ME: Hey! I wonder what episode the Pals are gonna be watching today? [clicks on Patreon link] ME: Oh! Oooohhhhh deeaaaahr.... As a pallet cleanser, let me offer you something you didn't know you needed in your life: a Voyager/Fraiser cross-over. It was supposed to be a salute to Star Trek featuring the entire Fraiser cast, but Kelsey Grammar was in a car accident and couldn't do the sketch. Kate Mulgrew steps in to save the day as Janeway! Seriously, you need this after suffering through Threshold: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8qxD2eoh-W4&t=46s

Me: "yey! Another reaction is out...Oh no. Threshold. I can't do it. See you next week"

Colin 3of5

Ohhhhh dear dear "don't panic"

Travis Boyle

I guess a homage to Cronenberg's remake of The Fly with Jeff Goldblum. Threshold did win an Emmy for makeup. I guess the funniest thing is Playmates put out a mutant Tom Paris action figure that came with 3 salamander babies he had with Janeway. LOL.

Brian Duncan

The infamous Threshold. This should be fun.

Troy Convers

I'm going to be objective with this episode. Fantastic premise, a person goes to warp 10 and the effects mutate him. The makeup, the body horror could have had this episode as an all time classic. The execution. Oh dear fucking god. Writer Michael De Luca had a good record for horror (Freddy's Nightmares TV series, Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III, Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare) and he went on to be a Hollywood bigwig. This though...ahhh. I suspect the ending was tweaked by one of the producers; well that's my theory. I would have loved to have seen a different ending where Paris stays half and half mutated and maybe has some 'warp sense' where he can manipulate subspace. Sounds daft maybe, but it's still better than what we got. Hooo boy, an episode to stick in the bottom drawer along with Sub Rosa and Spock's Brain.

Firefly24601

YAYYYY another Galli-- oh. ohhh noooo.....

Makhiel

I'm surprised you didn't recognize the name, clearly "Threshold" doesn't enjoy adequate levels of infamy. :) And don't worry about the evolution part, it's not how it works and nothing about it makes any sense.

Data Cable

Congrats, Pals! You've survived what is widely regarded the worst ep of the series! Among its many sins, it continues Trek's long-running misrepresentation of evolution as a pre-determined sequence of developmental stages, rather than the change in frequency of gene variations across a population in response to environmental pressures.

Jack Mingle

GOATed episode. THRESHOLD! TAKE US TO THE THRESHOLD! lol

Jack Mingle

maybe that is the genomic response to warp 10, sort of the like "Human Designed to survive Car Crashes" meme. problem with trying to put IRL science into star trek is you realize somethings start to edge closer to Magic and further from Science. (Q)

Stephen Wray

We saw the Salamanders on the Lower Decks Voyager episode

Jack Mingle

nothing about warp 10 makes any sense, same with Q

Chris James

I think the first half hour is great. The last act is just silly, they fumbled that. But when people say 'worst episode ever', my thinking is more 'worst 10 minutes' maybe. Most of the episode is very enjoyable to me.

Siva

So I guess the whole Voyager crew are now guilty of child abandonment?

Troy Convers

Oh I'm sure that the warp evolved humans won't come back looking for revenge one day ...

JD Robertson

Oh, I forgot that this mess happened so early in the series.

Locoturbo

I wanted to hint about this episode in advance, but decided to hold my tongue

Darren Rahaman

Voyager really doesn't get going until 7

xeve

I didn't listen to this particular one myself, but the actors who played Tom and Harry watched/reviewed all of Voyager. The answer coud be mentioned there.

xeve

I'd say if one was going to dig into the end (and I don't suggest it), there's nothing to indicate the method of reproduction stayed consistent with how humans reproduce. They could've each layed eggs and fertilized each others eggs, or it could've been axsexual/budding, or they could've had a starfish like quality and grew into many little Toms and Janeways after 4 days of battling each other and tearing each other to pieces.

TuneIntoSanityFM

"Join us next time as we Cross the threshold (As diminished responsibility salamanders)"?

Ben Chan

Tom turned into a salamander and having salamander babies with Janeway --> "I guess I shouldn't feel burdened by internalized expectations." -- *That's* the takeaway?? Minus the bizarre "Tom kidnaps Janeway to have salamander babies" tangent, this could have just been a really good Tom episode. But we're left with Tom's growth moment completely overshadowed by the audience still reeling from the insanity we had just witnessed. (at least Janeway got some ...??)

WastedPo

This episode was absolutely bonkers. It started off so well. And even when he started transforming, it was still pretty good. But when they made Robert MacNeill put that thing in his mouth to inhibit his speech, and he started lashing out at Janeway, it made me think that they took two half-written plots and tried to combine them somehow. Or the writers were trying to sabotage the actors. Thirty minutes in, and it felt so crazy that I would've been fine with them saying at the end that it had just been a dream. I know that the TNG episode "Genesis" had the crew mutating into creatures, but that somehow felt less insane, maybe because there was a clear structure to that story. Threshold is one of those episodes that you have to make yourself forget happened so you can continue to be invested in the show the next week.

Ben Chan

I honestly think they just didn't know how to increase the drama given the situation. So they had to fill up time before the ending where Tom has his growth moment with something with high stakes and sci-fi.

Troy Convers

The next episode is as underrated as this one is notorious, and the two after that are bangers. Y'all in for a treat.

Travis Boyle

It almost feels like it should have been a Gary Mitchell/Nth Degree Barclay situation instead of a monster transformation. Although obviously that story had been done before so that would have just been a rehash.

Alex Bennett

This episode wasn’t liked by the people who made it. It’s amazing how much they messed up her.

tal goren

Tom was also holding his tongue. sorry...
