Hey guys 🤍

We’ve seen the comments about the sync being slightly off in the most recent watch alongs, and we want to clarify what’s happening.

We are currently outside of the U.S. for an extended period of time. We weren’t planning to make a big announcement about that for privacy reasons, but it seems relevant now.

After looking into it, it appears that some streaming platforms (HBO in particular) slightly adjust playback speed outside of the U.S. We do not change any playback settings when recording, and we are not using VPNs to alter platform behavior. The speed difference is not intentional and wasn’t something we were aware of until now.

A few viewers who follow European-based creators mentioned they’ve experienced this before. One workaround that has helped some people is using a browser extension called “YouTube Custom Speed” and setting playback to 0.959 speed, which should realign the sync.

Unfortunately, this isn’t something we can manually correct on our end inside the streaming apps.Again because we are currently recording outside of the U.S., some platforms — especially HBO/Max — may play episodes very slightly faster in certain regions. We do not change playback speed, adjust settings, or alter anything inside the streaming apps.

Here’s what we know so far:

HBO / MaxMost likely to have slight sync differences outside the U.S.

NetflixNo known playback speed issues.

Amazon Prime VideoNo known playback speed issues.

Apple TV+No known playback speed issues.

CrunchyrollUnlikely, but possible depending on the title.

HuluPrimarily U.S.-based, so playback may vary outside the U.S.

We appreciate you guys flagging it and being patient while we figure this out 🤍 We promise it’s not intentional, and we’re doing our best to keep everything running smoothly while we’re on the road.

Thank you for sticking with us.

SabotheHunter

Have a good trip and take care guy!

CarlosC

since were talking videos when are you guys gonna stop doing these "bring your own copy" watchalongs? thenormies, yaboyroshi, cinebinge and lettsreact stopped doing it years/months ago and you guys are the only patreon i subscribe to that still does it

Chris Bruneau

now it makes sense! I was wondering how the Diegesis version of sopranos kept speeding up! thanks for clarifying guys!

Diegesis

We will continue doing “bring your own copy” watchalongs. The why these other creators are doing it is against federal law and we will not be doing that.

I'm in sweden and I've actually had this issue with reactions on HBO for years, but it really depends on the show. In my experience it's mainly the intro, pre stuff that is timed differently tho. Never had the issue on other streaming platforms tho, on older shows it's more apparent. No issue with white lotus whatsoever so I think it's shows that originally aired on TV like sopranos. Also in eu we do have Hulu shows but they are on Disney+

cereal

hope your having fun wherever you are! hope its a vacay

CarlosC

fair enough 👍

Sloane Lysbeth

i wonder if things like sopranos are the pal versions outside of the us instead of ntsc. can't see why that would matter in the modern age but maybe that's why the speed variation.

Owen

In addition to being illegal i find it is really annoying because you have to watch it with the reaction covering part of the movie/show, and you can't adjust the audio balance. I am in favor of the bring your own copy format 🙌

Diegesis

something to do with the fps for network tv lol Sopranos was aired on TV so I guess the copies are still how it would have been on TV per region despite it being for streaming now

Sloane Lysbeth

just googled and it does say that in the uk, which is where i am, hbo will convert stuff to 25fps instead of the native 24fps in the usa. that is a google ai result tho.

Marcus Cato

I like to think they got hungry seeing all the great food on the Sopranos and decided to take food trip. It might be helpful if you let us know which browser that workaround is good for. If anyone is on Chrome, Opera, or any other browser based on Chrome, there is a workaround available through the dev console. I haven't needed it in a long time but I can track it down if anyone still needs it.

Marcus Cato

I've seen other reactors using that format, and they are definitely pushing the envelope from a legal perspective. It may be fine but there is likely some nonzero risk.

HelloDarion

Completely understandable & thanks for the communication y'all - enjoy your time overseas!

Joe Blankenship

Yall are coming back, right? Don't leave us here in this shitstorm.

Mangeske

Come to Sweden. A lot less drama over here

Kevin Landon

I think its great for a channel to have both, my preference changes by the content. And i also believe with what ive researched about copyright law, that they could do both, and if someday the owners of the content/some company they hire claims copyright infrigement, they would simply have to take down the completely unedited version without further penalty. But then again, Im not a lawyer, nor a scholar, and i have no skin in the game, so its easy for me to say, just do it, everybody else is

Kevin Landon

Theyre not gonna convict anybody on the list, you guys can come back

Owen

Its not pushing the envelope lol its very much just redistributing copyrighted material without permission, that's explicitly what the FBI warning at the beginning of movies is about lol that's up to 5 years in prison and a $250,000 fine

Diegesis

That’s a world wide issue even if this is or isn’t the case

Diegesis

I’m sure it’s lovely over there!!

Marcus Cato

Yes, legally it is not a gray area. The uncertainty lies in what they will bother to go after and what they won't. You are right to point that out.

Joe Blankenship

I imagine somebody will eventually get hit with a fine or something and they’ll all have to come down. It’s super convenient, but it’s literally distributing copy written material and charging for it.

Athasin

Lol, not HBO outing you guys. Also props to you two working while traveling!

ZitherManifesto

Hope you're all enjoying your trip, and thanks for the sync info.

SavyJones

Over in Italy, making connections for your business interests? Be careful. Don Vittorio is a serious man.

Quzga

Other than the lack of sun and cold winter, it's pretty chill

Daymee

What's strange to me is that I stayed in sync with the Knights of the Seven Kingdom episodes just fine. For The Sopranos, I have had to do some pausing and un-pausing to stay lined up. And they're both HBO, so I figure older shows the speed is slightly off for whatever reason, and newer shows, they fixed whatever the problem is. Anyway, it's a minor inconvenience, certainly not something I'd unsubscribe for, especially when it's not your fault.

Aroha

I don't know if it's cause I'm from nz but the playback speed that worked for me was 1.042. So if any other people are having trouble try this.

DropZeBait

Europe traditionally uses PAL: 25 fps US traditionally uses NTSC: 23.976 FPS. So European viewers will need to use 1.042, this makes up the difference in FPS, and you'll stay synced.

Dan Sopranos

For anybody still wondering about the sync I put my copy at +1.042650 and it works
