comic processes - designing BATTLE JACKET (Patreon)
Content
The big villain, the former hero and the rival The writer for NO MODERATION recommended me for a project her partner was writing. I was going to say no. My schedule was already filling up for the Fall, and it'd been forever since I'd worked on a pitch package that wasn't solely for my own work.
But the writer described it to me as 'Kill la Kill meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer'.So here we are.
If you're not familiar, a pitch package is something you submit to editors for publishing consideration. The contents can vary, but on the art side it usually means anywhere from 6-12 sample pages, a cover and maybe some character art. For BATTLE JACKET, I'll be drawing 8 pages and a cover. The designs I show here are more for me and the writer to go over, because the outfits are super important to the story (which I love). It also acts as reference for me while I'm drawing.
The hero, Rainy! All the script asked for was a lavender chopped up haircut, septum piercing and a sweet looking jacket.
Playing around with different colours for the jacket, and a doggy design! Both the writer and I are very torn between the red and blue jacket colors. I originally decided on the blue, but I'm looking at it again and now I'm back on red! Tough choices, I know.
The writer sent me a collection of outfit/art references and *chef kiss* this is exactly the sort of thing I love to see. He even made a Spotify playlist to nail down the energy he was looking for. This kind of stuff just makes it clear what the style of not only the characters but the whole comic is going for.
The Pinterest board I built for the project, getting more into specifics of each character I was thinking of, but trying to keep with the same vibe as what the writer originally sent me. A lot of street fashion, blending in some fantasy elements too.
This project has been a lot of fun so far. I'm already working on the inks, and will talk more about the actual comic art next week.
