if you think about it targaryens are colonizers to the people of the seven kingdoms because they just showed up one day with 3 dragons and dominated them all except for dorne. we also saw it in a knight of the seven kingdoms where the fossoway guy told Dunk they're nothing but incestuous aliens etc

Athasin

Yeah that's what Ormund was implying. Aegon the first is literally called Aegon the Conqueror because he came and conquered Westeros.

Hi, Team Black here, but I just wanted to say that (unfortunately) Ormund is right. Remember it's called the 7 Kingdoms of Westeros because they used to be 7 independent kingdoms. Then Aegon the first (aka Aegon the Conqueror) came to Westeros with his two sister wives and used their 3 dragons to subjugate the 7 Kingdoms of Westeros. He made himself the one true King and the 7 Kings were demoted to Lords of Houses. So from Ormund's perspective foreigners with flying nukes came to his people's land (i.e. the land of the first men) and took their land and power. In his mind the only way they were able to do that is with the flying nukes (he has a point). And now that he's essentially raised a kid who is part enemy but part Hightower, he can finally reclaim the power his ancestors were stripped of. AND he can even go further that his ancestors, because remember, the OG 7 kingdoms were constantly fighting each other. It's why Aegon the Conqueror came, he was living in Dragonstone with his sisterwives and got annoyed of the 7 Kingdoms constant fighting, so he landed in Westeros (the place now called King's Landing), subjugated them all, and then merged them into 1 kingdom under his and his sisters rule. So by using Daeron, Ormund/the Hightowers can finally win that perpetual battle between the 7 kingdoms that his ancestors never could. But yeah it is messed up that this guy raised this kid to hate a part of himself.

Also, the actor who plays Ormund is such a good actor. I've only ever seen him in this mini-series called King & Conqueror (which ironically also stars the actor who played Jaime in GoT) but recently I've seen clips of him in interviews and he's a completely different person from either character. "That's something your father would say." The venom in his voice when he said that gave me chills. Also makes you wonder how many servant boys Daeron's seen him kill that he knew to tell that boy to leave all because Ormund got quiet.

Hmm guys it's okay to be on Rhaenyra's side, I am too, broadly, like she's still mostly trying to do good. But y'all need to kind of start holding her accountable for her mistakes ^^' it's not just everyone around her doing things wrong. LIke with the gold cloaks, "that's not what she wanted", well then she should have been clearer, or tasked someone else to handle it. She said to the famously brutal and violent police force "just make it cease", what did she think was going to happen? That they were going to conduct a thorough investigation? They're not detectives. Also, she should probably just have let it go to begin with. The best way to get them to stop is just to prove them wrong, not punish those who are already frustrated with her. And with Ulf, I gotta be honest, I'm on Ulf's side here. Wanting to have an ale with your mates every now and then is not a big ask for what he provides for her. He's right, what good is a knighthood to a dragon rider? Rhaenyra is not doing enough to keep her dragonriders loyal and happy. It seems like she's forgetting that they're not simple knights who depend on their overlords and can be ordered around. They're fucking dragon riders. She needs to treat them better. Other than that, Ormund is crazy and I love him.

Christophe, we appreciate that you’ve been part of this community for so long, that you engage so deeply with the show and books, and that you’ve been a great resource for many things—so this is not meant disrespectfully. But I do want to gently say that when nearly every episode becomes “you guys need to…” or a correction of how we’re interpreting Rhaenyra, it starts to feel less like a conversation and more like our reactions are being graded against a very specific interpretation of the politics and accountability within a fictional fantasy series. We understand that she is flawed and makes mistakes. The show is a fantasy drama and we’ve even gone as far as calling it “medieval reality TV” because everyone is messy and that is part of what makes it entertaining. We may not assign the exact same amount of blame that you do, or stop to hold an accountability hearing for everyone after every scene, because we’re watching in real time, enjoying ourselves, and experiencing the story in the way that feels natural and fun for us. And all the characters are a mess anyway! Our perspective also isn’t especially unusual compared with the broader conversations happening online. We simply haven’t taken dedicated time to have a full-length analytical discussion yet because, for now, we’re taking the story episode by episode as the season continues and the story is still unfolding for us. These are immediate reactions, not carefully prepared essays that account for every possible reading of each scene. You’re always welcome to share your interpretation as is everyone in the community, and it is important we discuss the story from different angles, but please leave room for our initial reactions without framing it as something we continually need to correct. We’re enjoying the series, this is how we naturally engage with it, and it really doesn’t need to become the same accountability debate beneath every episode especially after we already discussed it under the last one 🖤 thank you!

getting a little ahead too at least seeing Ser Gwayne and Prince Daeron Targaryen have a side conversation kind of showing he (Prince Daeron) is aware that Ormund is insane and he knows he's like a puppet to him so it is intersting to see he may not totally subscribe to hating that side of himself (yet), this also does make us question what Ser Gwayne is really on about tho and what Ormund means to him given this history is still close to him too... it will be very interesting lol

Christophe

Fair enough ;-) I guess we all get kind of heated at times with this show which is clearly a mark in its favor. I'll try and stop expecting your reactions and interpretations to match mine which is obviously not a fair standard.

ATrustySpade

let my man's go to the pub (I would die for Ulf)

ATrustySpade

and no, Ulf would NOT die for me. I don't care.

MabelandMargaret

If you really think about it, the first men were colonizers themselves because the land belonged to the giants, children of the forest etc.

MabelandMargaret

Because I JUST found out today and have to tell y'all: the actor that plays Daeron is the same kid that played Miles in Bly manor!! I can't believe I didn't even recognize him.

Jacob Livingston

Y’all’s reactions are the best. The dynamic you two have with each other is top tier! I’m patiently trying to wait for yall to finish dark so I can just binge it all with you guys. I always know it’s going to be so good 😭😭😭

Jacob Livingston

I 100% agree with yall. People are actually too quick to point out rhaenyras wrong doings like she is the worst among them. Allicent Otto aegon aemond have all done so much worst. Rhaenyra has lost 2 sons in a 2-3 month time span fighting a war they started. She was the rightful heir and everybody declared for her years ago. She has had many mistakes but this isn’t a war she started. Even after lucerys was killed by aemond she still went to Allicent in kings landing to try and sue for peace. Before all this started she offered to marry helaena to Jace to combine their families and strengthen all of them. Allicent denied it, misinterpreted what viserys told her and then Otto put everything in motion. The amount of people Rhaenyra has lost and the amount of obstacles she has had to deal with is far greater than anyone else. Yet she has is STILL trying to win this war without burning everybody to the ground. She was STILL willing to spare Daeron. She has STILL treated Allicent and helaena well. Now she has made a ton of mistakes and done some things but it is no where near the same as to what she has endured and inherited since this started and she took kings landing.
