So I wanted to expand on eco-friendly witchcraft and I wanted to talk about burying spell jars! Listen, we gotta stop burying jars. They are not good for the environment and this article explains why and alternatives you could use instead!

Why You Shouldn’t Bury Spell Jars

1. For starters, you want your spell to be a secret.

If you put a curse on someone (And you live in a rural town like myself), do you REALLY want someone to find that?

If you’re one of the few witches in the area and everyone knows it, that’s just asking for trouble.

2. Next, someone finding it and disturbing it can tamper with your entire spell. If someone might be curious, move it or open it and screw up the entire thing. That sucks.

3. It’s illegal to bury objects on some property whether private, public or government owned.

However, planting is perfectly fine in some areas! Research!

4. It’s bad for the environment. Glass and plastic containers do not break down!

I know we all like the aesthetic of burying a glass jar because of old ways and the media.

But from a modern standpoint, it’s unrealistic.

Besides, sometimes, your spell will be more powerful being released into the Earth from biodegrading than to be stagnant inside a container.

It’s the entire ideology behind Candle Magick!

Charge your candle, let the flame burn, once its extinguished your spell is released into the Universe.

Relatively the same concept!

We’re witches, we like jars! But we also like nature… We gotta care about it too.

So in light of the reasons why, here’s a list of alternatives to use instead.

1. Ice Cream Cones

Yep! Cheap, edible to any animal that gets ahold of them AND biodegradable.

Of course, the only issue is the hole at the top.

Either you can use a biodegradable tape such as Nursery Grafting Tape or you could use some rice paper!

Just place the rice paper on top of the whole and wet down the sides to seal it on top of the cone.

Pros: Easy access, edible

Cons: Open top, fragile, small

2. Egg Shells

Another alternative that’s actually really beneficial to soil!

Just crack the egg open and seal it together with the grafting tape mentioned previously.

Pros: Easy access, good for gardens

Cons: Fragile, small

3. Pulp Pots

Made out of pulverized newspaper and sold with most seed starters at greenhouses and gardening centers.

Just tape the top like before!

Pros: Easy Access, beneficial to soil, variety of sizes

Cons: Can get expensive, open top

4. Origami Boxes

This requires a bit of skill but if you can make boxes out of newspaper through origami

Cardboard take out boxes (Or any cardboard box) could also work if you have 0 paper folding skills

Like me

Pros: Efficient, Customizable

Cons: Requires some practice

5. Paper Rolls

My favorite because of how EASY it is!

Toilet paper rolls or paper towel rolls! (The cardboard in the center I mean)

Simply tape both ends! Or fold them in!

I’d say you use toilet paper in your home anyways (I hope), so why not make use of the cardboard roll afterwards?

Pros: Easy, Practical

Cons: Small

6. Citrus Peels

These food containers can come in handy if you need a center correspondent for a spell.

Simply cut a Citrus fruit (Grapefruit, Orange, Lemon, Lime) in half, remove the pulp and tape the leftover rind back together.

Great for energy spells and cleansing

Pros: Easy

Cons: Messy, Small

7. Hollowed Apples

Remove the top from an apple and scrape out the insides like you’re carving a pumpkin.

Make sure to not remove too much as it will make the apple walls thin and you might accidentally break it!

Place the top back on, securing it with tape if you like.

Or, you can even sew it back together with string (See the end for recommendations)

Great for love spells, Samhain, spirit work and Fertility

Pros: Easy

Cons: Time Consuming and or Tedious

8. Hollowed Peppers

Another great alternative are bell peppers! (Or any pepper really)

Just carve out the top… Done!

Bell peppers are pretty hollow so not much preparation is required.

Great for hearth/home spells and Prosperity Spells.

You can even use smaller hotter peppers for curses! (JUST WEAR GLOVES!)

Pros: Easy

Cons: None

9. Avocado Shells

Anyone that eats avocados knows you have to scrape the insides out anyways, so why not make use of the leftover shell?

Just tape it back together… Gently!

Great for Fertility spells

Pros: Efficient, Easy

Cons: Fragile

10. Coffee Filters

Take a large coffee filter, twist and tie the top with a jute or cotton string; both completely biodegradable!

Get creative! Color coordinate the string to help benefit your spell.

Pros: Easy

Cons: Small

Some of these options are easier than others, some harder.

But no matter what, its steps all of us witches can take to help the environment and to be more practical and Efficient witches.
