A heads up for today’s reaction: We had some issues again with audio capture on our end and there are spots where it cuts out on some of our talking. We figured out what it was for future recordings, but thank you for your patience and understanding!

Oh this is exciting news I’m so happy you guys are doing more of the original series there’s so many good episodes left to do and even a few bad ones that I’d love to see you guys laughing at lol

Lintrinsic

There's a reason why critics called it The Slow Motion Picture, but in it's defense, it's not a bad movie, they just leant a little too hard on the 2001 end of the sci-fi spectrum rather than the Star Wars/Close Encounters action adventure end. Not gonna lie, was looking forward to more Voyager, but excited WoK is in the pipeline.

Aha, I've been one of those people whining about watching Wrath of Khan! Hope you get to it. The first movie isn't terrible, but if you watch the movies like you've been watching key episodes of TOS, you can skip to Khan and not really miss anything important. And to keep whining, here's hoping after ST 2 you just won't be able to skip ST 3...

Lintrinsic

Bizarrely, Warp 7 in TOS is slower than Warp 7 in TNG etc because they recalibrated the scale for nerd reasons.

Joe Concepts

In this one, the Klingon Kor's make-up may be the only time a TOS Klingon resembles the later versions. It's almost like he has the hair and the eyebrows and goatee that really look like it's everything except the forehead ridges. Unfortunately, most later ones do NOT look as good.

Joe Concepts

2, 3, and 4 is a nice Trek trilogy.

LonghillAndy

Paula: Sometimes you’re right Also Paula: we’re skipping the motion picture and you all know why! Us: Sometimes Paula you’re right 😂

Troy Convers

No, you're wrong. TMP is a fabulous film and I will hear no slander on its good name. Its proper Sci-fi Trek, with heart, and you're missing one of the great Nimoy performances.

Just seeing the gang reuniting is cause enough to watch it. Anyone saying 'hurdur motionlessness picture' has the attention span of a walnut.

Travis Boyle

I agree. Director's Edition is awesome

Troy Convers

What's wrong with that? And Star Wars isn't even Sci-Fi. It's Space Opera.

Lintrinsic

Kat might be thinking of the justice field in the Red Dwarf episode Justice.

Travis Boyle

John Colicos is great. He also played Baltar on the Original Battlestar Galactica. Maybe a future show to react too. He is a Canadian so he got a Star Trek postage stamp when they honored Star Trek. Along with William Shatner and James Doohan. I bought some of them.

Mike Connaghan

I choose to believe that the audio cut-outs were Kat redacting spoilers for Kat.

Joe Concepts

I never thought it was a terrible movie. It's just very slow. I don't need big action packed battle scenes, but to me -- as I'm sure you heard many times before -- it just feels like an expanded episode. It was a fine way to start the movies, and definitely matches the kind of plot one of the more thoughtful episodes have. And of course, it was a popular enough return to give us the movies and everything else that followed. I may also be biased cuz I first saw it as a kid and just remembered how slow and gray it all was.

Joe Concepts

Yes one problem with this one is, why DIDN'T they just explain themselves? Maybe there's some reason in a deleted scene for why they wanted to hide who they really are.

Joe Concepts

For fun, maybe Spock's Brain is next? But beyond that The Enterprise Incident or Let That Be Your Last Battlefield?

Alex Skyrahfall

Will you watch „Space Seed“ before Wrath of Kahn?

Robert Gendron

Star Trek: The Motion Picture is worth watching, but a reaction would be pointless. Do a reaction to the entire movie, and the edit would be about five minutes long without missing any reaction or commentary.

Hell3Quin

I'm so happy Kat got to watch this episode. For, reasons...

Hell3Quin

The klingons where I believe supposed to be Chinese communism archetype while Romulans were Russian archtypes. Kor described how all klingons are in lockstep & under constant surveillance including Kor just before the other klingons burst in. Very not the klingons we know now.

Hell3Quin

Btw at first I saw Kat's heart makeup and thought they were directly on the lens of her glasses, 'oh thats cute' then I realised 😊

Edward A Kerr

I'll guess that it's The Enterprise Incident.

Ben Chan

They've already seen Space Seed

Ben Chan

Just as many people speculated that Trelaine was a Q, I'm thinking maybe the Organians were the Douwd, like from TNG's "The Survivors" where that old guy was revealed at the end to have killed an entire species in retaliation for the death of his wife. (I don't recall if Kevin said anything about the Douwd that contradicts my theory, but I'm sticking to it until proven otherwise!)

Time Lord

You know what... Yes. Absolutely.

timdoesphoto

In terms of tone, TOS feels a lot closer to Star Wars than 2001. Following the original series, TMP feels too cold and humorless. It was an interesting attempt to evoke 2001, but I don’t think they succeeded at that.

Ben Chan

Also, Kevin fits right in with the Organian Council -- old white dude.

Locoturbo

...nah. The Organians here stated that being around "us" lower life was immensely painful to them. I doubt any would want to take a human partner and live in a colony of mortals. And while there are certainly similarities between the two, their forms do not appear similar at all (the Organians depicted here as creatures of blinding light, while the douwd was a creature of shadow.) Lastly, the Organians disabled 2 star fleets. Kevin/douwd said he used tricks and subterfuge against the Husnock, but eventually was unable to stop their assault. Yet was somehow able kill them all in an uncontrolled fit of rage. Again, just not quite the same.

Locoturbo

Because of the audio problems, I wasn't quite sure what TOS movies you plan to skip. But I'd suggest not skipping 3. All I can say. Although on second thought you may also not want to skip 5, for completely different reasons.

Firefly24601

Kat is probably watching III on their own time. And they are both skipping V entirely.

MARK F JENKINS

I have come to appreciate TMP more over the years. Although its plot is too derivative of a particular TOS episode that I don't think Kat and Paula have watched, it took a definite and deliberate turn away from Star Wars, which had come out a couple of years before; in fact, the pacing of several sequences seem to me to be trying to evoke Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey (though perhaps less successfully). It wasn't a stellar success, but I think it's been dumped on to an unfair extent. Plus, if you know your TNG, you can spot the beginnings of several ideas that the later show continued.

Firefly24601

"...as we boldly watch what no Kat (and Paula sometimes) has watched before."

Alex Skyrahfall

Thank you for the link. Will watch it tonight, looking forward to their take on the episode🖖🏼

Troy Convers

A shame, because V, for all of its many, many, MANY faults, has a lot of character building of the main three. Yes, you think they'd be nothing to add to the mythos of Kirk, Spock and McCoy, but it's the one thing that this film does right. And one line uttered by Kirk that has me crying every time, given what happens in Generations.

Troy Convers

Romulans, as the name implies, are very heavily based on ancient Rome. Klingons are initially meant to be Mongolian, then by the time the films come around, lean heavily into feudal Japan warriors like Shogun and Samurai, with honour being everything and disgracing that honour being the ultimate crime.

Troy Convers

Why? Many reactors have watched TMP and loved it.

TuneIntoSanityFM

Red Dwarf: Justice has a violence denying environment, any chance that was it?

Ben Chan

Thanks for bringing up all the details of "The Survivors" that I had forgotten, but nothing you mention can't be explained away: 1 - "Kevin" obviously can feel differently than the others about lower life-forms, so that doesn't disprove anything 2 - The Douwd and Organians can clearly look like whatever they want - there's nothing to say either bright light or shadowy creature are their true forms anyway. Those forms could've been informed by their state of mind at the time or ... anything, really. 3 - This might actually help my theory. Kevin used tricks because - like the Organians - he didn't want to resort to violence. Even the "hot guns/ hot control panels" thing might've been too violent for him, so he resorted to tricks though he obviously failed. He clearly had enough power to stop them directly, but chose not to. -- Anyway, this is all in good fun and I doubt there will ever be a follow-up, but in Trek, y'never know! 😁

Darren Rahaman

When it came out it was amazing, a Star Trek film, on the big screen. Though as a 7 year old i had no idea what was going on

tal goren

it actually was just an extended episode, since the script was originally written to be the pilot of the sequel tv series
