that hand ... i'm reminded of what S.T.Joshi said somewhere about defining "weird fiction" ... (paraphrasing) ... if your character is worried about the dark, then reaches out for the doorknob of the bedroom closet, turns it, opens the door, and inside is a boogeyman -- that's horror. it could be a mundane killer, a psychological boogeyman, a real boogeyman like a goblin or mutant, or a supernatural one like a haunt or ghost, but it's all horror. we know exactly what to expect, because we have heard it all before, more or less. with horror the craftsman can shock, but not really surprise. however, if your character is worried about the dark, then reaches out for the doorknob, and the doorknob grabs the character back -- that's weird fiction. in weird fiction there is the chance to take the reader somewhere new, however briefly. with horror the reader might wonder who or what is out to get them. with weird fiction we have to wonder if reality has turned against us. all that to say -- i really dig that hand reaching up suddenly, and so unexpectedly. nicely done.
