Is it even a Jonathan Frakes video without getting weird?! 😂

I love this episode and the idea of a robot civil war between identical units carrying on their flawed master's behaviours. The Orville built on the idea of a faceless android with Isaac and the Kaylon who were equally scary looking; and just like here the main actor playing Isaac is basically cocooned in the outfit. Also, recognise the voice of 3947? The great Rick Worthy, aka Cylon Number Four/Simon. He has a niche for playing duplicates!

*looks ahead in the Voyager episode list* Excellent! the "Emmy Award Winning" episode, is a couple more away. That one should be interesting. Actually there are a lot of pretty good episodes all in a row in this season. In fact looking closer, most of the "Voyager's deepest cuts" in the Lower Decks season 4 opener, all come from this season. S02E15, S02E23, and S02E24, especially.

I don't understand how the Prime Directive even prevented Janeway from wanting to help them. If they didn't want to interfere with their "culture," then what was she thinking allowing the crew to take the robot on board and activate it in the first place? Was she planning to destroy it after they'd studied it? I also didn't think the Prime Directive prevents Starfleet from helping ANYONE, just people that otherwise wouldn't have discovered on their own the realities of a multi-species community out in space. Since the robots clearly were aware of interstellar travel, Janeway was seemingly refusing to help another people for no reason. If Prime Directive was so concretely about not changing the course of every species, then they literally would never come to the aid of anyone.

Jack Mingle

Prime Directive is generally for Life-forms and Cultures, not technology. I mean it is shown in TNG that investigating ancient Tech is quite common (also in TOS) Robots generally aren't considered life-forms in Trek, Data is the exception to the rule, even made an episode about him. Plus Janeway is notoriously similar to Kirk in that regard.

WastedPo

But if it was a matter of them being just "technology," then why did Janeway specifically cite the Prime Directive as the reason they couldn't help them? They even used the word "culture" in this show in reference to the robots.

Troy Convers

The robots were very reminiscent of the Maschinenmensch from Metropolis, which was a huge inspiration for C3PO.

Nolan

Sometimes that Prime Directive is necessary y'all.

Nolan

It's a spectrum. They saved a life form in danger. But helping them procreate is an internal matter, and, as it turned out, they lacked the cotext that these were genocidal war machines. THAT is what the PD is supposed to prevent - rushing in to help without necessary context and shifting the power structures. I think a lot of the PD is response to colonial behaviours of our past, preventing such mistakes that were made with indigenous populations in the Americas, the Middle East, etc, etc.

Locoturbo

Seems a spoiler to tell them what's coming up even if it's not concrete

Locoturbo

"Gosh I wish that they could break their programming cause then they could learn to like, become their own entity" yep. I wish that for people too

Stop rooting around in interstellar trash, nothing good ever comes of it!

Ben Chan

We didn't get to see that scene, but if the episode had started on the bridge you know Janeway beamed that thing on board on the off-chance it was a coffee maker.

There was also a very similar NextGen episode with auto-improving/adaptive technology. Iirc, there was the same ending with the tech having destroyed everyone. I do like how in this episode Belona's character shows more depth than Angry Klingon and Mcguffin Solution Provider, I enjoyed her conversation with Janeway at the end.

Please do not tease or set expectations for future episodes. They've burned the Pals more than once.
