The 1994 Fantastic Four cartoon was fucking weird. Created by perverts for nobody, it is remembered chiefly for the absence of Magneto's magnet-powered hovercar from the 1978 series.

Fantastic Four: The Animated Series never got a tie-in SNES game or even a lousy CD-i lightgun movie ala Thunder in Paradise. What it did get was a Choose Your Own Adventure-style novelization.

A copy of this book was thrust into my hands by a withered old woman outside a Circle K last weekend. She told me to write about it for my 1-800 HOT DOG column, and I said that it's actually 1-900, we're a pay number like Hulk Hogan's Hotline and Dionne Warwick's Psychic Friends. But she was already gone. As I stood there, faded book and Takis in hand, a voice on the wind cackled like the opening of a Dark Souls game for a full twenty minutes.

I've already accumulated like six different curses from various amulets and tombs, so I don't want to risk another. Here, then, is a readthrough of Fantastic Four: The Animated Series: The Interactive Adventure Book.

Talking Alpaca

Mumbling incoherently is basically my love language, so I love this CYOA book.

I always find something really stupid to draw my attention, but why are Johnny's shoulders as wide as Ben's? Did the animators have one template for all superhero males

Swift Justice

Absolutely yes, and they kept using it throughout the 90s even in the GOOD superhero cartoons. Spider-Man is about the only relatively consistent exception.

If you haven’t already heard the song this article references, do yourself a favor and look it up on YouTube. It is so much worse than you could possibly imagine. Whoever recorded this almost certainly did so at gunpoint

Matthew Harris

Okay I have to admit something: I am not quite sure whether The Thing is superhumanly large, or just the size of a muscular man. Sometimes he is punching the Hulk as an equal, sometimes he is a getting into a taxi in an overcoat, and as a 47 year old man in the cheapest motel in Vancouver, Washington, staring at apocalyptically smoky skies, solving this mystery is the most important thing in my life.

Matthew Harris

Haha that's funny that you are playing along with the joke and pretending this is real.

At some point, an art director had to okay showing a tiny sliver of Cheerleader panties instead of just making that skirt slightly longer. And I wish I could meet that art director and shake their hand.

And there goes all of the Human Torch cool credits, FOREVER!

Goat Face

He is all of these things. It's the constant exposure to unstable molecules and mixing pym particles into the nangs at parties.

Jeff Orasky

H.E.R.B.I.E would have rocked this shit.

Quicksilver

ā€œCha-Cha, Babeā€ made me realize I should hear that sentence in Dennis Miller’s voice, and also that Sean’s Dennis Miller impression is now some sort of memetic infohazard.

Mister Sinistar

See this is why I liked the Iron Man cartoon, in that, well-known superhero Century hardly ever rapped.

Sebben

Fantastic 😓 Wack 🤩

"That cha-cha is worse than the fandango I saw Rae Dawn Chong do with Oingo Boingo at the Pink Flamingo". I'm pretty sure that just Manchurian Cadidated someone out there

sissyneck

haha yes yes please do a jack in the box Mac and me it would be cute to see him eat those weird tacos and also instead of a rotting bear suit he could wear the clown head to hide his gaper

Matt Edwards

It's reminded me how hot Rae Dawn Chong is, and made me wonder if she and Arnie got it on. It's about as mentally distracting as imagining Dolph Lundgren and Grace Jones.

Matt Edwards

None of the FF ever had any.

Is there a reason the Fantastic Four keep going? Every adaptation of them into other media has usually been dogshit, and I've never met anyone who likes the comics. Are there hordes of Fantastic Four Fffans out there who just stay really quiet about it?

Matt Edwards

Season two of that was genuinely good. Century was barely in it. I'm not saying there's a link there, but I'm not not saying there's a link there.

It's a curious phenomenon in comics, actually. As drawn by Jack Kirby, Ben Grimm is actually slightly shorter than Reed Richards (but much wider.) At some point it became in vogue to draw the Hulk as much larger than that, and the Thing, as Hulk's most notable punching partner, was sort of dragged along.
