Slick Oil Kappa, Dochigame! ぬるぬるオイルのへらへら河童　どちがめ！ (Patreon)

Today's entry in the Youkai Gravure Encyclopedia is "Dochigame" from Gifu Prefecture in Japan!

"Dochigame" is considered a type of kappa in Gifu Prefecture, or perhaps a "soft-shelled turtle" that has been viewed as a youkai.

When Dochigame attacks people, the water turns thick like oil, making it impossible to swim. It then glides "with a grin" on its back, sticks tightly to a person’s stomach, and kills them.

Of course, the "Dochigame" in the world of ‘Anime-Tamae!’ has been transformed into a cute girl and doesn’t kill people...

But she might get mischievous, sticking to those who are captivated by her oily, slick body, and suck the victim much like a soft-shelled turtle!

You may remember "Gawairo", another kappa from Gifu Prefecture that I introduced before.

Gawairo is also a kappa who turns water sticky with poison from its plate, possessing a similar ability to Dochigame.

Since Gawairo was an expressionless type... In creating the character for Dochigame, I imagined her as a gyaru with a carefree and innocent demeanor, continually talking to Gawairo while smirking and laughing lightly.

Dochigame thinks of Gawairo as her "best friend," but she doesn't quite understand what Gawairo is thinking.

But they’re probably close, right...? They seem to attack humans together as the slick duo!

Kappa are youkai that are said to exist throughout Japan, but their traits and characteristics vary greatly by region. They are often associated with otters, turtles, or soft-shelled turtles, or have their elements mixed together. "Dochigame" is one such youkai with a blend of kappa and soft-shelled turtle characteristics.

Many similar creatures to "Dochigame" and "Gawairo" can be found in Gifu Prefecture and the surrounding regions.

"Dochiro" and "Dochirobei" are also kappa that turn water sticky. "Kawaranbe" is a creature where an animal similar to a "dochi" (soft-shelled turtle) disguises itself as a kappa-like humanoid to attack people.

In neighboring Aichi Prefecture, "Tochi" or "Dochi," local dialects for soft-shelled turtles, have also been depicted as kappa-like youkai.

In summary, it seems that around Gifu Prefecture, there are many kappa-type youkai that combine elements like "kappa," "soft-shelled turtle," and "making water sticky."

「どちがめ」は、岐阜県に伝わる河童の仲間…あるいは妖怪視された「すっぽん」です。

どちがめが人を襲うときは、水がトロトロと油のようになって、泳げなくなってしまいます。

どちがめは、そこへ仰向けで「へらへらと」やってきて、人間の腹にぴったりくっついて殺してしまうのだと言います。

もちろん『あにめたまえ！』世界で可愛い女の子になっている「どちがめ」は、人を殺してしまうことはありませんが…

オイルぬるぬるボディに見とれている人に、すっぽんみたいに吸い付いて、色々と悪いことをしちゃうのかもしれません！

同じ岐阜県の河童「ガワイロ」も、以前にご紹介しましたね。

ガワイロも、皿に入った毒で水をねばねばにする河童で、どちがめと似た能力を持っています。

ガワイロは無表情ダウナー系の子だったので…

どちがめは、「へらへら」という表現を「へらへら笑ってる」と解釈して、勝手気ままにガワイロに話しかけ続けてる天然ギャル…みたいなイメージで描いてみました。

どちがめはガワイロのことを「親友」だと思っているけれど、ガワイロが何を考えているのかは良くわかりません。

でも、たぶん仲良し…？

ヌルヌルコンビで人間を襲ったりしてそうですしね！

河童は全国に伝わる妖怪のようでいて、その性質や特徴は地方によって様々です。しばしばカワウソや亀、すっぽんと同一視されたり、要素が混交したりすることもあります。「どちがめ」は、そうした河童とすっぽんの要素が混じり合った妖怪的存在の一つですね。

「どちがめ」「ガワイロ」と似た存在は、岐阜県などに多数見られます。

「どちろ」「どちろべい」は、同じく水を粘っこくする河童。「かわらんべ」は、どち（すっぽん）に似た動物が、河童のような童子に化けて人を襲う存在。

近隣の愛知県でも、すっぽんの方言「とち」「どち」が河童のような妖怪になっていることもあります。

まとめると――岐阜県を中心に「河童」「すっぽん」「水をねばねばにする」といった要素が混じり合った河童系妖怪が、たくさん伝わっているようですね。
