I went to a vegan food festival with an ex and there was a singer who, with all sincerity, sang the lyrics "Preserve her with fervor" with regard to the earth and i wanted to laugh so hard.

not even lying, before I went to bed I swear I wished for this reaction lol I was watching a movie reaction and I just thought this would be a great time lol awesome to see.

Obligatory comment: The "program from the 80s" was a show in the 80s called 21 Jump Street starring Johnny Depp so it was kinda mind blowing when he made his appearance and his end.

Athasin

Also one the blonde girl who goes undercover is Dakota Johnson with her natural blonde hair. Dakota Johnson being Anastasia in 50 Shades of Grey.

Huge yes to both of these. Would also love to see Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story.

To expand a tiny bit on what others have said: "21 Jump Street" started life as a television show in the 1980s with the same premise: young-looking officers go undercover in high schools. The show was played straight, and it is very famous for being one of the earliest performances by Johnny Depp. Before they made this movie, there were attempts to make a straight movie adaptation, but then Jonah Hill came onto produce and co-write, and they turned it into a comedy. When they are in Nick Offerman's office at the beginning of the film, his comments about how "they're reviving a canceled undercover police program from the '80s, because the people in charge have no new ideas," it's the movie making fun of itself. Other references to the show include the woman who gives Jenko and Schmidt their car is Holly Robinson Peete, reprising her role as Hoffs from the original series, and then when Depp and his partner, played by Peter DeLuise, show up, they are also playing their characters from the original show (which is also what is playing on the TV during that entire scene). Depp's character's first line in the movie? "If these boys is cops, I'm D.E.A.!" This was the first live-action movie directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the directors of Project Hail Mary and producers of the Spider-Verse movies. They started in animation, making the cult MTV TV cartoon "Clone High" and then the feature Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs (2009) before making this. Not sure if you noticed that the montage in the middle where Schmidt is successfully "moving" the drugs and Jenko is getting closer to the nerdy kids was set to Ice Cube's own track "Straight Outta Compton." Another great very subtle visual gag that most people miss is during the chase scene, in the build up to the second non-explosion. On the side of the tanker, it says something like "OIL & FUEL." As the movie does its fake-out build up, the camera cuts to it: OIL...FUEL...AND...? I'm glad you watched the little montage at the end. It's well-edited and funny and the Korean Jesus bit is cute. Too many reactors turn the film off the moment it goes to credits. Fun fact: a friend of mine gave me .pdfs of two versions of the script from before the final version of the movie was made. The first one was one of the straight adaptations of the show, by the writers Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec, the writers of Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol. The other one was an earlier draft by Hill and co-writer Michael Bacall. I was kind of surprised by how unfunny it was to me compared to the finished film. The only thing that survived from that first draft into this one was the drugs tasting like Doritos.

They should do all three of what are loosely considered the Lonely Island movies: Hot Rod (2007), MacGruber (2010), and Popstar. Palm Springs (2020) would also be a fun one. Also, just to circle back to the OP, I have to say, I think Barb and Star ranks as my #1 worst COVID-related box office tragedy. I feel like so many people didn't see it, and it's just so funny. Bridesmaids is good, but I like Barb and Star significantly better.

Frankly, I sort of feel like Dakota Johnson would just be known for being Dakota Johnson more than any of her movies, even though that's ostensibly why she's famous.

It's wild how forgotten it seems to be! Barely any reactions for it, too. Covid really buried that movie. Hell, I only just remembered it existed like 6 months ago despite loving it at the time. I really think Maple and Arianna would like it. They seem to enjoy the sillier comedy films.

Tyler Foster

FYI, I requested it on two channels. I don't think the first one of them published it anywhere, but if you watch Jyn x Ryl or are interested regardless, you can buy it on their Patreon for $5.

From the directors of Project Hail Mary

Well since no one else has mentioned it here yet, the sequel 22 Jump Street is easily as good, IMO better than the first.

SixDickSally

Lol, didn't Arianna major in like criminal justice? You absolutely DO NOT have to Mirandize someone when you arrest them unless you intend on interrogating them. And you only have to Mirandize them before you interrogate them, not at the time of arrest.

Just wanna say how much I’ve been loving these full length watch-alongs with all these comedies from my high school/college years. It’s been quite a comfort in the wake of my cat and sole roommate of the past 7 years passing a couple months ago. Much love to Maple, Arianna, and Chad.

pete frise

Oh yeah the guy from war of the worlds (or like - Ice Cube)

Adam Vialpando

Tbf, calling 21 Jump Street a purely straight show would be a bit misleading for a modern audience. The show abounds with humor, it just isn't a pure comedy like the movie. It would be straight for the time, but the premise is inherently ridiculous.
