I think you are right the going merry should be a girl, the subtitles I watched referred to her as a she but I'm not an expert on the matter

Finally, they explained the skypiea scene, I like it, I think it's more to hammer in that Merry is a nakama and give more validation to Usopp's side with the manifestation of its spirit and the "Klabautermann" thing

Ho boy; the whole "calling Going Merry a 'he'" thing is... complicated. But at this point giving long, intricate explanations of things are kinda my specialty XD One of the oddities about the Japanese language is that while in English you would simply say "I am this" or "I will do that" to refer to yourself when talking, in Japan there are (and I'm not joking here) no less then *17* recognized ways to say "I", and what determines which version you use is supposed to be a combination of your age, gender, and how professional the situation is, with at least 8 of them being commonly used. In the manga, the spirit of Merry uses the "boku" version of "I". And in Japan, this version is usually (as in like, 80-ish percent of the time) the version used by young boys when they have to be friendly, but also respectful. So literally just that choice of wording, it can actually be argued that the spirit, and by extension the ship itself, is male. (That said, 'boku' can also be used by females if they're particularly aggressive, so there's also an argument the other way too. At the end of the day; it's a ship; refer to is however you want lol)

I feel like the Going Merry was just as much Usopp's as it was Luffy's. I say this because Usopp was an OG member. I mean, look at everything he's done with the ship and the crew. The man literally created the Jolly Roger. But he was devastated whenever he heard that Luffy was willing to let it go after he (Usopp) was the one who put the most work into the crew.

Recall that inanimate objects can "eat" devil fruits. Like the gun from alabasta that was a dog zoan. Not that I'm saying the ship had a devil fruit. But spirits/ghosts really do exist in this world; the ship's spirit being one example; you'll get more instances of ghosts/spirits. I think its fair to say that all the straw hats considered Merry a friend, and the ship considered them friends. Thats why it was so hard for Usopp to abandon the ship, he was the only one that had actually seen the spirit of the ship with his eyes. I wouldn't say the ship was like his version of Luffys straw hat. The ship was just another nakama which Usopp cared for. I think his fight with Luffy was not completely over Usopp's uselessness, but mostly just the treatment of the ship in how they would say goodbye. Maybe if Luffy offered a funeral for the ship Usopp would have been more chill about it lol.
