If not here, the Opposition Extra episode is worth wedging in between Series 3 and 4 because of how the show changes between those series.

Mark Ten

The only person qualified to be the PM is the cleaner!

Rime Pendragon

Oh, I could watch a whole evening of this! It's so much fun!

Rime Pendragon

Are you going to watch Veep ? The politics of that show may be more accessible to you.

Jason

As someone who is just paying for the individual episodes on here will the 15min Opposition Extra special be seperate or bundled in with the start of series 3?

Peter Harrison

Firstly, thanks to Paula for opening up at the end there. It did look like you were about to cry when Glenn loses it. Secondly, I haven't watched this in ages so when the line about the unsubstantiated rumours about Huw Edwards came up I (now) wonder if the writers did actually know something but couldn't say it at the time. Lastly, I love how Julius and Glenn are listening to TMS (Test Match Special) so they can hear the last test from Sydney for the Ashes. It would be at that time of year at that time of night in the UK - and I did hear both Aggers (English commentator) and Jim Maxwell (Australian commentator) on the radio. There's some attention to detail from the SFX people!

Wow I didn't actually want to watch this, I've avoided it and voted for Blakes 7. But this is my favourite episode! What a roller coaster. Shout out to well rested Tony Gardner, My Parents are Aliens is great. Oh and no, no poor Jennifer. She works for the daily mail, thats literally the newspaper equivalent of writing the SS Auschwitz fan club newsletter. Don't believe me? Google daily mail & hitler, then look up some d mail front pages about Muslims/immigrants. Her plague pit actually has more stochastic terrorism in it than any of these other characters combined. And thats saying something.

Sloane Lysbeth

it actually says so much about ollie that he was in a relationship with her and... emma. why is he always with these extremely right wing partners?

Sloane Lysbeth

malcom's gloating at the end when he realises he isn't being dumped on the scrap heap is shameless.

Hell3Quin

Well, probably bc his current position is more out of convenience?

Karl Ward

There's a thing that happens when you get older, maybe just men, I'm not sure. But you gradually become invisible and start feeling irrelevant, people stop listening and simply dismiss you. Its actually quite poignant.

Jonathan

100%. Ollie is posh, he goes out with posh women. It's quite likely the only reason he's in the Labour party is because they were the party in power and power is what he wanted. There are a LOT of people like that in the real life party.

Jonathan

I love that you get little flashes from Malcolm and Jamie that they actually have a bit of respect for ordinary people like the cleaners, when they clearly have none for anybody in politics. The absolute standout though is how little running the country factors into politics. They literally swap out the position of most powerful person in the UK five times in 12 hours purely depending on who'd play well with the press and who'd be good for them personally.

capikon

The suggestion is that Malcolm and Jamie both grew up in deeply economically deprived, dangerous "working-class" neighbourhoods in Scottish cities in the 70s and 80s, which makes their scheming and use of violence necessary survivalistic behaviour. Those qualities, combined with their intelligence, also make them extremely useful in the environment of the behind-the-scenes political atmosphere of this time, but they each remain true to their roots to a meaningful degree from the way they demonstrate the genuine class solidarity that they've been imbued with as a result of that upbringing. Contrast this with Ben Swain's behaviour, in spite of him being an elected representative of a supposedly 'labour'-orientated party.

Jonathan

It's also interesting that Malcolm, while he clearly thinks Ollie is more useful, has a bit of a soft spot for Glen. Or at least he views loyalty as a positive thing even if he displays absolutely none himself.

Laura Murray

I'm from the same part of Scotland Malcolm is later mentioned to be from, and those little bits are always my favourite. It's the few times that Jamie and Malcolm show humanity and compassion, and you can see why they're so angry at politicians etc, since they probably went into politics to try and change things, and have ended up corrupt and shells of themselves. So I love the little moments where they have casual chats with each other, and regular people, compared to how the politicians treat them etc. You never see them having a cup of tea, or chatting meaningless shite with anyone else. I also love how Malcolm clearly respects Glen, and his loyalty to the party. For all his toxicity, I like that they show nuance, so then the toxicity and villainous behaviour makes more sense, and while still sometimes deplorable, is not just there for no reason. And even justified in some cases. While still being an entertaining, horrifying character at times.

Lintrinsic

Iannucci has said he had no idea, and picked Huw Edwards for the joke because he appeared to be squeaky clean at the time. Same with another name drop I think comes up later in the show.

Jonathan

I feel like it's why Malcolm looks so worried when the cleaner starts saying "people should know" and "I bet people would like to hear this". If she actually decides to go to the papers and try and sell the story of Ben being rude to her she suddenly enters their world, and she becomes fair game. Just like the actress in the previous season. He's got some sympathy for ordinary people but once they enter politics voluntarily it evaporates.

Jonathan

Thick of it, Blackadder and I'm pretty sure Red Dwarf at one point. British comedy try not to make Paula cry challenge.
