For suggestions, have you watched Spaced ?

After this, you could go *really* old school and do Yes (Prime) Minister — where this whole political mockumentary thing started, making fun of the inner workings of government with a very different style of cynicism. For the connoisseur, there is also A New Statesman, which is *good* but requires a bit of warming up in how mean it is. In a way, it paved the way for characters such as Malcolm. Vicar of Dibley and Absolutely Fabulous are also good as general British culture touchstones, but given your reaction to the characters in this series, I wold maybe suggest something like Black Books (3x6 episodes) or maybe something where you'll love the actors and characters from the get-go, like Jeeves and Wooster. Fawlty Towers is probably a better option as a classic too, but it will always stand in contrast to Monty Python, and the problem with both is that they haven't really aged well. Python in particular is *very much* of its time, even if it shaped all of comedy for the next 50 years. …and if you want to completely change genre and topic, there is the all-time (but rare, so it might be very difficult to find) Edge of Darkness — a six-episode political-triller miniseries that remains second to none. Or, hell, let's get *properly weird* and try The Prisoner (1967). If you can manage that one, you have definitely graduated as far as unique reactions go. 😈

I, Claudius would probably be up your street

On a more episode-related note, I kind of find it cute to watch the full arc of Glen and Terry, going back to series one, where they were sort of actually good at their job but were constantly ground down by the political wants and needs of everyone they worked for, to this point where they have this final career-suicide pact… that just like everything else they try fail spectacularly because of everyone they work for.

You really need to see Yes, Minister and Yes, Prime Minister. Both are anazing shoes and The Thick of It takes a lot from them. It is truly one of the best sitcoms ever made.

Robbie Moore

Yes minister would be unreal. very clever and a lot less toxic than the thick of it but still incredibly funny.

vaughn DeGeer

Spaced, the detectorists, taskmaster, last one laughing uk, the cleaner.

Loved this! As a Shropshire resident, I love staff writer Jesse Armstrong's little references to his home county (Terri's tea shop in Ludlow). In terms of British shows: Green Wing (surreal hospital-set sitcom where you can watch Michelle Gomez play a post-watershed Missy), Casanova (David Tennant's post-watershed try-out for The Doctor, written by RTD, Girl in the Fireplace vibes), Last Tango in Halifax (romcom [and so much more] about two people who reconnect in their twilight years and their dysfunctional daughters, so much Doctor Who alumni/future cast).

Sebastian Bodine

Mannion kills me every time with that "I think I just took a picture of my feet" line. Yes, please do follow this up with In The Loop then Yes, Minister. You might still come away with "Why does anyone go into politics?", but you'll still love the primary antagonist, especially his way with words.

Hell3Quin

Oh I only clocked at the end that Rhohinka is played by Mandeep Dhillion, she's very, very good. Some Girls is excellent and she was one of the 3 Cat monks in Red Dwarf The Promised Land.

JD Robertson

Spaced is very fun. Staged is a brilliant lockdown comedy and has David Tennant. If you want something a bit more dramatic, try The Detectorists. Alternatively, there’s always classic Sci Fi like The Prisoner or Blake’s 7.

Jonathan

Underrated joke - Stewart telling everyone to go to the "Zee drive" instead of the "Zed drive", another in his series of annoying Americanisms XD

Dean Madden

Is Fawlty Towers an option?! Hell yeah, that gets my vote. That and I'll add vote for I, Claudius, it does include an early performance from a channel legend

As a direct poltical comedy replacement I'd back the others suggesting Yes Minster/Prime Minister. Its different enough (and obviously funny enough) from The Thick Of It that I think you'd both really enjoy it. Plus it is better at explaining the British political machine as various bits of it are encountered. As a general British show recommendation I'd go with Sharpe. Napoleon War action staring Sean Bean and veritable who's who of British actors from the time.
