Shane IS autistic AND he’s just a dude. Those aren’t mutually exclusive lol From your brief discussion on it, it seems like you think Shane being autistic is just a fan interpretation, when it’s a fact of his character. Show creator Jacob Tierney deliberately wrote Shane as neurodivergent. Hudson Williams, Shane’s actor, read the script, recognized Shane was on the spectrum and based his performance off traits and habits he saw from his own autistic father. Shane is definitely an example of low support needs autism and part of what the show wanted to do with his character is depict a more subtle and less extreme portrayal of autism. Right after you brought up Shane being autistic, you saw the scene where Shane approaches Ilya in Russia and clearly misses the social cues given by Ilya saying he wasn’t okay and don’t want to talk. It’s little things like that, Shane’s struggle with eye contact, the flat affect on his voice, the way he processes his emotions, his attachment to routines, etc that inform us of his character. The show doesn’t have to look the audience in the eye and say “This is an autistic man” for it to be true.

I wanna say in an older interview Jacob Tierney and Rachel Reid (Author) have also said or alluded to the fact that Shane is undiagnosed but does have it on the low side of the spectrum, so it's not something that the characters will ever mention as well.

Yes! And, character-wise, Shane doesn’t really seem the type to seek diagnosis so I don’t see that happening either.

I actually think Shane's autism ( or at least the fact that he's on the spectrum )is one of the best written i've seen for a while

Y'all pointing out how it's hard to watch because "we've all been Shane" actually got me thinking again on how this show does such a good job. Like this show is about such a specific thing, queer men in sports, but the story is so human and universally relatable! It pulls at the heartstrings because it feels real
