Lintrinsic

I have to say it while I'm waiting to sync "Make it sew!"

Mark Chrisco

I think you'll find Janeway is more like Captain Kirk than Picard.

Lintrinsic

I don't recall her shirt getting ripped much. 😆 Personally I think she's so significantly different neither is a real comparison.

Hell3Quin

For some reason I remember the reason they couldn't get back is bc the container got messed up in transport, i think I may have conflated this with a tng episode, I have a mental image of one of those grey rocket shaped things all melted 🫠 Oops Bty the scientist is a Romulan, he won't be an old man in 20 years unless he's already an old man. Vulcans & Romulans are the same species dude! Finally, they could have gone into stasis for 20 years. Like Khan. Although I thing they were being optimistic on getting the whole crew over without an accident, which; yah know when something breaks, it does tend to break harder afterwards. Aaaaaànd they'd have to scuttle the ship. Like seriously. Destroy it all. Good episode.

Hell3Quin

I didn't know that about Ethan Phillips with Jenifer Liens character. The more I learn the more I like him and Neelix, Especially bc the other thing that comes to mind is Jessica Alba (19) & Michael Weatherly (32) in Dark Angel (2000) where he started 'dating' her, it went south and oh look sexual harrasment claims by Eliza Dushku on the set of Whatever Bull💩 that show was called.

Hell3Quin

Mark may mean that she is a gambler, something Kate Mulgrew said at the time. Kirk did occasionally show a scientific side. I dunno.

Lintrinsic

That was a TNG episode, Hollow Pursuits IIRC. Maybe he wouldn't be old in 20 years, but certainly would in 75. If they went into stasis, there would be two of everyone apart from Kes and Neelix by the time they caught up. Then if they didn't go, they'd have the same issue of it undoing everything in the Delta quadrant.

Troy Convers

A personal favourite from Early Years Voyager; the Romulan is played by Trek super guest Vaughan Armstrong, who's been in every Berman era Trek series.

Troy Convers

Temporal Prime Directive would apply. I'm surprised they didn't show up already.

Hell3Quin

Why not Neelix and Kes? Thats my point about stasis, hide until caught up. Picard ordered the crew in First Contact to abandon ship and avoid contact.

Hell3Quin

Oh fuck those guys. It doesnt make sense I hate how much of Star Trek is dedicated to something always fails as a show dedicated to time travel.

Susan K Dailey Photography

You're both still younger than me! I think Janeway is more like Kirk, but has some of Picard's qualities too.

Troy Convers

Harlan Ellison's rule in altering the timeline probably applies in this case.

Hell3Quin

Dont care, this is a show about being stranded far away from Star Fleet. I like this episode, I just wanted to point out an obvious fix that wouldn't work bc of things neither or anyone else has pointed out. 1. Romulans Ok there is no point 2.

Hell3Quin

I lie. 1. Scientist is trustworthy. 2. Ensuring stasis modules isn't. 3. Transport isn't guarentee'd by the scene that they send Romulan scientist back. So significant deaths. 4. No plan to scuttle the ship. 5. No plan to ensure the Romulans don't torture them for future technology. 6. Given its possible to remove memories in Star Trek, no plan to remove historical memories (either that the Romulans might want or aas a back up).

Vina

Such an improvement over the previous episode. Love love love the B plot with the Doctor getting some character growth, he's so charming! In the A plot, I disagree that it would be polluting the timeline if they beamed over. They could have just spent 20 years in suspended animation, and get thawed at the other end. Or literally flying at high impulse for 20 years: time dilation at speeds near the speed of light says they can spend a little over 1 day at 99.999999% the speed of light and 20 years would pass on Earth. The hard part is that it requires 1.44 * 10^28 joules of energy to get a ship of Voyager's side to that speed, BUT the warp drive can make a warp bubble around the ship to lower its inertial mass substantially. In that time they'd go only a little under 20 light years in distance, and once done they could warp back the rest of the way. Maybe the suspended animation route might be easier lol

StarkRG

It was "The Ensigns of Command", the one with the Sheliak and Data taking a shuttle to the surface to convince the colonists to leave the planet. They were using the test cylinders to figure out how to transport all the colonists through the extreme radiation, all of which came back melted. They eventually came to the conclusion that it was possible, but they'd need about 20 years of dedicated research to do it. Thankfully Picard managed to get the Sheliak to give them the time needed for a shuttle-based evacuation. And then Data blew up their brand new aqueduct because he's a dick.

StarkRG

A lot of the early Voyager ham-fisted setup was just because otherwise they didn't have a show. I don't mind most of it. The only thing about it that bugs me is the stupid idea of the holodecks having their own, independent and somehow incompatible power systems just so they could still tell holodeck stories *and* low resource stories.

StarkRG

There are four episodes in Voyager's first season that I really quite like. This is one of them (the others are Time And Again, and two that we haven't got to yet). This probably puts Voyager's first season ahead of both TNG's and DS9's first seasons, particularly given that it was so much shorter.

Redjac

I played the demo of "Star Trek: Voyager - Across the Unknown". the demo is spoiler-free, but the finished game will included many characters and plot twists from the entire series.

Lintrinsic

So if they were in suspended animation, once they got thawed how would they handle there being 2 of each person besides Neelix & Kes and them all potentially caught in a permanent loop?

Lintrinsic

That one too. O'Brien beamed a test cylinder back and forth and it was all messed up in Hollow Pursuits and I remember Geordi saying "Glad I don't have anywhere to go." It might have even been the same prop.

Jack Mingle

Star Trek Voyager is literally a Space Western Oregon Trail type of story, which is probably why I love it so much.

Troy Convers

For a ship that's stranded, they don't seem too badly off ...

Vina

It would only be an issue of awkwardness, not really anything more. They’d thaw after the other Voyager got pulled to the delta quadrant. So in that period of 20 years there’d always be two sets of the entire crew, including Neelix and Kes (Kes for only a couple years since she’s so young): one growing up or otherwise maturing on Earth and other Federation planets and destined to go to the delta quadrant for several weeks, and one in suspended animation after returning from being in the delta quadrant for several weeks. Of course there are other things Voyager would do like warn of the Borg threat Picard encounters, but maybe that’s pushing it lol

TuneIntoSanityFM

I really like the doctor's response when Kes asked him what his name was originally. His indirect answer was "I'm.. glad you came, Kes." Lonely, sensitive and discerning. Tells you more about who he is than an arbitrary name would have.

Nolan

Hol' up. You think Janeway should've lied to her crew about the letters? Did BSG teach you nothing? 🤣

Ben Chan

I had the same thought -- it would be "I know where earth is" all over again.

Ben Chan

One thing this episode does well is really exploit the "stranded far from home" premise and how it connects the whole crew in a deeply personal way with high emotional stakes. A situation like this immediately has personal repercussions for each member of the crew in a way that can't happen on other shows -- even in unintended ways, like we see with the Doctor.

Richard Finch

Voyager has the same problem as Gilligan’s Island: Hey, maybe the castaways will get rescued this week! No, then we wouldn’t have a show anymore!

Chris Devlin

Yeah the Demo was great fun. Looking forward to the full game. But the full thing is going to be chock full of Spoilers for later episodes. Which is a shame as it would be fun to see Kat tackle some of the more divisive choices the show makes.

SierraNicole

I'm late but I just am loving watching this with you. I've never seen anyone react to Voyager so this is a first for me. It's great sharing a show that means so much to me with new viewers! And also, I love seeing women who are into sci-fi meeting Janeway specifically. This show has a lot of excellent female characters but Janeway is one of the first examples of female Leadership that I was exposed to and she really is just a shining example of its strengths and power. Because the crew is small and because they're so isolated, her accessibility and vulnerability and empathy was so necessary for the crew and the writers and Kate Mulgrew did a wonderful job ensuring that there was plenty of that emotion without it compromising her responsibilities and authority. While that seems like it should be a no brainer--I have seen very few shows portray that as effectively. And I love that her strengths include listening and compromise and cooperation and the willingness to change her mind (again, without seeming wishy-washy or like a pushover). It's another strength of female leadership. Also, Kes and the Doctor bring such interesting perspectives, too. Unique to the Star Trek Universe at the time and unique to television in general, I think. There's so much growth in all the characters but, for now, them especially. The doctor's situation drives such interesting commentaries about autonomy and self-determination and how much that in itself indicates "life". Kes is so KIND and I love characters who are defined by that trait because it is such an underrated value-add. Sorry--I honestly could go on and on. I just love these characters and their story and I'm having so much fun watching you enjoy them, too!! :) Can't wait for more!

Ben Chan

It didn't occur to me until reading your description of Janeway, but (don't know if you've seen BSG) she's forced to be both Admiral Adama and Laura Roslin - sometimes switching back and forth, sometimes both at once! And Mulgrew almost never hits a false note when doing it.
