Grace Whitney (Janice Rand) was in 8 episode of TOS, The motion picture, Search for Spock, Voyager Home & Undiscovered country.

I've said it before and I'll keep saying it until the day I croak - why on Earth this wasn't a backdoor pilot for a Sulu series is one of the greatest missed opportunities in Trek history, if not TV history. We get a TOS show, we continue the story after TUC and we get George Takei chewing pieces of the Excelsior bridge on a weekly basis. Takei can more than hold his own in the centre seat; its crazy to think how much Sulu has grown from a lowly Helmsman with a few choice moments in TOS to a fully fleshed out character who's learned under the best. Incidentally, check out the Star Trek: New Voyages fan series episode 'World Enough and Time' ; Takei guests starts and its a great story that will have you in tears.

Adam Morgan

This episode was written to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Star Trek in 1996, which is why they're being so nostalgic about it in the dialogue. (As it happens, this year is the 60th Anniversary of Star Trek, so it is also the 30th Anniversary of this episode.)

Travis Boyle

It was to celebrate the 30th Anniversary. DS9 had a TOS inspired episode that week as well. They basically covered every show for the 30th Anniversary. TOS on DS9, TOS movies on Voyager, and TNG with the First Contact film. And this year is the 60th Anniversary. The ending was a little meh but overall liked the episode. Seeing Kang again was great.

Travis Boyle

And have Kang, Kor, and Koloth as reoccurring villians

Troy Convers

I love that she gets her redemption after the disgraceful way she was fired from TOS; Rand rising to First Officer of a starship from being a yeoman approx. 20 years earlier (in-world time) is very satisfying.

Stephen Wray

30th Anniversary episode, the DS9 also did one which is one of my top episodes

Vina

The older actress is Grace Lee Whitney who played "Janice Rand" - she was only in a few episodes of TOS but they were mostly very memorable episodes, and some of the TOS movies (but not named as Rand, just "Transporter Tech", "Communications Officer" etc. Her beehive hairdo on TOS was also very memorable lol

Hell3Quin

Yeh I literally couldn't remember the mcguffin despite seeing this ep several times and liking it overall. Sulu's reveal shot was choice 👍

Hell3Quin

Maybe Kes has chemistry with all the other characters bc Neelix is the only one she isn't attracted to 😋

Makhiel

I have somehow totally repressed this episode in my memory, probably because I had no idea who the people in the flashback were back when I saw it.

xeve

He's the only one her character is in a romantic relationship wih (Tom's feelings are unrequited), and the more Kes and Neelix are written as friends the better they are to watch. I don't want to say much more to avoid spoilers.

Hell3Quin

Not really what I was getting at.

rocketdave

lol, I assume that back in the '60s, Grace Lee Whitney was not hired for her acting ability. I consider "Flashback" to be a disappointment. They got back George Takei and this is the best the writers could come up with? Rather than rehashing the events of Star Trek 6, they could have done an original adventure, perhaps one in which something the Excelsior encounters in the 23rd century has made its way to the Delta Quadrant by Voyager's time. DS9's 30th anniversary episode, on the other hand, is a classic in its own right.

Troy Convers

That sounds...derivative. And also, they then couldn't mention Kirk, Spock & McCoy.

Mark Chrisco

30th anniversary. DS9 also did their own tribute. Fun note. The Voyager writers congratulated the DS9 crew for producing the superior anniversary episode, which you will eventually see for yourself.

seven tessipates

she was treated so very poorly her firing caused her to dive into a substance abuse problem. her appearance in The Motion Picture as the transporter operator was the first step in repairing what the early show production had done to her career

seven tessipates

also her "wooden acting" could have been a note from the VOY showrunners, she's never that wooden in her previous Rand appearances

Locoturbo

The director was the same director for everyone else on set. Just saying.

Locoturbo

Tribute nostalgia via contrivance. Not bad, not great. Would have been a better contrivance had Tim Russ actually been in the legacy TOS event referenced here.

Siva

This episode was okay. I think they should have either made it a pure tribute episode or made it more of a Tuvok episode. Mashing the two together didn't work well for me. Nice seeing Captain Sulu though.

JD Robertson

One of my favorite episodes, but it does rather assume you’ve seen Star Trek VI to fully appreciate all the references.

Locoturbo

Well, anything that theoretically made its way to the delta quadrant (I won't spoil anything cause I forgot what movies they've seen) likely wouldn't have living OG cast members. So there's not much nostalgia bite for the anniversary. While I'm not crazy about the episode, it was a somewhat clever way to connect them to TOS era alpha quadrant and even "interact" with it, without some crazy anomaly / time travel, so I give them credit for that.

Ben Chan

Are you implying she's a bad actress because she couldn't act like she was attracted to someone she wasn't irl?

Ben Chan

The problem with "an original adventure" is that it would have taken way too long to set up and resolve when the episode isn't about that. The fact that we could still see Captain Sulu in these exciting situations without needing to set up or resolve them was pretty cool. And for those who didn't get it, they could just focus on Tuvok as the rest wasn't really relevant aside from Dmitri's death.

Ben Chan

It's too bad they couldn't bring back C.S. (spoilers) for this as he was on the Excelsior crew. But I guess that might've been a distraction.

Troy Convers

She had a hard life and career and I'm so glad that she managed to get some peace and professional redemption in later years. So what if she's a bit wooden; she was effectively blackballed from the industry and all because she clapped back against Roddenberry's sexism. Support your sisters.

Nolan

I'm always glad to see Janice Rand back in Star Trek, but also left with a feeling of melancholy. Rands actor Grace Lee Whitney's life story is... rough. A big TW on that.

Jonas

I liked this episode. I liked learning about Tuvok's backstory, and the virus that masks itself as a memory is a cool scifi idea.

Data Cable

DS9's 30th anniversary tribute aired 8 weeks later (and I'm sure Paula knows exactly what it was)
