All hail the new Minister for Religious Genocide!

Always enjoyed this episode, even though its basic setup is exactly the same as the Archbishop episode from series 1. I can see why they moved it from episode 1 to 2 though, Bells was definitely a better launch episode for the series. There is a very good BBC Documentary called Blackadder Rides Again that goes into detail about the changes from series 1 to 2, along with excellent behind the scenes for the whole show. Well worth watching when you get to the end of all 4 series.

Dryfesands

In answer to Paula's question about the thought process behind the changes between Series 1 and 2, there's a lot of detail in there which I'm sure others will chime in on, but one of the big ones was simply the fact that Blackadder very very nearly didn't get a Series 2. It was up for renewal and the new Director of the BBC (that's a whole story in and of itself) very nearly binned it due to the budget of the first series vs the patchy outcome. It took the producers and writers coming back with a much, much. cheaper version with far fewer sets and a smaller cast for Series 2 to get the go-ahead. This however turned out to be a blessing in disguise as it meant everything had to be much more based on dialogue rather than spectacle (no castles and background extras now). You're lucky if you get an episode with more than just the two sets of Blackadder's front room and the Throne Room plus one other for the episode. Thus the whole thing became vastly tighter and the scripts became incredibly well honed and rehearsed (a process many involved found torturous). The pay off in terms of quality of dialogue and structure of the episodes is obvious. I like much of Series 1, but I don't think even it's ardent defenders could say cracks along at this pace, and with this back and forth of dialogue.

Dryfesands

Agreed, I think that's a must watch,

My favourite Blackadder fact is that the writers were apparently initially concerned that if they made Edmund TOO self-serving, amoral, vain, insulting etc. the character would become unlikable. Then after doing the show a while they realised it was the opposite. The worse he got, the more audiences related to him...

A simply fantastic piece of British farce that just zings along like, I dunno, a man who's just been beheaded. Holly de Jong (Farrow's widow, er wife) has some sci-fi chops, having been in a Doctor Who radio drama and played Newt's mother in the directors cut of Aliens. Miranda Richardson is just a fabulous actress who has enough range that she probably could have played Elizabeth I seriously; there will be a moment on a later episode where she does just that. I've practically memorised the dialogue off by heart over the years; I use the 'birdneck and birdbrain' line all the time!

Mark Ten

If you didnt catch the closing lyrics, it's established that he is the great-grandson of the original. "His great-grandfather was a king, although for only thirty seconds."

GillyBean

dont worry Pals, S2 Blackadder was one of my childhood crushes so i get it

There's a documentary on the show that you might enjoy watching (it's free on youtube) when you finish it. I Haven't watched it in a long time, so I only remember bits and pieces of information, non of which are the answeres to your questions, however one funny piece of info I do remember is that Rowen Atkinson actually had a speech impediment that made sounding B and P letters difficult for him, he would practice and needed to explode them in order to make the words flow, which resulted in the co-writer falling in love with his pronunciation of the word "Bob" and inserting a character by that name) -

Can i get a link to the discord? I looked ahead to the 1st episode of series 3 & there is 2 blackamore statues either side the fireplace.

Miranda Richardson is so good as the Queen. Sweet and menacing at the same time! Also pay attention next week you might see a familiar face. Some crazy guy who traded in his blue box for a boat.

There are a couple of documentaries - The Whole Rotten Saga, and Blackadder Rides Again - but they’re both full of spoilers so you need to leave them until after series 4 🤓 According to the producer there were forty actresses who they auditioned before Miranda but none of them really fitted. And even then they didn’t have ‘Queenie’ until she re-rehearsed a scene and went in a totally different direction.

Buck Rogers

If I need to concentrate and try to avoid mistakes, saying "We are not at home to Mr. Cock-up" does the trick

Sebastian Bodine

Weren't one of those documentaries made while they were making that New Year's special "Back and Forth"?

Sebastian Bodine

I love the opening bit with "some beans". Makes me want to combine with the "how many lights do you see?" scene from TNG

Travis Boyle

Should of sent the Fuzzy Peaches again instead of the Swedish Berries. At least the Gummy Dinos led to a fun opening video. Lol

They got another series on the proviso that the budget was slashed. So they built smaller sets and re-used existing ones. A smaller cast as well with few guest stars and basically no extras. So it feels small and cheap but adds to the humour strangely. The jokes are so much funnier, even the historical ones, and the stories feel much better structured and contained. This world-weary Blackadder also suits Atkinson better than the slimy pathetic one as well. It just works so much better like this and is pretty much the template for the rest of the season. You get a building up of the cast and familiar faces. After this season you get Ricahrdson back for two eps, Bob back for one, Stephen Fry back, Hugh Laurie (who turns up twice in S2) and even Mrs Miggins outs in an appearence after just mentions here.
