Here's what you need to know about the rest of the series: You should watch it.

Mike Connaghan

Whether you like it or not is up to you. XD

Mike Connaghan

I mean, maybe how you feel is involuntary, but... you get it.

I think that the "you can only have a child if you love someone" thing was maybe inserted to better justify the Cylons' plan for Helo from season 1 (which in reality they didn't really know what to do with when they started..)

Troy Convers

1) Yeah Paula, we've all thought the same about them never reaching a planet at this point. Welcome the weary Galactica fan club. 🤣 2) Is the pianist a Daniel?!? Or THE Daniel? He sires a daughter, then disappears because...he was killed by Cavill? So Kara is...a hybrid? Why has a medical scan not picked this up? 3) Those chords he plays when he starts on the second movement are the opening chords in the OG series! 4) Boomer's arc is absolutely Shakespearean and I'm all here for it. The Eights differ wildly from unit to unit and Boomer's set of experiences has just set her up to be a cad who just *sometimes* does the right thing, but does the wrong thing a whole lot more. Tyrol being the plot stupidian of the week is annoying though. 5) But remember, this is Season 4 writing; if the jury rigged writing turns out fine it's a happy accident. If not, ah, BSG superfans just pretend it was purposely left ambiguous. 🤣

I always had the impression that at the start, the 7 organic Cylons started out as children and Cavil killed Daniel before he'd fully matured and destroyed all the copies. As for the Song, I've come to view it as cosmic background radiation, floating through space, like how Wanda broadcast her show in Wandavision. So there's this Song floating through space that only a few can hear. Leoben even talks about how the universe viberats with "the unstruck music." He also talks about swimming in streams and standing on the shore, and all I can think is how both music and water can wash over you and flow... At one point as the regular Cylons walk away from Anders, she talks about connecting him to the datastream... again, how the Cylons' ships are controlled through liquid interfaces. I don't get Tyrol's vote to leave last episode, except to blame Jane Espenson's "writing for the scene" style, but here, I get it, he's in Love. And a man in love is a stupid creature. As for the show focusing on Boomer and Helo uncomfortably long... that was the point. To make you feel uncomfortable. Sometimes media isn't meant to be just enjoyed, or entertaining. Sometimes it's supposed to make you feel awful. I think lately media literacy has gotten too binary to where something is considered good if it's entertaining, regardless of a technical, objective assessment of quality. "Deadlock" was not a quality episode, it failed in its technique. "Someone to Watch Over Me." IS a quality episode. It makes one feel a range of emotions, the use of score so heavily in the narrative, the twists and turns of the character motivations and manipulations, the tying of arcs together and the establishment of the mood, all good. How the episode makes you feel? Dejected, melancholy, even angry at character choices, arguably not entertaining. Still a good episode. This is why for me, actual media literacy extends SO far beyond "It was fun, I was entertained, therefore it is good." That is just some lazy, low-level engagement there, IMO, not helpful at all. Thank goodness the Pals spend these post episode thoughts digging further than that.

A note about the score: Bear McCreary of course composed alm the music in this episode, but he realized that the sound of that old piano, in that hanger deck bar, would not be authentic sounding were he to just use the equipment in his studio. So he sampled EVERY NOTE ON THE PIANO, in the bar to write his music with. The piano you hear in the episode is the piano the actors are playing in the show. And that is why Bear has gotten so successful, because he's dedicated.

I think this was in-character for Sharon. She is conflicted, capricious, deceitful and manipulative. We had a glimpse of it when Athena boarded the base ship recently, and scolded the other 8's for wanting, behind the back of the 6's, to switch sides away from the rebels. "You guys make me sick... you pick a side and you stick! You don't cut and run when things get ugly. Otherwise you'll never have anything." And with how single-minded Cavil is, I can believe he could sway Boomer into this betrayal.

John

It's not out of character. Boomer was an undercover/double agent from the very beginning. We've never know her true motivations. She's like Loki without the wit or charm. Tyrol did something stupid for love. People do that. Tyrol has been unstable since Cally died. He's grasping as anything to find some kind of belonging. He feels cut off from everything, including his humanity after finding out he's a Cylon. Boomer was able to play on that and he felt like it was a chance to remember who he was and become who he remembered himself being again.

Ricky

My take on Boomer is that she was absolutely betrayed by her friends and family on Galactica. There was no empathy from them. Boomer had no control over her actions or what she is. Despite what she was forced to do because of a program command, she still feels the way she has always felt. Then enters Cavil, a character who believes the Cylons are more, better than humans, he believes in Boomers potential, he sees her as being capable of more. Cavil gives Boomer what Galactica crew have failed to give her. Love is a central theme to the show and with Cavil, whether or not it is manipulative or not, she feels loved with him. Even in her sort of mind palace, the theme of it was love. Galactica chose to hate her for something that was out of her control for just a single moment, so now she gives allegiance to the one individual who gives her some of what she so desperately wants.

Thontor

I get why Boomer’s choices here feel all over the place, but part of it makes more sense if you look at how isolated she’s been from basically everyone, humans and Cylons alike, since she was revealed as a sleeper. The other 8s do not really trust her and the humans definitely do not. Cavil is the one person who has consistently given her a place and he has been feeding her the idea that emotions and human connections are just weaknesses that get her hurt. She has been burned by both sides, so when she aligns with him it is as much about having any kind of security and identity as it is about ideology. It does not excuse what she does, but it at least gives some context for why she would betray the other 8s and stick with him.

Jonathan

Yeah, they definitely try to set up that the Eights as a model are afflicted with Chronic Backstabbing Disorder and Athena is the exception - presumably because of her love for Helo. Boomer is also a particularly messed up example because of what Cavil did to her by making her a sleeper agent. She had no control over what she did, but everyone she loved turned on her anyway. She ended up hated by both the humans and the Cylons, and the only person who showed her any 'kindness' was Cavil.

Jonathan

Yup. There's definitely the underlying message that things might have turned out differently if everyone on Galactica wasn't SO awful to Boomer after she shot Adama. Tigh torturing her, Tyrol emotionally devastating her, and then she gets murdered while being dragged through the corridors as her former friends literally spit on her and beat her... yeesh.
