figure it all out on their own that’s fine, but don’t tell them to stop watching entirely just because you’re frustrated that they don’t read comments.

Diegesis

We stopped reading comments because people kept dropping spoilers not because we don’t care. We want our reactions to stay authentic, not shaped by strangers telling us what we ‘should’ think or notice. And honestly? The assumption that we aren’t enjoying the show or paying attention just isn’t true. We’re watching it how we naturally watch, not how commenters want us to watch. Your message comes off pretty hostile, and if you think we should quit the series because we’re not reacting the way you personally want… that’s more of a you problem than an us problem. We’ll keep making the content we enjoy for the people who enjoy it with us! Thanks

Diegesis

Thanks Camden Marr! 🙌🏼 we want to interact more just too many spoilers unfortunately it became too much for our team to moderate on top of our current content lineup

Michael

Don’t forget to watch the post credit scene for episode 4 it’s really important

Camden Marr

i figured that was the reason. the AOT fanbase loves to spoil the show for some reason that i’ll never understand. i’d much rather watch you guys be a bit confused at times and try to figure it out on your own then watch reactors who were spoiled about the entire thing. keep doing what works best for you guys. the reactions have been great so far, and i’m really looking forward to seeing what yall think of the final season. and don’t worry about it being confusing at the start. every reaction channel ive seen has been confused during the start of season 4

Cornelius Ukena

y’all in the comments need to chill. this is what happens when everyone insists people watch AoT as one of their first anime. if you’re gonna throw people into the deep end you gotta be prepared to see some misses. especially on a show that you know reactors can’t read the comments. they’re figuring it out though, just let them watch it. they’re clearly enjoying the show but if you’re not having fun you can go watch paint dry instead.

Hængeklumpen

I mean they literally asked. at the end of the video.

Sevenpsych

Everyone suffers from jet lag when they hit season 4.

Sky Alderson

Everyone has brainfarts sometimes, it was more funny than anything else, sorry if my message was perceived as rude.

Jacob

Ya know what, that is a completely fair argument and i wasn't trying to make fun! Lol i just thought it was silly, regardless i enjoyed the reaction!

Mina E.D

I'm glad y'all are avoiding the spoilers. There were certain people especially in the s2 and s3 reactions who kept hinting at and literally saying when shit was gonna happen. Better to let things unfold without expectations.

Hennnyy

What are these comments?? Am I wrong in assuming that Season 4 was always narratively disorienting at first? I know most people here have consumed the property multiple times but I remember when the season first came out just how many day one viewers had more questions than answers. This is a canon event as far as I’m concerned and this reaction falls in line with every other reaction of AOT season 4.

CD

When you consistently make points that are literally voided by already presented information, that just makes it look like either you don't retain information well (an issue which can be easily rectified by keeping notes to keep track), or care to remember the information. It comes off negatively, and is a frustrating watch - I would imagine for not just me as evidenced by past comments. Just taking that little bit of extra time to flesh out a theory, or to even refer to notes/information before speaking may save extra confusion in an already, at times, confusing story. Some just seem blurted out. The whole "flashback" thought was moot since you are given information literally this first episode informing that there has been a 4 year skip, amongst other things. You also already know that Eren possesses the founding titan AND the attack titan, cancelling the theory of the Founding being in the vial back in the cave. Most of the theories/assumptions and the thoughts behind them have been great to listen to, and the resulting reaction, which is why it is disappointing whenever a thread gets grabbed and taken for a mile despite being proved otherwise by something that has happened or already occurred. To be quite honest it wouldn't be a huge challenge to research and have someone be able to keep them in the loop, without spoilers. Maybe it just wasn't worth it but it is completely possible despite the reputation of AoT being easily spoiled. There is no hostility in any writing of this, it isn't positive, but it isn't hostile either. In fact to be taking the time to be writing these messages, I'd have to have enjoyed what I saw. Only relatively recently these little problems have been sticking out, hence the comment. What I said was fairly correct, if someone does not enjoy something, they shouldn't continue it. Maybe a bit blunt, but if it isn't the case then I'd happily be wrong. Thanks for the response

Kage Uzumaki

im glad it was mentioned Eldians used the titan power to dominate other races for 1700 years, marley finally took them down 80 to 90 yrs before the events of episode 1. I think people overlook the fact that other nations would use the opportunity to take out a weakened nation. Marley probably used the titans to defend themselves. its messed up but a 1000 yrs of hatred from other countries is not gonna go well after the oppressor is wiped. this is my opinion tho but i feel like this is why they are at war no it just became a way for them to be on top

Sky Alderson

That's only the version of the Mahr empire though. "Winners write history", you know. Even if some later elements make it really plausible, nobody really knows

Sky Alderson

People (including me) being a bit frustrated/finding funny that they didn't get some very obvious indications in the dialogs concerning the timeframe, and wondering why they would think Reiner wasn't, in fact, Reiner. As I said in another comment, brainfarts happen to anynone, no big deal. I only saw one person criticizing their reactions as a whole, (which is weird since they really seem to enjoy the show and that it's not a common occurence that they were confused on something that was quite obvious) and several people describing this thread as if it was full of hating trolls viciously attacking Mapple and Arianna. I think everyone just need to chill.

Diegesis

There are two main characters in the show Ymir and Ymir so it’s not impossible that two characters have the same name potentially

Hennnyy

I can see that. Half the fun in the reaction is watching them figure everything out cause they do get there eventually. They’ve mentioned paper and a whiteboard for the past few episodes but maybe some notes would actually help in keeping thoughts and theories (more importantly the Titan identities) in track. I’m having a blast regardless though.

Tanner Hatch

Definitely not wrong in assuming that. The beginning of season four is incredibly overwhelming with the amount of information it's throwing at you. Catching all the exposition alone is difficult enough, but all the world-building, character introductions, character arcs, foreshadowing, and straight-up action mean you have essentially no time to catch everything that is happening, let alone digest it. On top of all that is the fact that the show is not afraid to obfuscate the truth and plays with the storytelling and tone. People getting on their case for reacting how the author very likely intended for the audience to react is pretty silly.

Seizure Augustus

Heck, there are even two characters named Eren, too.

Lemon

Ratioed

Lemon

YES SEASON FOUR THE SEASON WITH THE BEST OPS IN MY OPINION

CD

Oh my, I shall never recover from this violent and scathing comment, whatever shall I do? My critique is valid, simply adding "ratio" with no counter speaks volume to your childlike intellect. Enjoy your crayons champ, atta boy ;)

Joe Blankenship

I love how they just drop you into the Marley world. Reframing how you see everybody you've met so far. Now you start to see where Reiner, Bertholdt, and Annie came from. They were raised as Eldians to fight as titans for Marley.

Camden Marr

whether your critique was valid or not does not matter. you’re allowed to be a bit annoyed when they miss stuff, but you need to remember it’s hard to pick up on everything on the first watch. the problem was the way you wrote it and you saying they should just drop the show. it’s came off very hostile, and you saying they aren’t enjoying the show is just very obviously not true. they said they want to watch the show how the want, not how other people want them to, and they want to avoid all spoilers which sounds perfectly reasonable to me. i personally hate it when people try to guide me through and explain every little thing that’s happening in a show. like i said before if that’s not the type of reaction you’re looking for that’s fine, nobody is forcing you to watch. but it’s been this way for 3 seasons already so don’t expect it to change suddenly. i feel like the girls have done a great job at picking up on stuff thus far, and being confused at this point in the show is nothing unusual. people would be even more mad if they had gotten spoiled, and personally i think it’s great to see reactors watching the show and unpacking it completely on their own with no outside knowledge.

Edward Wittlif

Comment section's wild on this one 😅 The fun part of reactions for me is to see how people who are different from me react to the shows I love. I was a SnK manga reader actively engaged with other fans online, and a longtime fan of anime, so I understood the time skip and its lore implications from the beginning. But it's fun to see how people who are new to anime and not engaging with fandom process the time skip, how they put the pieces together. And the Diegesis reaction series has been doubly fun because they approach the show with so much empathy. They really invest in the characters, and that rules! I guess I can understand people being frustrated when reactors misunderstand a plot beat at first blush, but like I said, I think the fun of reaction channels is to see stories through new eyes, and seeing what clicks immediately versus what takes a few eps? That's part of it, in my opinion.

CD

Literally stating obvious solutions to situations that most people who have a brain can come to the same conclusion of, to make it easier on themselves? Struggling to remember established facts and information? Write it down. Forgetting who people are or where something is? Pay more attention to the dialogue/environment. That way, exposition revealing crucial story information isn't glossed over by pointless theories or thoughts. There's out-there guesses and theories which can be entertaining and provide some intrigue, and then there's just blurted out opinion/idea. Being spoon every single thing and having your hand held is not what I'm getting at. Actually being proactive in a series you enjoy by keeping track of the story at present is the bare minimum someone could do - even more so when that person is struggling or incapable of putting the (already present) pieces together. The first 2 seasons they covered were great with it still being early and not much has been revealed about the wider world, allowing room for some more "wild" ideas, then we moved into 3 where things start to come together about Paradis, Humanity, and beyond the wall - some parts of the story began to make sense, some things started getting misconstrued and not much thought given to them beyond their initial utterance. But, then we arrive at the start of 4, with several proposed ideas that hold no water when you are faced with the fact that they are disproven with literally any amount of backtracking. Time skip and locale change does not affect this. Disregarding this to continue on your soapbox of how this rocks the boat in a negative manner and is hostile is pure projection. Have I devolved into verbal and personal attacks? No. Saying that if they look like they are not truly into the show and are lacking the understanding, to then stop if that is the case, is not hateful nor hostile. Just a cold statement. I would hope in future you are able to pick up on the differences between "If x is the case" and "Do this now". Being confused is normal in the show, but failing numerous times to effectively keep track of the story that has been told up to the present is just pure sloppiness, especially with ample time to rectify or even just go over a summary of the previous episode which would take minutes. Plenty of time to fix errors or make it easier to understand and produce a more cohesive understanding of the story. The main gripe is that despite admitting the series is incredibly confusing and that it is hard to keep track of everything, there is no actual effort to remedy that problem over time - leading to their own confusion, and lack of understanding of what is going on, and viewer frustration. Like I said, just sloppy. Shows lack of initiative. If you guys are happy to be in an echo chamber of only singing praises and no critical comments, that's your cup of tea and your choice, but to act as if there are no shortcomings or critiques is just silly quite frankly, especially this far into a show. Thanks for your response though, I enjoyed reading it - despite your response only really amounting to "If you don't like it leave" and "I didn't like the way you conveyed your message so you are hateful". Take care now, and hey maybe they ought to get you on payroll though, the amount of PR you're doing. There's a Good Boy.

JB

Wow usually pretty quiet in the comments and it seems this one has erupted with people flaming them? I think it's been maybe 5 or 6 weeks straight Arianna has said at least once "this show is so crazy" in the most positive way possible lol. ANYWAY WE MADE IT TO THE BEST INTROS AND OUTROS WITH SEASON 4 AND IM GLAD MAPLE WAS MESMERIZED

John Victor Oak

"Is this Reiner's father?" "whoever ate Ymir is the founding" yo, wtf? I'd get people getting overwhelmed at the last 3 episodes of season 3 but by season 4 all information you need has already been shared on those said episodes. You guys really should not be as confused as you are, actually you shouldn't be confused at all because there is no major mystery left and by this point of the show everything you're yapping about has already been explained last season.

Hennnyy

LMAOOO like cmon let’s show some grace

trysmo324

Great reaction! The confusion into anger is so real haha. This season brings out some of the worst that anime fandom has to offer, but it’s worth it 🙏

Feliciano Diaz

I ABSOLUTELY AGREE they should have been using white boards the entire time. GoT it made sense for the first couple seasons, this episode shows how they need to have objective info written down instead of trying to recall memories of lore that they mess up.

Zakary gray

no spoiler answers: The titans so far shown are: Attack titan (the owl > grisha > erin) Founding titan (The royal family > Grisha > erin) Colossal titan (Bertold > Armin) Armored titan (Reiner) Beast titan (Zeke) Cart titan (girl with crutch in marley) Jaw titan (Galliard) We have not seen, but has been told of the War Hammer titan controlled by the Tybur family. Erin controls the attack AND founding titans but can not use the founding titan's unique powers of manipulating all eldians because he does not have royal blood himself. Also, its pronounced Eldians not Eledians. <3

Rey

You guys are doing just fine season 4 has alot of new info and character's its definitely disorienting especially for a show like this which is always dropping lore info and clues, this is definitely a show i always suggest people watch the dub for for that reason, but youre still picking up everything thats being put down. And yes youve seen 8 of the 9!

Emil Aderskog

Also, it's Eren, not Erin, let's not confuse them any further please.

Lood

It's Eldians, not Eladians.

Diegesis

Well its also Diegesis not Diet Jesus but here we are

Lood

Alright, thought I'd just point it out in case you misread the subs.

PurportedGrey

Not meaning this as a criticism, but its very interesting y'all have watched all of GoT and HotD, and cant tell the double speak Reiner is doing before and currently, dudes traumatized not by losing to Eren and co., but by having to fight internally between his friends he grew to love and the brainwashing he grew up with.

Lucas Barros

Honestly I always knew it's not Diet Jesus but I also always heard it as Diet Jesus and it's way too funny to start saying it correctly now after more than a year.

Ren Lichtfoot

LoL I love watching you all rack your brains over this. Honestly, you picked up on so much more than I did my first watch. Well done.

VOCFM

It is exceedingly obvious at this point that Erin is the founding Titan considering it's been said like 20 times lool, and it was the entire point of Dr Jaegar coming to Eldia and why he killed the family as explicitly spelled out . It's crazy they don't know its Riener lol but hey, it's confusing.

VOCFM

It gets to a point that Reiner is nothing much more then a complete victim of his upbringing who, until now, never considered that maybe they were wrong. This is what he knows and theres not much you can judge him on as anyone in his place is going to do the same thing, but may not have been as sentient as reiner was about it.
