Some people at the time did object to a woman as Captain, and a POC as a Vulcan. But as Kat says, they didn't call it woke at the time, they just moaned about it and were less coy about being racist & sexist so they didn't bother with euphemisms. Although "politically correct" may have been a term back then, I'm not sure, but it wasn't applied to TV shows the same way "woke" is now.

This is 100% true: so I just learned today that a scientist recently-ish discovered that many mammals can breath thru their anus, and that a successful human trial has been done by pumping oxygen rich fluids in there (this could have saved people with respiratory problems during Covid). I guess if this was known back when the writer(s) wrote this episode maybe Neelix wouldn't have needed holographic lungs, and the doctor could keep him breathing from the other end (if his species is capable of it)

Considering how supportive Jennifer Lien sounds giving advice, it makes her own struggles seem more poignant. Sad person with a sad life. I always hoped she would find some peace

Hang on, did the Gals skip an episode? Time and Again, I don't see it on the patreon app

iirc Jennifer lien (Kes) was 19 when this started, wth that age gap it was pretty much impossible for their relationship not to feel off imo.

Hell3Quin

Thanks, back to back reactions aren't bad either 😊

iirc, pc culture was pushed back against by some, eg pcu movie and Bill Marr show Politically Incorrect as examples. But, it was less about the subject itself than a push against people getting up on soap boxes telling other people what to do etc. Which isn't to say sexism and racism weren't in the mix, but often there were unrelated causes around people's diets, obscure environmental issues, etc people would take an off putting preachy approach to. The early perception of Janeway wasn't helped by the actor change and focus on her hair rather than the writers finding the right voice for her. I'd always felt Tovac and Kes's voices started out the strongest, Tom's took awhile imo.

Superb body horror, Trek style and the sort of WTFedness you want to see in faraway space, Michael Westmore really earned his pay for the week on this one. And also, I've always felt there was a tragic side to Neelix, like the joviality is a distraction from an inner darkness. I know the character has his detractors but dagnammit Ethan Phillips really does put his worth into the role.

In fairness though, they fixated on the hair of almost every captain up to the present era. Shatner wore a piece, they tried to get Stewart to wear a piece, made Brooks stop shaving his head, argued with Bujold about colouring her grey. It wasn't unique to Mulgrew. Also the audience at the time knew little or nothing about the behind the scenes issues. I can only speak to my experiences in the UK, but a lot of the pushback against PC was mostly bigots getting pissed off there were consequences for slurs, stuff like Robinson's Marmalade taking the golly off the label and decisions not to rerun black, brown etc face on TV. But the distinction from now, much as they complained about it, they didn't claim that more progressive TV with representation (such as it was at the time) was offensive to them and behave as if bigots are a protected class.

in the u.s. there could be a selfrighteos indignation, eg Dennis Leary's song "a... hole", but where people didn't get the joke. I can think of at least 3 of those type of talkshow hosts who litterly would blow smoke constantly and smuggly, they all ended up dieing from it.

You find that opinions on Voyager's run vary dramatically. Lots of people hate the start and love the ending, lots of people are the opposite. For me it starts a little slow, gets much better towards the second half of the second season, does great till midway through season 5 then dips and becomes pretty formulaic and then tanks in the back half of season 7... but you'll be told almost the opposite by other people. Opinions on TNG and DS9 tend to be much more uniform!

"Political correctness" was absolutely used in basically the same way in the 90s "woke" is used now, only to a lesser extent as social media wasn't a thing. As for being euphemistic, I'd argue in some ways people are more happy to be openly racist and mysogynist now than they were back then. People who were homophobic and transphobic were very open about their bigotry at the time but i don't see any improvement in that today. IMO countries like the US and UK have spent the last decade regressing culturally.

I'd love if we could keep modern-day political crap out of these comments

We all just gonna gloss over the fact that Neelix' life now depends on a lung which only has 8 remaining years of life expectancy LOL. Realizing this back in the day, may have been one of the moments I questioned whether the Voyager writers were paying enough attention...

Troy Convers

They were. The lung had been genetically altered for Neelix; one has to assume that means it's adapted for his physiology....

Travis Boyle

My vote is for both of you being newbies for watching the show. It was fun on Lower Decks

One of the things I love most about Voyager is the amount of medical based episodes they have. First the Doctor is my favorite Star Trek doctor and the fact that he's holographic, and the circumstance of Voyager being alone in the Delta Quadrant, creates the opportunity for a lot of bio-ethical dilemmas. Plus, there's new tech, new science, new anomalies, new aliens, new diseases and with all of that, there's so much medical innovation and creativity that has to happen. I got my undergraduate degree in ethics (moral philosophy) and, in my bioethics class, we each had to present an ethical dilemma for discussion from the news or pop culture or things like that and I used Star Trek Voyager scenarios for all four of mine. And they generated great debates. More than anything else, Voyager is where I credit the birth of my interest in ethics. And the Doctor and Janeway are such great actors, they really make the dilemmas hit home. Anyway, the Vidians and the Phage are such a great addition to the Star Trek Universe, I think.

Mark J

Ugh i really hate these aliens

Locoturbo

Where did they say that? I only know of the part where they are adapting his immune system, not the lung.

Troy Convers

Ethical dilemmas and shows named Star Trek go hand in hand. Voyager has a couple of the great ones.

No, bigots just have a platform where they can collectively be awful now. We probably have less or same bigots as before they are just able to be loud now. know it feels that way though.

Phenomenon (Doo - Dooo - Dah - Doo - Doo)

Doctor - "Don't worry. I'm not going to kiss you" Neelix - "I'll try to contain my disappointment" That exchange makes me laugh every time 🤣 Neelix - "Are you programmed to sing?" Robert Picardo is an accomplished operatic singer I also like that whenever anyone goes into any cave anywhere, the ground is always perfectly flat. That's some very considerate geological events happenin' there
