Such a good show

CarlosC

W discussion this show is perfect for this channel

PopeScooby

Great reaction! Love the analysis. Carol should definitely be asking more questions, but to be fair she doesn't know that she could trust any answer they give to be truthful. So far the only thing they have said about their goals is that it is a biological imperative for them to spread the "virus". For me, i think the fact that non of the "Pod People" have the ability to make a choice, pushes the French guys behavior much closer to rape then something consensual. Based on the way they responded it seems like, instead of having sex with them, he could be beating them up and they would still say he hadn't done anything that wasn't welcome, because beating them up made him happy and they want to make him happy. I like that they keep it discussion worthy, but for me it just feels dirty.

To me, the lack of asking important questions, and the lack of change are 2 giant loopholes in the plot. Its an awesome concept, but one that is probs too big for cinema. Its not like its the internet where people can choose to engage or not. Having the knowledge of everybody on the planet would bring systematic change at such an unprecedented level i dont think we are even capable of imagining what would happen. This show feels like they took the complication of tech and morality level of Severance and put it in a plot on the level of The Good Place

Pyt

They can't hurt living beings but were ok with killing nearly a billion (1,000,000,000) people to achieve world domination. That math ain't mathing. It also feels very weird that each individual body seemingly cant refuse sex. Unless I missed the point of that conversation but that's what I got out of it.

Athasin

Man I can't wait to hear your guys' theories the further we get into this.

Alex Aguilera

I love how excited Arianna is about this show and can't wait to hear more of her analysis on the rest of the season.

Smapdi

This is morbid, but I'm calling it right now: the hive mind processes and consumes dead people as a major source of their sustenance. It's all about efficiency, and it wouldn't even be taboo, in an organism where each individual is a part of a greater whole. Zosia saying "we'd prefer to be vegetarians" instantly set off an alarm bell in my head. That was a big deflection.

Rheannon

This is one of those shows I just want to binge multiple episodes with y'all because its so intriguing. I think the problem with the the french guy's use of the "joined" women, is that he is using them. Zosia said that none of the joined can make choices that would hurt the non-joined, because it is not in their nature to harm. This means that they CANT say no to his advances. If someone says "yes" because they can't say no, that is not real consent. So yes, it's pretty awful, no matter if he asks politely or not, they cannot truly consent. I think that's why Carol is so upset with him.

Joe Blankenship

Pirate lady said when the military discovered them, they were forced to dump the virus on everyone and kill nearly 900 million people. That doesn't sound like "your lives are your own" and "we can't hurt anyone." I can understand Carol's anger. They HAVE enslaved the human race. Because we don't know what is driving these hive mind people. And if someone could leave the hive, would they want to go back in or stay as themselves?

TinCan Cosmanaut

I heard I reactor say a funny comment to this (blindwave) "Not only aren't they saying yes to sex, they are ALL giving consent to sex which is the most consent anyone has ever received" Great show so much to talk about!

Rafael Pabon

I'm in Carol camp 100%. I might not be as cynical, but this makes you lose everything that makes us human, individuals. there's no more art, no more enjoyment, it's just a bunch of droids. Also, there's no consent when they would always say yes. It's like saying a groomed teenager would give consent

Doc Savage

I'm sorry but Carol is irritating as hell, I hope the hive mind wins. The thing is, whether it's the end of the world or any other day before the end of the world; she is a negative wet blanket no matter what the situation is. My prediction is she decides to kill everyone with her hostility.. bet.

Imagine you came back from a grueling book tour interacting with fans of a book you wrote that you don't actually like and you finally get to relax with your wife at a bar before going home. But UH OH there is a virus that has infected almost everyone in the world and in the process your wife DIES in front of you even though you tried your darndest to save her. You wake up from a hangover, the hive mind sent someone resembling the hot love interest you created for your book to help bury your wife. I would be a liiiittle irritated as well, not to mention grieving.

Pyt

Not only that but Carol nailed it when she started asking the kid about gynecological questions. He is no longer his own person, there is no individual, just this husk that is being controlled. He isn't there because he wants to be he is there because he is being told he has to be there and can't say no. The thing is that humans are social creatures and we can help and be apart of communities and still are able to maintain our own independence and be our own person.

Pyt

But they can't say no, or even really make their own choices. If we all lived in the same city and you didnt want to have sex with someone but everyone else wanted you to, is that you consenting?

TinCan Cosmanaut

That’s assuming id want something else than everyone else in the city. (In this scenario)

Mark Lecuyer

totally understand that opinion - just keep in mind that her wife died 2 days ago. So her world was destroyed and The World essentially died. Not excusing it - just wanting to remember that to understand her decisions.

Mark Lecuyer

*I thought this was an interesting idea that someone suggested: that the clock counting down or up is from the moment when Helen died rather than when the world was assimilated. *This is something I did during my first watch as I discussed the show with friends: just keep in mind that Carol's wife died 2 days ago(per the end of ep 2). So she isn't at the top of her game; which is why she is letting things slip by (ie: not asking question after question after question) *I thought this was an interesting character note/choice: we know Carol like a drink or two(or many) so when she sits with the other English speakers on the plane - she doesn't have any champagne. (she is focused) but once she loses them - at lunch, she is back to normal.

Joe Stüll

The “husk being controlled” model is one way to think of it. But maybe it’s more like a bottom up decision making process where the individual inclinations are aggregated into the resulting decision. Like a kind of biological democracy. I’m hoping the mechanism is some kind outside the box concept, but who knows.

Joe Stüll

Maybe they should have named her Karen.

Hugh Mungus

2 episodes in and Pluribus is causing this level of discord simply for existing. GG, best show ever.

Owen

With no regard for dignity or decorum, I cry, ALTERED CARBON SEASON ONE, please. I won't bother you with multiple asks, just had to speak my piece.

Heilige Taube

I Think maple was into something when mentioned "Capitalism": cause nowadays its a really strong force on our individualism and loss of sense of community, and this shows tries to grasp that in very subtle way cause, as i stated before, we are currently so pre formatted to think of individualism as something we create out of nothing and out of a "Bootstrap" mentality we ignore we all evolved as a group by contributing with each others contribution as individuals.

Name

Maple "I feel like it has something to do with capitalism" ....... absolutely top tier "WTF ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT" moment.
