Usop should learn how to be a real man from Senor I guess

Of course Usopp was going to do something! He's one of the main characters, he's the only one left on the battlefield, and he's already had several decisive actions throughout the manga. There wasn't even any doubt! The moment Luffy says we have to trust him is a clear indication of that (it was Oda telling us, "I know what I'm doing"). Lucky, you're lying when you say Usopp has never done anything xD He's the weakest, and yet probably one of the crew members who has defeated the most fish-men and Devil Fruit users! My problem with the situation is that Oda felt it necessary to make Usopp think for an eternity before engaging in combat. It makes no sense. We know he's capable of something! So let him do it! We don't give a damn about him running around for 10 minutes since we know he'll be back! Captain Usopp, Sogeking, or whatever, it doesn't matter! Just let him fight directly! This was all about making him look like a complete jerk before his predictable return to buy time! And I know what some of you are going to say! That it's character development. Because Oda wanted Usopp to fight for STRANGERS (not his crew) while showing honesty and bravery! No lies or aliases. He fights with conviction AS Usopp! And it's the first time he's done it. Okay, I get it! But there was no need for this fake "son of a bitch" moment to make him do that! Beyond being lazy writing, it's bad writing! I love Oda's work, but let's be honest. Besides, it frustrates me because I love Usopp. I find the "magnificent loser/decisive passer/comic relief" premise interesting in a crew like his if you develop the character to make it work. But I don't know, there's something Oda missed with this character.

For no reason at all! Usopp has faced fish-men, Baroque Works, Ener, Luffy, CP9, Perona, zombies, an admiral, giant carnivorous flowers that he wrecked for two years, and even a dragon! Not to mention his special relationship with giants! But teaming up with Robin and 50 Tonttatas to defeat Trebol and Sugar is too much for him?? I repeat, what was Oda smoking to think it was coherent to write Usopp like that? I'm not saying Usopp should have just shown up and knocked them both out effortlessly, because that wouldn't have been realistic either! Trebol is the fourth strongest member of Doflamingo's crew. But a strategy like the one against Perona right from the start would have been great! Something funny, you know? Because it's part of his character. BUT FROM THE START!

AccordingToLucky

I agree! What pisses me off the most is that i actually thoght we got some character development only for Oda to set him back 4 arcs back with this shit

Nicholas Kent

Oh my god, we're talking about a guy who was headshotting marines from the top of the Tower of Justice 500 meters away in Enies Lobby! We're talking about a guy who were teaming up with his crewmates to defeat the walking dead body of freaking ancient giant Oz! But creating a trap with Robin and half of the Tonttatas for Trebol and throwing a Tabasco ball into Sugar's mouth from 20 meters away with the help of the rest of the Tonttatas is too complicated? No no no no NO! I'm still annoyed years after seeing that! BUT things got better for him in this arc after that episode, thank god.

Maks Lesniewski

I wish to have half the faith in ANYTHING as you have in Usopp, Nicholas, because to me it wasn't obvious he was gonna do something. I mean, I knew he probably was, but that's ONLY because I knew about Usopp's meme status at the end of Dressrosa even before starting One Piece. Keep in mind, this is speaking from the position of someone who actually LIKES Usopp, that's how bad his character arc was.

Nicholas Kent

You're talking about him like he's a real person xD I'm talking about him as a character created by a mangaka, Eiichiro Oda. Of course, Oda was going to bring him back. Basic logic. Usopp is one of the protagonists of the story. If he had fled the battlefield and stood his ground, it would have made him a villain. So obviously that's not what Oda intended. It was simply a matter of stretching out the chapter in question (chapter 741, I just checked) and offering a character development that, in my opinion, was extremely poorly executed. PS: That being said, the scene seems much shorter in the manga. Whereas it drags on forever in the anime. But whatever it's still there

Maks Lesniewski

No, I'm aware it's a character, and that it would be a dumb writing decision, and maybe I'm a fool, but I don't expect Oda to never fumble his writing decisions.

Bogdan Petrovic

The fact that usopp wouldnt have turned back if he didn't hear them screaming and crying for 5 minutes is crazy ngl.

Nicholas Kent

Oh, Oda definitely makes writing mistakes sometimes! The way he handled Usopp during the operation SOP is one of them imo! But Oda would never make Usopp a bad guy or someone who would ultimately betray Luffy's principles. Let's not exaggerate lol It was just bad writing due to too much weed that day.

Anyone else notice the audio is kinda periodically cutting out from the anime audio?

AccordingToLucky

I was waiting for this chapter, I finally got round to watching it. First of all, don't get me wrong, Usopp is undeniably a bitch But also consider, a perspective a read a long time ago, how you are as a person is shaped by your experiences and memories. Usopp becoming less or more brave is affected by the things he has done, and sometimes those experiences are connected to one person. Usopp does not remember Robin AT ALL at this point, and the only reason they went to Enies Lobby was because of Robin, CP 9 were only there for Robin and the Pluton Blueprints, and more importantly Usopp only created Sogeking to disguise himself as he chose to stay and rescue Robin. Sogeking was a way for Usopp to put up a brave front and hide his fear, and we saw both in Enies Lobby and against Perona how it allowed him to be braver than he felt, and this likely led to making him braver over the timeskip. If he doesn't remember Robin AT ALL, then we don't know what other facts he doesn't remember, does he remember creating Sogeking for NO REASON? Does he remember having to be brave in Enies Lobby to rescue no one? Or does he simply remember falling out with the crew then getting back together and that's it? It's possible that in this moment he was a lot more cowardly than he would normally have been precisely because he doesn't remember Robin at all and other associated memories. Also, since he doesn't remember Robin or MOST of the Tontattas who are now toys, he literally has no one there that he cares about, just a very small group of people he only just met and lied to to avoid getting hurt and is now involved in their plan, and he's only there because Franky wanted to help and Franky isn't even here, he's literally leaving no one personally important behind from his perspective.

AccordingToLucky

True! But he is still leaving people who counted on him behind. He still remembers Franky and Luffy and how down for the cause they were. He is still making a choice. Bro did not deserve all that praise in the end lol But i see your point!

Krowft

A lot of conflation happens in one piece amongst viewers very often because of how the strawhats are portrayed. Luffy himself says he does not want to be a hero, he may incidentally be one but from a personal perspective he's extremely selfish a self-motivated, he would do anything for his friends, but that's only because he wants to. He's not a bad person, of course, but remember that when he was looking for Camie the mermaid in the archipelago he went to a slave shop to see if she was there and left without saving a single slave, he easily could have. So Luffy does not care at all what kind of person you are on his crew as long as he likes you. Take Mr2, we love Mr2, but remember he once disguised himself as Vivi's father to frame him for serious crimes, knowing full well that the country was destroying itself, so it's not like he's an overall good person, and Luffy knew this but he still accepted him as a friend. As for Noland, WE know that he is a good person, but that's not actually what the world thinks, Noland died as the legendary LIAR, the world remembers his as a bad guy and wrote picture books about that as a cautionary tale, it's very very few people who think differently, so Usopp is not really doing much to "damage" his name. Also, remember they are here primarily for Law's plan, to destroy the factory, that's it, it's FRANKY who decided he wanted to do something different, and now Luffy for separate reasons, Usopp only lied to avoid being attacked by the tontatta's, which is fair, but he didn't tell Luffy that he wanted to change plans and help the little people, so we can't blame Usopp for everything. This isn't to defend his character btw, he definitely is a bitch and POS, and it may be the he wasn't truly ready for the new-world, but I just want to put things a little bit more into perspective.

Krowft

I mean, what you say, Lucky, is completely true, and it was clearly intended to give a negative emotional response, probably to contrast with when he changes his mind and faces up against 2 completely stronger characters by himself. But it was probably done a bit strong so I completely understand that people would walk away from the whole experience feeling worse about it lol

Krowft

No, I think Usopp was right to tell the truth, not only is it, you know, the actual truth, but these Tontatta HAVE to learn the lesson that they cannot trust and believe everything. For CENTURIES they have been used MAINLY because they were just too trusting, and they will never break out of that cycle unless they learn. And if learning the hard way by Usopp breaking their hearts is what it takes then that's what it takes. Usopp came to help in the end, but he almost didn't, and in the future they might not have an ally around, they HAVE to learn to be discerning. And when they will even believe people when they are being whipped, it would probably have needed something drastic like a massive betrayal for them to learn that they need to change, so I don't think Usopp was wrong to tell the truth. Also, we just saw Leo call Trebol a liar to his face when he was talking about Usopp instead of believing him like the other Tontattas, so he is proof that the Tontatta CAN learn to be discerning (though ironically here Trebol wasn't really lying lol)

Nicholas Kent

Yeah, it was completely unnecessary, inconsistent, and frustrating. That said, we know Usopp is capable of amazing things, and he's a comic relief character, so it's fine. The biggest problem some fans have with Usopp is that they expect him to become Zoro. And very quickly, too! You see some people criticizing Usopp in Arlong Park because he runs away when Chew tries to kill him. That's ridiculous. Usopp is a comedic sniper, a storyteller with a big heart, and a cosplayer xD. He grows and has real adventures, but he was presented that way, and he'll end up that way lol
