Probably my favourite series overall! Pleasantly surprised to see this, entirely down to my own obliviousness. Can’t wait to watch it later; I think others have mentioned it but chronologically there’s a 10 minute Comic Relief special (the Cavalier Years said during the British Civil Wars, specifically after the second) that takes place between 2 and 3 - and a Christmas special (Blackadder’s Christmas Carol) at the end of this series Cavalier Years is here on the official Red Nose channel, even if you don’t react to it it’s worth a watch https://youtu.be/_SXf9-Z3jwk?si=ktY7Evr1KDJ2VBaL

Must admit, this series isn’t my favourite, I’d put 2 and 4 both above it. But it’s still pretty strong. The reduced cast takes a little getting used to, but Hugh Laurie puts in a brilliant performance throughout, and there’s some great guest stars to come. This version of Blackadder is probably the most deviously intelligent version of all the ones we encounter.

After 2 series playing the idiot Percy, Tim felt he'd had enough of that and (amicably) opted out of this series. As for the rest of the absentees I think it was a combination of the writers wanting a smaller cast and some actors not being available for the whole of the filming etc.

Lintrinsic

Where did he get the money? In reality he was on the civil list, and even then he incurred massive debts from spending, gambling and womanising and parliament kept bailing him out. He was Regent because his father George III was suffering from one of many bouts of mental illness, this one lasting around a decade IIRC and the Prince was standing in as Monarch.

Fun Fact: The in-universe gap between Series 2 and 3 is the longest in the entire show. 'The Black Adder' was set in the 1480s and 1490s 'Blackadder II' is set in the 1560s (judging by the gravestone we see in 'Money' and Queen Elizabeth being a young woman.) 'Blackadder the Third' is set in the 1810s during the Regency. 'Blackadder Goes Forth' is set during World War One. So a 70 year gap between 1 and 2, then a huge 250 year gap between 2 and 3 and then a 100 year gap between 3 and 4.

Just noticed Howard Goodall did the music in this - he also did the music for Red Dwarf!

I think this episode hits better if you're more familiar with British politics. The Standing-at-the-back-etc. guy is a direct copy of our tradition of 'joke' parties (the classic being the Monster Raving Loony Party) who really do get to stand on stage next to the ACTUAL prime minister during elections wearing ridiculous outfits (look up Count Binface). The guy doing the news program in front of the open window was Vincent Hanna, an actual journalist known mainly for covering by-elections (which is why he's credited as his own great-great-grandfather). Several famous quotes also get paraphrased, like "a week is a long time in politics" (attributed to PM Harold Wilson), and "go back to your constituencies (kitchen sink, you see) and prepare for government!" (leader of the Liberal party, who did not get into government).

Americans first mainstream exposure to Hugh Laurie was through House. Most Brits was though this clown. 🤣 BIII is a bit of a hybrid between I & II; it's a bit wordier and a lot more slapstick and satirical of the era (Elton, duh), and this episode is a perfect example of this, and of British politics. Oh, and the Whigs are the precursor to the Conservative Party here in the UK.

Alex Bennett

No Whigs where precursors to the Liberal Party witch merged into the Lib Dem’s

Skyrous

The prince has all the money because he's part of the British royal family. He's king Charles great, great, great, great, great grandfather.

Chris Devlin

I always miss Miranda Richardson when I move onto series 3. She steals every scene she is in in series 2 (Except perhaps when Flashheart is around).

Ross Nolan

I agree. I have to admit one thing I hadn't noticed was how very very male Series 3 (and 4) is. We do get a couple of female characters (no spoilers!) but far fewer than in Series 2 which had the fantastic Queenie and Nursie in the main cast and multiple memorable women in guest star roles (Bob, Lady Farrow, the mad old crone from 'Bells', Molly the inexpensive prostitute, Lady Whiteadder...). I think that's something I'm more prone to notice now and find it more annoying, especially given we are in the era of Jane Austen.

Paul McBryde

i am glad kat made the decision to pause, paula was about to pass away from holding in that cough, kat basically saved paula's life

this one is funnier when you realise with dismay the the UK electoral system still mostly works like this -- ie. badly. Also, I now realise that the character of Blackadder changes quite a lot with each series and not just between 1 and 2. Which makes sense, because it's not the SAME person.

clara trevlyn

"Ink and Inkability?" You might want to try reading that again.

Mark Ten

Tim McInnerny left because he was afraid of being typecast. The Prince became regent when his father George III became unfit due to insanity (after the American Revolution). The Prince got Parliament to pay for his over extravagant lifestyle. By his own words he was "rather too fond of women and wine". Overweight, overdressed & oversexed he wasnt the cretin pictured here. He was a patron of the arts, music & science. History's judgement is that he was a talented buffoon... I dont know anything bad to say about his real life butler or dogsbody

Kieran B

Whigs are Liberals and then Lib Dems, Tories have been Tories since the lead up to the Glorious Revolution and earliest Jacobite Wars (same as the Whigs, they emerged out of the same issues on opposite sides)

Kieran B

He’s done all the music in Blackadder 😀

Kieran B

And series 4 has the narrowest and clearest window, its most likely just 1917 but could feasibly be 1916–1917 but not any earlier; this one is probably the one that jumps about the period most if drawing real parallels - there’s separate references to Nelson and Trafalgar (as not yet happened) which would make it 1805 and a certain episode which would have to be 1790s - despite both being broad Regency neither of course are the Regency proper. If we ignore the Pitt the Elder reference because he died in 1778 and take the Bonaparte reference along with the others, if we had to nail this series down to a timeframe, it would be 1799 to 1805 :D

Gray

Probably my least favourite ep of the season, some good ones coming up though. S4 still the best so looking forward to that.

Absent With Concept

Third is my favourite Blackadder, it's probably got the highest joke rate of any of the series, but yes, the gags are generally a bit wordier, with a lot of historical references and more satirical elements. But it makes me laugh the most. That said, this is by far the worst episode of the series, a very strange choice to open on given that it's the least typical, with more guest sets and characters, barely any Mrs Miggins, odd stuff like the bi-election coverage and way more topical jokes than normal. Once you get into the main run of the series I hope you'll find yourselves enjoying it more!

David Shadwell

You probably don't recognise the MP who died, Buxomley, but he is an actor called Dennis Lill.... who played the simulant captain in the Red Dwarf ep Gunmen of the Apocalypse. He is one of three actors from Red Dwarf in this series..... along with Lee Cornes as one of the romantic poets and a rather odd but faintly familiar French jailer.
