I'm not sure of the legality, but IIRC, certainly in another version when Brandon made the offer he asked if it was true that the fortune had been "irrevocably" made over to Robert. So I get the feeling it's something that the Mother couldn't undo, even if she wanted to after disinheriting Edward. I also think, much as I like this version I think it does Edward a disservice, they make it look like Col. Brandon set him up as an inept chicken farmer and I won't spoil the movie but that's not the case. I'm more than happy to validate anyone's fibromyalgia experience. I was lucky to have a doctor who had a lightbulb moment and referred me to the right specialist to get my diagnosis early. It really sucks that there are still doctors around who don't believe it's real. There may not be a test, but there's some very specific signs and symptoms. Thank you, it's great that you talk about it and raise awareness.

So the whole thing with Mrs Ferrars disinheriting Edward was different from Robert mainly because she did it out of spite. He had been raised to be a man who will 'make his mark upon the world' as they mentioned, and to marry advantageously (preferrably to Ms. Morton). So when she finds out he's enagaged to Lucy she sees it as a betrayal and an act of rebellion, thus the disinheritence. He was supposed to be the son who furthered the family's status. Robert however is the secondborn son (and her favourite). He was never expected to marry advantageously and would have always been indulged. Though she wasn't exactly happy with the marriage, it wasn't defying her or her plans for him, so no disinheritence. Its basically pure hypocrisy.

I agree with Paula's recommendations to her friend about which Austen to read next after P&P. I'd also add Persuasion as a good next option if the friend likes the ache that can be a side dish to the spooky in Gothic novels. I also wanted to recommend a PBS Masterpiece show called Miss Austen to watch either for a down the line Austen-tatious reaction or to watch in your own time. I think it does a good job showing Jane's relationship with her sister Cassandra and some of the influence that might have had on Jane's depiction of her fictional sisters.

Loved the reaction, I was tearing up along with you guys at the end! I hope you will consider watching North and South at some point its such a good series and extremely overlooked in the period drama scene.

Yes, she wasn't pleased with it, but from her point of view it was the lesser of two evils.

A lot of people use "fibromyalgia" as a code word for "give me opioids," so, right or wrong, a lot of clinicians immediately have their guard up. The evidence behind the pathophysiology of fibromyalgia is also mixed, creating a lot of skepticism in the medical community. Fibromyalgia is also a diagnosis of exclusion (several other conditions with overlapping & similarly vague symptoms have to be ruled out first). A strong clinical history is needed to justify the battery of labs and tests in order to get insurance to cover all those tests, and many patients don't want to go through it - they just want a quick answer to validate what they heard from friends or social media, and then they want a quick "fix." Nothing about diagnosing fibromyalgia is simple or quick, and there is no fix - especially because many of the symptoms overlap with other treatable conditions, like depression and anxiety. If those conditions are well treated and controlled, then there's a good chance what the patient calls "fibromyalgia" will improve. The serotonin and norepinephrine pathways possibly involved in fibromyalgia also overlap with depression and anxiety, but many patients struggle with feeling mislabled if they're given antidepressants, while clinicians don't have enough time to explain all this before going to the next room where someone is dying from heart failure or liver failure. And if you've ever met someone with true brain fog, you'd know it's much more than struggling to remember a word, which happens to everyone whether they're 8 or 80. That said, the evidence behind acupuncture (if performed by a licensed professional and not someone who will puncture a lung - as has happened with unqualified practitioners) is quite solid. We don't really know how or why it works yet, but it can reduce chronic pain perception by 30%. That's a big difference if we're bringing daily pain from 6/10 to 4/10. I wish there were more primary care clinicians and rheumatologists available, in a less mercenary money driven healthcare system, so that we could all be less pressed for time and better able to have supportive conversations with our patients. There will be some who will never be pleased just as there will always be some clinicians who will never care to try, but we can do better than this. I'm sorry for such a brusque comment, and that you've had negative experiences with clinicians. My point is to defend my colleagues who were trained in saving lives, not customer service, and to suggest they be granted some grace for being saddled with the impossible task of putting a bandaid over a broken system. I would also encourage anyone to keep an open mind about what actually ails you, rather than anchoring on a diagnosis that was suggested by family or social media. The number of young men convinced they "need" testosterone injections or young women convinced they have Ehlers-Danlos or POTS because it's trending on TikTok - only to yell at the clinic after all their tests are normal - is bonkers. Ugh, back to the fantasy land of Jane Austen.
