Getting started and getting a key

If you don't know where to start, please see the The Documentation. Before you can use some of the features of DDB Importer you must link your Patreon account with DDB Importer using the following link: https://activate.ddb.mrprimate.co.uk/ . You can find out how do this by following the Initial Setup Documentation.

Support Steps

The best way to get in touch and ask troubleshooting questions is via Discord https://discord.gg/rF6XGUa3gE if you're not sure which channel, please use #support. Please do not DM me support issues unless they are related to Patreon, or use Patreon post comments to request support, Patreon notifications are unreliable and it's difficult to share screenshots and commands.

Rien Sharp

This is an incredible module for Foundy VTT, thank you!!!

Sean Howard

This Module made my game what it is! Thank you for working this hard!

Seatbelt

Extraordinary, thankyou so much!!!

robert schaefer

Module update erased tons of player journal notes inside their character sheets. Data just vanished and now they are upset with me. I had journals/bios turned off on the DBB setting. Really embarrassing situation.

MrPrimate

If you're using a journal entry in the character sheet, then in sounds like maybe you're using Tidy Sheet. Did you also update to the latest 5e version and Tidy sheet, as there was a change which meant that the journal sheet data needed to be migrated as it was stored in the wrong place. See https://github.com/sdenec/tidy5e-sheet/issues/627

I’ve been a supporter for over a year and deeply appreciate all your work. It has revolutionized my, and my players’ experience. I have a question. Will my patreon key work with more than one instance of foundryvtt? I’m going to be visiting a friend who has their own foundry install and am trying to figure out if I can let him use my importer key? I suspect not and don’t want to do something stupid by mistake?

Travis Bigrigg

I have joined as a Patron. I was able to import DDB characters and source books and was able to generate fttadv for Waterdeep Dungeons of the Mad Mage. My question is how do I import the adventure into FTT? New to Foundry and any assistance/advise would be appreciated.

Eric Tennison

I joined a little while back and cannot get the DDB importer to work at all. I have reinstalled Foundry, changed to earlier versions, worked with my buddy (who recommended it) to troubleshoot but got nowhere. I have the module installed but am unable to see/activate it as a module in any new/existing world. I also have no way to edit its Core functions like it shows in the tutorial so am pretty much at square one with no way to advance. Any advice/thoughts?

MrPrimate

That's very strange, can you join the Discord and post some screen shots and version information in the #help channel?

Eric Tennison

Sorry for the slow reply, I will post some screenshots on discord. Are there particular things you want to see in those images?

MrPrimate

Screenshots of the installed module, and then in a world a screenshot of the Foundry and D&D5e version

Richard Jones

I'm attempting to yet again create a fttadv for Xanathar's guide to everything... Is this book just not availible

MrPrimate

It often runs out of memory on some computers l, due to how table linking works, due to the large number of tables. Improving it is on my backlog.

William Shumpes

Does the DDB only download a few monsters? I'm looking for a specific one, but I don't see It.

MrPrimate

You need to own it on DDB or have it shared via a campaign

Patrick Roark

Hi, I'm trying to import class and class features and it seems to be skipping over Drakewarden subclass for Ranger even though I own it. It appears to be pulling everything else.

MrPrimate

Did you recently purchase it, and can you create a character with the subclass within DDB?

Richard Hilge

doesn't seem to want to download monsters from grim hollow or drakkenheim (i own both on beyond). i can individually get them to download, but not when i select munch monsters

Mitch

Hi I'm having an issue. As soon as i created a key to connect my patreon subscription, I'm no longer able to open the "Core Setup" menu within foundry. I was following the video guide exactly, imported spells, items, subbed to import monsters and can no longer access the main settings for DDB Importer to input my subscription key. I've tried creating a new game, disabling all other modules, resetting DDB settings to default, resetting all game settings to default, re-installing the module, even re-installing foundry. Cannot open the core settings menu at all

affinno

When Foundry eventually updates to v12, am I going to have to re-munch all my monsters, etc?

MrPrimate

Not unless there are big changes in 5e to support it

Ray Struden

Morning! I'm new here and I don't know if my question has been resolved before or not. Here I go: I've seen that in the compendium there are Race, Background, Classes, Subclasses... But I can't find any way to import them from DnD Beryond to Foundry VTT. Is there any way to do it?

MrPrimate

Hello, it's on the tab/section called Characters in the DDB Muncher screen.

Ray Struden

Oh, I see, thanks ☺️

Tom Pafford

I don't know if this is the right spot to put this but I just joined your patreon and I'm trying to start pulling DDB stuff into foundry and it is stuck on "parsing spell data" and has been there over 15 mins. I'm sure that this is user error, can you help.

MrPrimate

Best place is to pop across to the discord and we can get you sorted with some troubleshooting steps

Ivan Sydorenko

Hello, i entered the key but in foundry steal show account not connected

MrPrimate

Please pop across to the discord and we can sort out the issue

Jack Sigman

Did I miss where to grab the patreon key? Can't seem to find it anywhere.

zumarius

Is there a way to munch feats into a compendium? I can't find anything in the tool.

Nate Palumbo

is there a way to pay once for access to the tool or must we pay monthly?

Algor Langeaux

The bit about paying monthly is because it is still under active development... so "just getting access to the tool" that will keep on getting updated and improved, without paying for it, isn't going to motivate someone to keep investing their time and energy.

MrPrimate

You can run your own proxy if you wish, there is a link in the documentation, but you're on own setting it up, and it doesn't do everything, but will get you the ability to import items, characters, monsters and spells, but without some of the fancy magic item linking that my proxy does. This is (more than!) a full time job for me, both ecosystems are constantly changing. The money goes to running various project infrastructure and paying my salary. I'm also perfectly fine with you subbing for a month when you need to import and coming back never/if you need to reimport/etc

Itauã Pedro Conceição

I'm not sure if this is the right way to report this, but I couldn't find another option. I'm having trouble importing the Dragon's Delve adventure. The DDB Adventure Muncher does not create a .fvttadv file, despite showing a success message. Is there a tutorial on how I can fix this?

MrPrimate

Best place is to hop over to the discord and we can help you out there!

2026-09-06 01:00 Anyone else facing the issue with DDB importer not turning on? Recently i've noticed it's unticked in foundryVTT hosted on the forge but when i tick it on and reload it's off again. Nothing i seem to do makes it turn on to reimport the players data as they've leveled up now...
2025-08-17 15:31

MrPrimate

The most recent version of DDB Importer is only for D&D 5.1 (see details in the last patreon update post)

Stéphane Lleres

Hello, I replace the old key by a new one, exactly like you show in your post, but it doesn't work : Foundry always asks a new key. What did I do wrong ? Thank you for your excellent work.

Miguel Felix

Cant generate an adventure muncher config file, every time i click the button, nothing happens.

MrPrimate

A) Make sure you are on the latest version of DDB Importer B) D&D Beyond was having issues earlier, so might be related to that If you are on the latest version and still getting the error, please go to the discord and upload a debug file to a new support thread (generate on the muncher Info -> Help section)

Gene Ksenzakovic

Quick Question, Regarding the recommended modules for the importer, are there alternatives as I don't see them available for FoundryVTT 14.x? Some of them as old as only working with 11. Thanks,

MrPrimate

Active Token Effects will be sunset for v14 as these can (kindof) be done natively, but still requires some work in DND5e system. DAE will be v14 compatible, but is not yet. Vision 5e and Tokenizer are both v14 compatible. Those are the only modules I recommend https://docs.ddb.mrprimate.co.uk/docs/ddb-importer/initial-setup#recommended-modules There are automation modules, but I do not recommend them, they are there for folks who wish to use them, the best place to find out about them is the MidiQOL discord which is all about automation. Automation modules typically take several months to migrate to new versions of foundry due to the large degree of change.

Alejandro Garcia

Hi Mr. Primate good morning!, unless I am much confused, the Coffe Tier link does link to a Dec 1 2020 message, does this mean the December key work also this month?

MrPrimate

Good Morning Alejandro! I've not posted the January key yet so don't worry! The December key will work for a few more days and there will be a few days overlap when I post the new keys.

Robbie G

Thanks, I was confused as well!

Jared Fritz

My man, first Patreon I've ever supported, best $4 I ever spent so far, keep it up!

yovy lund

Thank you so much for building this tool! This is the best $4 extension to Foundry on any planes, material or astral. ~Can't wait to much em all for $4! Keep up the great work!~

Tony Z.

It's Feb 14, and there's still no February key? Love the module so much, but the key juggling is less than ideal...

MrPrimate

Hi Tony, I updated the post from January with the new key details - it _should_ have sent an update. I understand about the key juggling - hoping to address this soon.

Alessandro Di Stefano

HEy MrPRimate a question, with this your module is possbile to import source book from Beyond (like Xanathar)?

MrPrimate

Not really - it's intention is to get characters and monsters in for you to play with in foundry.

Chris Couture

Hello MrPrimate, the monster parsing was so so for me, I figure its maybe because I need a newer key? I just joined is there a new key per month?

Chris Couture

I got about 190 imported monsters from the MM and about 7 other books. I noticed a lot missing like Beholders and Dragons. I'll try to find and ask on the discord.

Chris Couture

Ah an update today fixed it, thank you!

Chris Steele

It looks like D&D Beyond may have changed their monster format. I've only been able to import about 1/4 of the available monsters, the rest are "parse failed". VTT Assets is doing the same thing which is why I think it might be a problem with the source. Any ideas? (I'm on version 0.2.1)

MrPrimate

There was a change - if you update to the latest version it should be fixed. I think this is 0.4.17

JG Wentworth

Hey MrPrimate! Not sure if this is the right place to ask this, but I have a few races that I can't change the icon on. Is there a setting I need to change on DDB importer, or Muncher? Thanks!

MrPrimate

If they are in a compendium you need to drag them into your world first, update and then add them back, it's a current limitation of Foundry, but will be fixed in the next big release.

Patch

Does not work for me at all

MrPrimate

Hi @Patch - can you describe the problem you are having please?

joseph macgregor

anyone gone to version 0.8.5 on foundry and having troubles importing?

MrPrimate

There is a beta branch for undying+ patreons, if your not at that tier you'll have to wait till the weekend!

💙Kev

On 0.7.10, the module will not allow me to paste or type anything into the Cobalt Cookie or Patreon Key fields. The campaign URL field works, and highlights in blue, but the highlight on the other two is red. _ Edit _ Resolved: I use a dark mode UI module due to vision issues, and it makes the paste field dark while leaving the dots within it dark as well. The text was pasting, I just couldn't see it. I guess D&D5e Dark Mode could use some adjustments to make it a better accessibility tool.

EonOftheDark

Hello! I have been seeing issues with the eldritch claw tattoo. It does not add the plus 1 to attack and damage rolls. Wondering if anyone has had similar issues.

MrPrimate

I'll add it to the list of things to check out!

Chris Ferguson

Muchos Gracias for this mod and all that you do. Showing my support as a Twitch D&D streamer and loving what you've done to make our world easier to play in :)

Luka Tonkovic

Quick question, i'm probably dumb, but i can't import Artificer for some reason, anyone know why?

MrPrimate

Can you provide a character link? Easier to troubleshoot in the Discord if you're on it

Jason Bergman

Quick comment: I LOVE the importer, and it's great that you update it so frequently (seems like every day, or even more than once a day??). As a rule, I never run updates before a session, so that nag message is annoying. Can you set it so it only appears with major changes or something?

MrPrimate

There is a secret setting that you can turn on to stop the nag messages, open the browser console (F12) and run: game.settings.set("ddb-importer", "update-check", false);

Jason Bergman

Does the nag only show up for DM, or is it for players as well?

MrPrimate

Hey! Sometimes the importer can be a bit wonky if it's got some bad settings in during one of the bug upgrades, but don't worry, you can reset them using the following: Open the browser console (F12) and run: game.settings.set("ddb-importer", "cobalt-cookie-local", false); game.settings.set("ddb-importer", "cobalt-cookie", ""); game.settings.set("ddb-importer", "campaign-id", ""); This should then allow you to open the core settings and re-enter your key etc.

Jimmy Yip

Having an issue linking my patreon account to the module. It asks me to allow or deny DBB importer to view public profile and email address but when I click accept it just shows a white page with the word error in the upper left corner.

MrPrimate

Hi Jimmy - I'm not at a computer right now, but at the start of the month Patreon can sometimes have problems as it processes payments. If you use a key linked in one of the above posts then the importer should work for you and I'll try to get to the bottom of the problem later today

CriticaLink

My key is working for Munching most content but it doesn't seem to be able to munch the new content from Ravenloft. As it's not importing any of the creatures from there.

CriticaLink

I was a bit taken aback but looking through it more it's also omitting other monsters like Mind Flayers from the Muncher. Not sure what I could be doing wrong seeing as the Cobalt and Patron Key are up to date.

MrPrimate

Hi - are you using a filter on the "Source filters" button - this is easy to be caught out by. Are you able to find the monsters you want to search for on the DDB Encounter Builder section of the app - this will ensure you have access to them. If you can get on discord it's a bit easier to chat their -screen shots etc and Patreons notifications can be a bit lacking. Thanks

Andrew Wilson

Hi MrPrimate. Love the importer! I'm struggling to import monsters at the moment at Coffee tier. I've tried adjusting the source filters, and munching spells first, made sure I copied over the monthly key, but I always seem to import 0 monsters. Anything you'd recommend trying?

MrPrimate

Hi Andrew - first step would be to clear the filters to make sure that nothing is selected, make sure the latest module version is installed. If that doesn't work, pop along to the discord - I'm on vacation this week and have limited internet, but someone should be able to help you out.

Andrew Wilson

Thanks for the reply. I found the problem, I hadn't updated the DND5e System. All sorted now!

James Mickelson

This tool is a lifesaver! Thank you so much for sharing this with the world!

Tib

How does monster importing work? I had assumed it would be a button in the title bar of an actor window in FoundryVTT, but there's nothing. I'm on FoundryVTT 0.8.9, successfully (I assume, the detection process with Patreon didn't complain) got the key and saved settings. then reloaded the whole page (but didn't restart the foundry app itself).

Tib

There we go, thanks!

Benjamin Cushing

How long does the monster import take? Should I assume there's an issue if it exceeds an hour? Thanks!

MrPrimate

If nothing has happened yes! You should be getting information as each monster is imported

MrPrimate

Best troubleshooting is to pop open the browser console (F12) and see if there are any error messages and hope over to our discord to help troubleshoot

PepRab

How do i import homebrew monsters? I already checked 'Include Homebrew?' and 'Homebrew monsters only?' but it just won't import anything. Thanks!

MrPrimate

It will only import monsters in your homebrew collection, so make sure you have added them on DDB

PepRab

Do they need to be public? Because i got them in my collection.

MrPrimate

No, private is fine - if you open up the browser console (F12) do you get any errors when importing homebrew only? (If you are able may be quicker to hop onto discord to post screen shots etc)

PepRab

No errors... I'll be on discord in a sec ^^ thx

Justin Janger

Attempting to update an imported D&D Beyond character for the first time after updating my key and I get a "TypeError: Cannot read property 'id' of undefined." Anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

Jeffrey R

Make sure your DND beyond updater is up-to-date - this should be fixed now

2026-09-06 01:00 Just a quick question: I have the coffee tier, and it imports most, but it does not bring in the feats, class/monster features, etc. Is that part of the beta section of the undying tier? Or am I missing something. Thanks!
2021-11-16 01:59

MrPrimate

Feats and races are available on the "Experimental" tab at coffee tier. Classes and class features are "undying" and there are still a few class features missing. I don't bring in monster features as although they follow similar syntax, almost all of them are different/ customised per monster

MrPrimate

If you can try the latest version of the importer, and if that doesn't work, hop along to the discord and we'll try to get it sorted out

Jason Criswell

I understand the reason for limiting the keys to activating at the end of the following month, but if you could possibly make an exception (for everyone) right now that would be kind of a big deal. Since WotC is doing an update that is massively altering the content, we need to get it before D&D Beyond changes everything (including changing spellcasting monsters into a format I can't even use for my games). I'd be willing to prepay a couple months if I can get access to the ability to import my content immediately.

MrPrimate

Hi Jason you should be able to import your content right now using the keys linked from the pinned post or by connecting to patreon from with the settings screen

Jason Criswell

Thanks; yeah I got it to work. I just didn't understand what the post meant and was in panic mode after realizing I needed to get my content from D&D Beyond before it was gone forever.

Philip Goodley

I followed the different advice for this but it just keeps telling me its checking my DDB details and it will take a few seconds

Travis Shorter

I'm having problems importing stuff. It can't open a "certain" spell compendium when I try and update one of my characters sheets. I get "Error parsing character: Error: unable to open the compendium *********.spells"

Travis Shorter

I've tried turning the offending module off and such but no luck.

Raf Roaf-Esparza

I don't know what happened but I am no longer able to open DDB Muncher in foundry VTT.

Lukas Prism

Sorry if this has been asked before – monster descriptions are only coming through to the Biography if it has the header 'Description' on the DDB website. Is there a way to get all the descriptions munched in? Most of them seem to be missing from the actors in my compendium.

Lukas Prism

Ah makes sense. Thanks for the reply. Hopefully they fix that at some stage! At least there is a handy link to their site in the title bar :) Appreciate your legendary work

Michael Andai

2 weeks ago everything worked, now I can't import 2 out of 4 characters. I get "Error parsing character: TypeError: Cannot set properties undefined (setting"3") The other character gets the same but with a 6

Red Dragon Game Development Services

I've been having a similar issue. Mine says "Error parsing Character: TypeError: Cannot read properties of undefined (reading 'proficiency groups')"

MrPrimate

Sorry both, please try the latest update

Tim Rich

When I click copy from Clipboard on the Beyond the DataGrabber extension doesn't copy anything to the clipboard.

MrPrimate

Sometimes you need to refresh the DDB page before it will grab. If it's still not working you may need to manually select it

Gonk

How do I update characters? it says please import d&d beyond items into your compendium first. The thing is I have imported the compendiums tho

MrPrimate

Make sure that the Compendium set in the DDB Importer -> Compendiums setting is correct - sometimes it can become incorrect. Double check to make sure that compendium has some stuff in from DDB

Bill Wimsatt

Just started the install for Adventure Muncher and get this message: “ddb-adventure-muncher” can’t be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software.

Bill Wimsatt

thank you! Old trick this old dog forgot. Got it working! much appreciated. Great extension, BTW.

EntityMAAD

When i installed the module, it doesn't show up in the 'manage modules' section of settings?

MrPrimate

And you're installing on version 9 of Foundry?

Denny Wright

Hey Bill! Imagine the odds I'd be setting up an adventure about the same time as you! I probably would have hit the same hurdle. Thanks!

Limeware Platter

Works great and saved me hours of work, Thank you!!!

John Anglin

Happy to join. I just got Foundry to start dming on Startplaying, and you have saved me so much time with the importer! You are amazing my friend, and with the Adventure Muncher have cut my prep time way down on building my maps for foundry.

RPGX Studios

Thank you for your hard work. Saved me a ton of time.

Eben Smith

I really appreciate how great this module is. Keep up the great work!
