So this episode feels like it was something a writer had in their back pocket bc the premise breaks any idea I have that they are so far away. Its some idea a writer had in his back pocket and they didn't care how scene breaking it was. Same with all their uniforms being freshly starched.

The missile can reach warp 9? It doesnt need a warhead at that point. The writers really didn't care about this episode did they.

Tuvok: Perhaps we should use photon topedos. Janeway: What are those?

Troy Convers

How so? Dreadnought was probably another Caretaker stray.

Another in the midseason run of bangers; needed another few minutes at the end but Levar's direction and camera angle choice make up for it. And no cut and dried B-plot to make up the weight either, instead we're getting more of the Voyager Mole and now Paris going off the rails. And next week's episode? Oh my, I've got the vapours.

Interesting that the Pals associate Miles with Harry, as something *very* similar will happen to both of them in upcoming eps. Shutting up about that for now. The non-humanness of Ens. Wildman's husband is revealed, possibly explaining the unusually long gestation period of her child.

Troy Convers

Probably too late, but if you haven't watched the next episode yet, cover the post-opening credits as there's massive spoilers.

I’d argue this episode does a good job of predicting modern AI. Performatively polite. Able to plan but with no real concept of what the plan means in real terms. Will cheerfully go off the rails if left unmonitored.

Love this episode. The disparity between the good and bad of Voyager S2 is extreme. Dawson does a hell of a job in all aspects, and everyone else is great too. Also love the Dreadnought set and all of the visual and audio effects.

Warp uses a distortion of spacetime. The object at warp doesn't carry some unimaginable amount of kinetic energy - it couldn't. A warp 9 ship hitting a planet would certainly do a lot of damage, but nothing compared with the antimatter detonation described here.

There can be some Lost in Space/Gilligan's Island plot obsurdity (sp?), w/o the commedic intent to Voyager writing. This episode shows enough character I personally don't mind it, but I can see where it hits a nerve. For example, the Caretaker was relatively benevolent, and yet allows a super weapon to just roam around? He also was looking for DNA and wouldn't have targeted it in the firstplace.

While I liked the episode in general it does seem to hit the same notes as the robot episode. Both had B'elana messing around with other species weapons and facing extreme consequences. She's also stuck on her own to fix it. I kinda wish they'd been a little more distinct from the other episode.

Ben Chan

In all fairness, as the Pals recognized, the episode was a play on the Hal 9000 from 2001: A Space Odyssey. (although I'm sure there were precursors to that as well in science fiction)

The main plot of the episode was pretty good, but there were a few things introduced here that I wished they had time to wrap up better: -- Some kind of followup between Chakotay and B'Elanna knowing that she broke his trust back then and now he lied for her sake in the briefing. The resurfaced guilt was part of the reason seeing the Dreadnought again affected her, so it would've been nice to see Chakotay get to reassure her.(and even remind us of her feelings towards him) -- Speaking of B'Elanna's guilt, if she felt guilty at the beginning of the ep I don't think stopping the missile would just negate her feeling responsible for the deaths of those pilots. I feel the story needed a line or two to indicate how she's coping with that guilt after it's over, even if it's just to acknowledge that she'll have to live with it. -- The Tom acting out stuff. I suppose his respect for Janeway and thanking her was meant to be the button for that, but it didn't quite feel like a satisfying conclusion. But then, maybe it wasn't, as Tom's behavior had been building - so guess we'll see if we're done with that.

When B'Elanna returned to Dreadnaught, why not bween an explosive charge to destroy the missle from inside? I really would have liked an upbeat coda where Voyager's crew was invited to the planet as friends.
