This was an unexpected one that I don't think I ever saw all of when I initially watched the show and since owning it I've never gotten around to. Grin's reveal caught me entirely unawares (also, I now think I know why my anime-connoisseur packmates in my former Werewolf the Apocalypse game looked at me weirdly expectantly when I named my character "Grin") . Jet is SUCH a drama queen in this episode, what was such a wild change from his cool demeanor in "Ganymede Elegy", although no more dramatic than Fae in her "oh woe is me" loneliness sob story to Grin. I think my only frustration point is I'm really looking forward to an episode where they give Ed and Ein more than a token presence. Anyway... ...see you later, Gallifreyans!

I'm not familiar with cultural attitudes in Japan, but from my limited knowledge of anime, transgender or gender fluid characters have been around a long time. The main baddie from Gatchaman would literally switch from male to female, (I don't know why as I never saw the original Japanese and of course that aspect was edited out of the U.S. version) Also Sailor Moon, to name two. I do think their attitude towards the topic isn't the same as in the U.S. - I'm sure it's better in some respects, worse in others, but it doesn't seem to be as taboo.

I don't remember a lot of lines from this show, I haven't seen it for years. But I always remembered Spike's exclamation about Vicious. It's worded in a way that hints at something so deeply inhumane, monstrous and uncontrollable that Vicious becomes a what rather than a who, and Spike is facing that hidden terror alone.
