Review of the Tower Challenge in 7 Days to Die (Patreon)
Content
Here's the short review - dying sucks a lot, try to stay alive.
Now, onto the longer version.
The point of the Tower Challenge is to create as close to a no-win scenario as possible without life become unbearable until it's definitely all over. That point is likely to occur when food and water can no longer be found.
Based on the first day of play not only is the no-win essence of the scenario definitely present, it's almost immediate if you die a lot early on. Every time a player dies everything they were carrying is gone forever. Food, water, weapons even wood... these are irreplaceable items. The time needed to get re-equipped and looting also increases very very quickly. The looting run I conducted at the end of the evening took 20+ minutes to get to somewhere that hadn't been stripped clean, and that will only get worse with each passing day.
This is actually working exactly as intended.
What I hadn't anticipated was how big the progress gap would be between those who died and those who stayed alive. Running around in your underwear trying to find a trashbag that hasn't been looted while someone in full armour riding a bike trots past is just-a-little demoralising.
Working together is the way to go. That the first day in the tower consisted of everyone splitting up and getting zombied to death basically didn't work. The first goal must be to work collectively to secure the whole tower, to repair staircases and to fortify against the horde. It'll still be a doomed mission, but this time maybe without the onset of doom quite so quickly.
I'll restart the server on Friday around game time. Everyone is welcome to hone their skills until then (although you can wait for the do-over.)
Be prepared!
The next version of this game *will* be an elimination challenge. Once you're dead, you're out! If it goes well we should be able to run it multiple times.
