Love that you're doing this show! I agree the gender based insults are jarring, as you say partly a cultural difference with the C-word, but in this case I think that and the workplace harassment the journalist talks about is intended to comment on the real misogynist culture of British politics, even to this day there's sadly scandals about how politicians and their aides have talked about women and other minorities in government. These days it's usually government WhatsApp leaks, but this stuff has been an issue forever. It's an extremely cynical show that had something serious to say - but it is hilarious as well! Strange combo but imo it works!

If you ever need a Capaldi Unicorn chaser, look up on Youtube '1984: "The Glasgow Style" with Peter Capaldi', for a young Capaldi and amazingly 80s styles

in 2009 I went to London for the first time in the fall. After doing what I consider a vacation, crisscrossing a large city on foot and subway for 10 hours, I got off my feet by sitting down on the edge of the hotel bed and turned on the TV. I unintentionally landed on series 3 episode 1's debut and was smitten by this Tasmanian Devil of glorious verbal knives and have loved it since. Once they put the collection on DVD I got it.

FWIW for cultural context the "C" word regularly tops polls of the worst swear words; but I'm fairly sure it'd top a hypothetical poll of people's favourite too. What's maybe different, culturally, is as a swear word it's completely separated from the body part - it can still mean that for sure, but as an insult it's completely lost connectivity with that meaning and is un-gendered in meaning and use (though to be fair I'm not sure that it was when this was made). We also pronounce it differently to people in the US (more aggressively really) - though in recent years I've noticed the pronunciation you hear in the UK carrying a little bit more transatlantic, presumably because of the popularity of some shows.

You may already know this, but there's a big difference between Glenn and Olly and Terri. Glenn and Olly are part of the government, they are advisors to Hugh and if he gets fired they go with him. Their first priority is to make Hugh and the government look good. Terri belongs to the department, she's a civil servant and so is under obligation to be 'non-political'. She stays with the department regardless of who leads it or even if the government changes, so she couldn't care less about how Hugh looks or their political troubles. It comes up more in later episodes, but it goes a long way to explain the different attitudes to crisis and how antagonistic they can be to each other. Loved the reaction btw, Holy Hell Peter Capaldi is intimidating when he wants to be...

Don't worry, plenty of Men get called a cunt by Malcolm.

Perfect. In time, we'll manage to make you ready for Yes, Minister, and your journey to the British side will be complete. 😈

It'll come up more in later series as well, when the writers realised that Malcolm had become the main character rather than Hugh and his entourage, and they had to expand the character roster to include some proper opposition for him. At that stage, they also started exploring differing variations of the same horribleness and made a clear distinction between his being awful to everyone with spectacular and personalised precision (if a gendered insult would work on someone of a specific gender, he'd use it; if insulting someone's intelligence would cut hard, he'd use that instead) and their more prejudiced (or other kind of) awfulness. So you end up seeing other characters who'd be specifically misogynistic or who'd clearly try to mimic Malcolms swearing, but without the flair and purpose. And then there's the few who are just as horrible, but lack the ability to clearly communicate it, which creates a comedy of its own.

the american remake, veep, is also really good.

I love that you're doing this series. I think its use of language is glorious (especially the almost poetic swearing from later episodes). It contributed the word 'Omnishambles' to the English language, which then came to be used to describe a real moment with the British government. It is also known to be very well researched and an exaggerated version of the truth - people in government at the time were this horrible and this incompetent.

I never finished Veep, but what I watched of it was SO good. I didn't realize it was inspired from this show, but knowing that now it makes SO much sense!! - Kat
