When Paula realizes were going into Caleb back story. You can see the "Oh this is going to be rough" on her face. Also it's German like half the actors are actually German or Austrian

I would agree that Caleb has the worst backstory he is a 10/10. Though Yasha and Nott are solid 8/10 on the "That's some messed up shit" scale. Everyone else is at a max like a 5/10

This was a difficult episode to watch knowing how deep in the Sad Boi Void Liam dug when writing Caleb's backstory. I never got to the point in the campaign where the details of how he ended up getting out from under Ikithon and fell out with his thruple played out, but the basica story of being courted for the Academy and by Ikithon in particular, becoming a Volstrucker, and subsequently murdering his parents "for the Empire" was actaully revealed fairly early. (I think only shortly before or after the party arrived in Zadash). I feel it's worth noting that when Liam (as Calab) describes killing his parents, the direct allusions to being in a cult and feeling it was necessary and even being initially proud of this act of "loyalty", ostensibly to the Empire but mostly to Ikithon, honestly tells the tale a little better than the flashback we see here...but that's a personal interpretion. This episode...it was a bold choice. Personally, I think it makes it harder to empathize with Caleb as someone seeking redemption to directly see what he's seeking redemption for, but that's just me. Looking forward to the next (hopefully less emotionally assaulting) episode.

I do humbly disagree in you saying its too much, I think it did exactly what it needs to. You had to truly experience how awful Caleb was as a person and the horrible things he endured by Trent Ikithon, so people really get how different this show will be in tone and content. Yes it was awful to watch, yes it was insanely emotional, but I think it got the point across perfect this way.

Here we go, the best - and the worst - episode of Season 1. RIP Owelia, she was too hot for this world. Huge props to them doing the intro in German/Zemnian, seems like TV shows are starting to realize there are languages besides English. I did not expect Mark Strong to speak German so well but turns out he's half-Austrian. We have seen Astrid and Eadwuld before, they are the ones who stole the Beacon. So seeing them in the chariot was a huge clue that Caleb is an ex-Volstrucker.

Hey guys, thank you for another watch down. I work on the show (some of the same crew from Lower Decks is on it). Yes, this episode is a lot to take in. We all agree on that.

Rime Pendragon

I think displaying Caleb's backstory like this was tremendously effective. It makes clear exactly what he has done.

I suspected you both would struggle with this one. I thought the audio was intense enough, but with the added visuals... Setting a hell of an adult tone with this one. (Not that all cartoons have to be for kids, of course) I guess I made initial assumptions of the tone based on the YT shorts I saw. I envisaged a more overall comedic tone. Less grit, more shtick, kind of thing. Still, I loved the whole season and am dead keen for season 2. :)

Jester is a cleric, she is healing people I feel like out of hundreds of hours, every healing Jester ever did is shown in the series, it's false balancing XD And yes, this is quite the emotional heavy episode. Mighty Nein have some messed up stuff, but Caleb's backstory should be the darkest and most traumatic, that like Paula explained, was never that explicitly shown in the streams. Liam created a really f* up Character. How they did it, it really emphasizes the struggle of Caleb and his evil past. I personally thought it's fine and a great way to really understand him. Especially as I am not that much emotional invested in gruesome parts of animations. But I understand it might be too much for some. If this had been made live action, I'd be much worse. Grooming kids for evil purpose is the theme of the Christmas vacation 2025/26 XD
