I think I would like the episode better if the "people of faith" weren't so mean to Janeway.

Jonas

I didn't think they were mean at all. They were just meeting her where she was at. Gruff is not the same as unkind.

Jonas

The next is episode is a little dumb, but it's fun, and there will definitely be cameos you recognize in that one, too.

Ben Chan

Regarding the male guest star, I was hoping you wouldn't just stop at Buffy -- he was also in the TNG episode "Tin Man" as the main guest star there as well. I really liked this episode, but once the three oldies told Janeway what to do, as a viewer there was no doubt it would work which undermined the drama. However, the ending was saved by Janeway's reaction to the Doctor's medical gobbledygook. I thought that was very well done - you could see how empty all that science felt to her. Finding the answer was no longer satisfying. (the staging with Janeway sitting there as the camera pushed in while the Doctor was going on was great - good for you Paris!)

Jack Mingle

One of my all time favorites, I like to think that the "guide" that was with Janeway, was as she said an interpretor for the spirits, but I do not think she was a physical person, sort of like an interface unit that isn't physical matter but only appears within the sacred grounds. I like how it breaks down the absolutism you see in the Religion vs Science debate and reframes it into the truth that We'll never actually know everything, and that its better to admit that to yourself than pretend that you have all the answers. Logic has limits, check out the Incompleteness theory. Janeway has met Q and travelled through time and quantum size, it shouldn't take a giant leap to assume that there are other non-corporal entities that can manipulate different things like life and death, Riker did it as his time as Q.

Locoturbo

"Nechani Orthodox?! Why are you DOING this?" Janeway: "For a woman." "A woman?! Have you lost your mind?!" "Why can't you do anything like a NORMAL captain?" "Wait. Is this the group that goes around and mutilates tribbles?"

Jonas

Roxann Biggs-Dawson is just Roxann Dawson now, and she's a director and producer now. She directed a really great episode of the Foundation series on Apple TV last season.

(getting on a soap box) The core of science is the scientific method which imo has been grossly under utilized within scientific studies. it's been many years since I've had any science/enineering courses, but there was only one which students actually designed the experiment and that was in a group/class discussion. I asked a professor if it was unusual for undergraduate science major to only do this once and he replied most master students don't.

JD Robertson

Starships seriously need someone to coordinate with a planet before the crew on shore leave. Learn about laws and customs and hand out flyers to the crew. How many people have to die after touching the wrong flowerbed before they learn.

xeve

The scientific method at its core is disproving all other options while not disproving the core hypothesis, using logic and repeatable procedures to observe/collect imperical data.

xeve

Faith isn't bound by logic, imperical observations, nor the ability to have disprovable null hypothesis. When in the scope of the scientific method I'll defer to science. Outside that scope, I'll defer to the heart and/soul or faith (personal or shared). But, I just don't trust people really understand the limits of science or faith based on how it's taught. I'll hop off the soap box now.

Worse thing in Monopoly is when pass go and land on the income tax square. 😡😡😡

Makhiel

They were berating her for trusting in science, put her through useless trials, and only after she was completely demoralized ("I don't know what else to do") did they consider her ready.

Ben Chan

Are you calling Kes the Wesley of the show? (well, when you think about it...)

Ben Chan

One thing I appreciate about the ending is that rather than leave it ambiguous whether or not the spirits were present and leave it a mystery, (we've seen the cliched, "Wait... *was* it real? " wink at the audience ending a million times) they gave a solid scientific explanation leaving no room for doubt. But then the point was to make us question, "Is that all there is? Maybe we shouldn't stop looking once we get the solution -- maybe there's more to life and the universe beyond that."

Hell3Quin

Is she still an anti-vaxer?

Jonas

I dunno. 🤷

Hell3Quin

With the magistrate they went to great pains to show them as well meaning people and this was a tragedy that happened to Kes.

Hell3Quin

Btw when they send out young people (teens, late teens) to try to engage ppl in converting to their church etc, its actually a calculated tactic by said church to have them experience rudeness and dismissiveness towards their faith so they can keep them in the "In Group", like 'you see how they are?' They're not meant to succeed and are encouraged to be as in your face as possible at places like coffee shops etc so as to experience rejection and offensive language that they wouldn't be used to (and havent been prepared for by whatever workshopping they've gone through beforehand.

DavrosXV

Have either of you watched Stargate? Just curious as I'm a big fan of it and this was the first time I've ever heard you mention it.

tal goren

interestingly, in the Wesley episode, Picard specifically asked the initial away theme to find out if here are any unusual rules they must not break. for some reason the local just didn't briefed them correctly.
