So I drew all that in one sitting. This is kind of a game changer.I tweeted a little about this, but I'll share it here too: this week I've made some discoveries, namely that the speed of Dresden Codak is held back by psychological issues on my part and not mechanical ones.I don't talk about it online much, but I deal with anxiety, and while it's ever-present, I never realized how much of an impact it had on my work and productivity until now. Just a few changes to organization (with the help of my amazing assistant) and, honestly, just believing in myself has turned a week's worth of work into something I can finish in a day.It looks like, ironically, I may actually be an incredibly fast cartoonist, but a sense of inferiority about not going to art school (and anxiety in general) has essentially kept me from letting myself be that. I'll probably jinx it by mentioning it here, but so be it.Thanks again to everyone who supports me here. I literally would not have made this breakthrough if we didn't reach the funding level to actually sit down and make this happen.

I only now have seen this post; I'm not sure why it suddenly appeared in my feed since it appears[1] to have been posted a long while ago? Nevertheless I must say: Your artwork is breathtaking; it's stunning; it's captivating. If you didn't go to art school I can only wonder what greatness we would see if fewer people went. I wait for your artwork each month, eagerly. The fact there's a story attached just makes your work even better. [note 1] the post says Feb of 2015, but maybe it was just posted now? In the context of your redrawing-effort?

Very glad I started funding :D

So glad to be contributing / helping this process!

That is true, we are our own worse critic. And when we encounter a negative opinion of our work, be it written or drawn, we tend to give it more credence than all the positive feedback we get. Well, here's some positive feedback Aaron. You're one damn fine artist, so stand up, brace those shoulders, make sure you don't overwork your drawing wrist, and go forth and make ART!

Roo

Wha...? You're self-taught? That is some superb talent, Aaron. Thanks to you and your assistant for the beautiful work you put together, and for letting those less talented (me) feel a part of the process - it brightens up my day as much as looking forward to a new Dresden Codak. Many thanks!

There are no less than one thousand people who believe in you, Aaron. We have faith that you will put your talents to use and we have been rewarded many times over. I too have anxiety around 'lack of edumacation' - I'm a High School Grad who tried to go back to school and simply didn't believe I could do it, and guess what - I was right. But you have a talent that school might not have helped. You have a history that nobody else can ever have. You are our Artist, and we are your Patrons. We believe.

Looks great. I'm always excited to see Dresden Codak updated cuz I know it'll be high quality. I suffer from anxiety at work and as a parent. I'm not sure I'm doing a good enough job at either, so I can empathize with you. Keep doing what you're doing. Your art is wonderful.

Happy to be a part of making things better. I can't wait for even more Dresden Codak in the future, at whatever pace, I know its always going to be an awesome mix of art/science/theology! Keep up the good work!

Having graduated from architecture school with a minor in art, I can tell you that "higher education" school is over-rated. At least in my experience. The only benefits of it seem to be providing a structured, scheduled environment (if you need structure) to practice, display your work to others, and be exposed to other's work (with some constructive criticism thrown in). All of these things can and are accomplished by web artists now. You clearly (to all of your Patrons and more) have not suffered from a lack of "higher education". In fact, I feel like I suffered during my schooling, being forced into pre-conceived molds and patterns. Your drawing style is unique and delightful. Your ability to construct, visualize, and share your complex environments alone is stunning. Your attention to character (internal and external), story development & continuity, and world-building blow my mind all the time. So, any time you start feeling anxious about your skills, just take a deep breath, step back, and take a look at the breadth of your skills from the outside. Your work is a joy to view, read, and experience. Thank you so very much for sharing it with us all.

You are hands down the best visual cartoonist on the web today. Thanks for sharing your work with us! Just keep being your awesome self! Glad I started funding =)

Dude, I can relate. As many others have opined re: "own worst critic", those obnoxious voices screaming inside of our own heads, loudly insisting that we are fooling ourselves if we think we are in the slightest bit worthy, are tough buggers to drown out. Funny how a thousand plus people who are putting their money where their collective mouths are can help us do the job, isn't it? That said, don't let yourself get too carried away. By committing to a reasonable, sustainable schedule will keep up funding, and keep you from burning out. Even if you find yourself doing multiple pages a week, don't commit to publishing more than 1 page weekly and you'll be able to build up a solid buffer for those lean times (ratzen fratzen creative blocks) or even (dare I say it?) a well earned VACATION. You know, to do something other than create. Crazy, right?

Anxiety is a very powerful, veeeery sucky thing. Best of luck, though!

Yay! Then I'm glad we all got the funding level up to "sharp nudge to the rins" status. Keep going, buddy!

Dark Science is my favorite comic, which is hard because it's so short, but it is going to be SO WORTH IT when this beast is finished and I can buy the X-part print collection and read it over and over and then give it to my future children to read over and over.

Dude, you dont need any fancy pantsy art scool degree when you got talent. Heck, my father never went to art school, he had to work after elementary school. But he paints the most amazing and realistic paintings out there, he didnt need no art school cause he has talent, and you kind sir have amazing talent. just because you lack a paper saying that you're talented doesnt make you any less. Keep up the good work and do what you love doing.
