Yes it's a plot device, but they were just supposed to be taking a spin in the Badlands rounding up some Maquis. They weren't supposed to go stray far from the Bajoran Sector and DS9 (that also doesn't seem to have a counsellor, probably more of an issue) It wasn't a long term mission so they didn't have the full compliment they'd need for an exploratory mission. The holodeck systems have their own reactor that's incompatible with the rest of the ship, because plot. But it has occurred to me this means the EMH would be independent from main ships power so there would be some logic to having it separate, but incompatible is stupid. Unfortunately the show hired a known fraud as their Native American advisor, who wasn't actually Native American as it turned out, so Chakotay didn't exactly hit the mark on authenticity by all accounts. But the rehash of Data's dream music in the vision quest scene is nice. This is a weird hodge-podge of an episode, it has some interesting character moments, but it's not a favourite of mine.

Lintrinsic

One thing about Voyager, they have proper bedding.

Mark Chrisco

A fun bit of trivia. In NYC, DS9, still in production, was airing on channel 11 on Wednesdays at 8. Voyager began its run the same time on channel 9 at 8. So, stupidly the programs were in direct opposition which caused an uproar in this area. After a few weeks, sanity returned when DS9 moved to Saturdays at 7 while Voyager continued on Wednesdays.

Mark Chrisco

Agreed. The Intrepid Class Voyager was designed as a short term exploratory vessel. Note there's no permanent position on the bridge for a counselor. It's also possible the ship's doctor might have doubled in that capacity if needed.

Lintrinsic

It's a similar plot device to the tractor beam arrives on Tuesday. I always got the impression they deployed early because they lost contact with Tuvok. I can live with that contrivance. The holodeck power incompatibility is just daft, but then I think how the Co2 scrubbers on Apollo 13 were made by different contractors and incompatible between vehicles so it's the kind of stupid thing that can actually happen.

Hampus

The holodeck has an independent power system so it doesn't drain the ships energy reserves.

Paul McBryde

wait a minute, a ship going home back to earth, with a hologram wearing a blue uniform, and a guy who calls himself the morale officer

Stephen Wray

Tense? you can tell when he's tense, The way he scrunches up a cup and throws it in the bin. And we're not talking Styrofoam here. We're talking enamel!

Troy Convers

Yeah, the writing is haphazard in this episode; Neelix and The Doctor are probably the highlights of a bit of a borefest. Seems kinda foolish that Paris has 'Sleazy Dive 1' running while the energy reserves are burning off at an alarming rate; oh goody, another contrived holodeck angle. Hope the cleaners have the same chemicals to hand that their Enterprise counterparts used for Riker's 'programmes'. 💦 Ethan Phillips played the Doorman in the holographic club in First Contact. The Pool player is the weirdo neighbour in Friends. Dual focus shots, facial closeups (and Dutch Angles) are a trademark of David Livingston, an experienced Trek director; but even he can't polish a leaden script. And woohoo, the birth of the 'theres coffee in that nebula' meme is born. ❤️ I never touch the stuff myself (because of the dodgy ethics behind it's farming), but man alive, if there were no PG Tips (slightly less dodgy ethics ) on my stranded starship I'd be climbing the walls just like Janeway. 😂

Somewhere floating around on the Internet there is a photo of both Chris Barrie and Robert Picardo joking around at some convention in the U.K. about just this very thing.

Locoturbo

Maybe I'm being contrarian... but I really like a lot of aspects of this episode. Especially on rewatches. Not the monster-nebula plot, but how the plot drives so many fun character interactions. This is 100% a character development episode, and establishes so much. Every single main cast member had at least moderate participation if not really fundamental groundwork laid here.

Hell3Quin

OMG she actually said it! I thought it was just a meme!

Hell3Quin

There is some controversy over Chakotey's casting. I've seen him referred to online "that white guy". I feel that Neelix in this episode might have been used to address fan complaints about the premise of this series.

Hell3Quin

Maybe Doug Grant should have called his lawyer and waited to see if they said anything funny.

Hell3Quin

I definatelly missed this episode 1st time around. Neelix said everything I felt about this show back then & I didnt use it as criticism. Oh wait, I do remember Kim stating that he remembers being in the womb. Weird. Very weird. Oh this holoprogram is way better than the one that comes later. Wait, i didnt think food & drink in the holodeck was real. So its a replicator too?

Hell3Quin

Hey I use a sleep mask

Hell3Quin

That hasn't been established yet.

Lizbeth Marcs

I remember that. Production then said they had hired a consultant for the Native American cultural part aaaaand the consultant turned out to be a fraud. From our perspective in 2025 it's a real "why didn't they actually hire a Native actor." Welcome to the 1990s!

Lizbeth Marcs

I forgot that "There's coffee in that nebula!" came from Voyager, even though that line lives rent free in my head to this day. I honestly would have sworn up and down that it came from Farscape if someone had asked.

Hell3Quin

Theres a vid from a convention where he does a bit as chakotey as a latino with the other cast on stage and its supposed to be considered as funny not 😳

Lintrinsic

Yes it has. Kim talked about the independent reactor for the holdeck being incompatible with the rest of the ship in Parallax.

Hell3Quin

Oh lol, top tier show that holds up bc of the practical affects and writing. Fair enough Crichton did use a lot of topical 90's references bc he was a 90's human in a far away space. My favourite is, " Get your shoes on Harrison", bc this was something Ben Browder asked the writers to add as it was a reference to a guy in his community who when asked to do something would reply that he didnt have his shoes on so the phrase above became a refrain for 'comeone, lets go'.

Thontor

Harry said "The holodeck’s energy matrix, it just isn’t compatible with the other power systems" in VOY 1x03 "Parallax"

Thontor

the "native consultant" was exposed and documented as a fraud in the 80s but apparently Paramount didn't get the memo.

StarkRG

Or they just didn't care. Rick Berman was in charge and, at best, he's pretty oblivious when it comes to minorities.

StarkRG

Yeah, it was established but no amount of technobabble, narrative finagling, or retconning can make it make sense. If there's energy being used, there is always a way to convert that energy into another form. Simulate a few thousand Neelixes (Neelices?) running on treadmills and then run a cable out the door to a power socket. B'Elanna is an engineering genius (probably second only to Naomi Nagata), I'm sure she'd be able to rig something up.

StarkRG

It was only supposed to be a three hour tour!

StarkRG

And, eventually, curtains.

StarkRG

Wow, that's even worse than making our beloved Captain Picard an antagonist in DS9's premier. Or making the holodeck power system somehow incompatible with the rest of the ship.

Lintrinsic

I don't think that aired where I am, at least probably not in my lifetime. Edit: confirmed, it ran for a few months 6 years before I was born and was never rerun. All I know about it is from it getting mentioned in other shows and a couple of episodes I tracked down to see what the fuss was about. It was okay but I didn't keep watching. Probably not something that's to British taste it seems. But I did get the reference, that probably says something about it's cultural impact.

StarkRG

I use one with bluetooth headphones built in so I can drown out the rest of the world with calming music.

StarkRG

TNG's holodeck technology is clearly different from Voyagers because, in TNG, the holodeck actually beamed objects like rocks and plants from the arboretum which allowed Data to throw a rock at the wall in Encounter at Farpoint. Of course, the holodeck systems were upgraded at some point because, in Encounter, Data could see through the hologram to where the wall was, but in Ship In A Bottle, he couldn't. In this episode Paris says that holodeck alcohol isn't real, but in just about every other instance the holodeck (or holosuite) does use replicator technology to produce food.

Hell3Quin

That was the first type I tried but couldn't get over speaker part digging into my ear bc I sleep on my side.

Hampus

The boring out of universe explanation is that the shows writers on voyager wanted to use the holodeck as a narrative device without having the fans complain about it being unrealistic to waste the ships power when they are low on energy.

michael denny

I like how Tom's always bragging about being in prison. But he was incarcerated in New Zealand. Like them Hobbits are hard af
