KADE

It was over already. My mind was still thinking about the comma I forgot to write in her last sentence. The girl at my arm was talking about what kind of meal we should order for lunch. I focused on her for two minutes. The pricing on her choices started increasing. I smile at her. “Sure, why not that, then?”

Her eyes brighten up instantaneously.

“Really? You’d buy it for me?”

And there it is. End scene.

I’ve already wandered off in my head. We take the next practiced steps to the cafe, order her meal, order mine, pull out the card. Next, we sit down, we laugh, we talk about the next new item on this make up line she is currently following. She tells me I’m the best friend she’s ever had.

I wake up again alone. I’m standing in front of the school building, having just turned on my headphones.

“Hey, hey, hey!” I hear behind me. “There’s your long time English nerd rival!”

I turn around. “Hello, Mint-Lavender Hand Sanitizer.”

“That was an evil prank you did, okay?” She snarled. “My hands smelled like a dead rat for the next two weeks. How did you even get your hands on that toxin?”

I can’t help but smile. I shrugged. “The elites have their own special strings they can pull.”

She snorted, taking my headphones from my hands and looking at them. “These are pretty good.”

“How would you know?”

“I saved up to get them, obviously.” She grinned.

“Yeah? I just got them.”

“Trying to steal my look, huh, city boy?”

“It isn’t your look, city girl.” We stood next to each other, looking at the building before us. I was fighting a smile.

Someone shoved into her, getting in between us. The headphones fell out of Min’s hands and clattered on the concrete.

“Hey! What is wrong with you?” The newcomer screeched. I was already out of the situation again.

I walked over, picking up my headphones. I gave Min a cold glance. She held my look. I noticed the subtle furrow in her brow.

“C’mon, Kade, let’s get away from her.”

“Right.” I agreed, and walked off.

Yeah, well. I got these headphones because you had them. I wanted to say, but my mouth felt dry. I held the device like it was a broken doll.
