Ooh, I've been waiting for this one! Trek fans had a lot of 'fun' with this episode in actual 2024, for obvious reasons.

Dax

This is both my favorite two-parter in the series, and also many times difficult to watch, as I have spent a significant amount of my adult life homeless (and most likely will be again soon given the destruction of social safety nets in the US). This episode has sadly only gotten more relevant over time. And for context, as this episode came out, there were politicians planning exactly what the Sanctuary Districts were. (and honestly all the "Safe Rest" homeless villages also act no different than the Sanctuary Districts are depicted. Just throwing poor and homeless people in camps for just trying to exist). Yet again, Trek being prescient to modern societal and political discourse.

Troy Convers

Did you hear the line at about 32 minutes? "We had to cancel our trip to the Alps because of the student protests in France" HOLY SHIT

Troy Convers

Its depressing that human nature is so predictable that writers can extrapolate a future that has the basic brushstrokes down.

Troy Convers

"Let me tell you something about Humans. They're a wonderful, friendly people, as long as their bellies are full and their holosuites are working. But take away their creature comforts, deprive them of food, sleep, sonic showers, put their lives in jeopardy over an extended period of time and those same friendly, intelligent, wonderful people... will become as nasty and as violent as the most bloodthirsty Klingon"

Billionaires are just hoarders. They are like the mythical dragons sleeping on their hoard of treasure they will never use.

Christopher Lamont Harris

I see this episode really upset you and I don't blame you but you got to do the best you can and I hope humanity will see the light and try to improve themselves but seeing how things are now I don't know what to say but hope, anyway you are not rambling, keep up the faith, and keep on circling

Makhiel

Yeah, this hits a bit a different now that I'm almost 40.

In 2024, and the couple years prior, my county had Safe Parking areas...one was an overcrowded cage between the animal shelter and jail..... Through lots of emails to various county and California state govt officials, we managed to get them shut down. But we still have to deal with overnight parking bans.... No place to go! I just got a traffic court judge to express sympathy for the Disabled and homeless, and stating she wished she could overturn the law.... Still fighting. SSI Disability does not allow enough to qualify for low income housing...... So much of this episode is so real, and also so far off, far more idealistic than reality...but we didn't have to have riots with hundreds of people dying........yet......... Oh, wait....just a bit different than expected, and far worse.... The fight goes on! I'm working on another email to all the California govt personnel.... I always loved this two parter.

At 27 minutes in the episode....is that guy playing with a toy Magic School Bus?? LOL 🤣 first time noticing. 🤣

Ugly Sonic

What even is Know-key? IDK how its even spelled but I've heard references to it my whole life. Never encountered it IRL. I know its a kind of food but I don't even know what country its from. What is it?

Gnocchi are italian dumplings, very yummy!

I had a feeling this would be a rough one for you. Part 1 and 2 are some of my favorite Trek. It told us about our immediate future and said "DO BETTER". I mean, we haven't yet, but today isn't the end. Trek in situations like this is sometimes more optimistic than maybe we deserve but the show has always been about keeping hope for tomorrow.

Ben Chan

Yeah, this episode hits a lot harder when it's not about "the future." We can no longer delude ourselves into thinking that those warnings about the future could never happen because they're kinda coming true one by one. On a completely different note, it's always nice to see Kira's "undercover civilian" outfit. (does she just have the one?)

Ryan

Ah, transporters. The cause of, and solution to, a lot of Star Fleet drama. Jadzia went to Star Fleet academy before being joined, so she passed Improv 101 on her own. But with the Dax symbiote sharing seven lifetimes of memories, she's is probably very good at "yes, and" As bad as this portrayal of 2024 is, reality is somehow worse. Their timeline had apathy, our timeline has malice. Love a good, self maintaining bootstrap paradox. The Temporal Prime Directive states "don't change recorded history," and the fact that 'recorded' is underlined is what always confuses cadets. ---- Living in Portland, OR, which is unfortunately notorious for its unhoused population, this episode strikes a chord. The local government is constantly wringing its hands about the "homeless problem" but continues to try the same half baked solutions again and again, and then turns around and coughs up $350 million in taxpayer money to renovate a sports arena owned by a multi-billionaire. New housing developments within the urban growth boundary are slightly denser suburbs, but aren't affordable. Yet somehow there's always more land for data centers. I don't agree with a lot of Christian mythology but they were 100% on the money by calling greed - inordinate desire to acquire or possess more than one needs - is absolute a deadly sin. But it's deadly to everyone around the sinner...

Mark Chrisco

This is the strength of Star Trek from the 60s to the present day. The vision that we will get past all this and be a better people for that.

Siva

A great two parter but sad to think about the state of things today.

Siva

Also, in terms of timeline... the Voyager premiere came right after this two parter. So while you are in the middle of Voyager season 3, DS9 was in the middle of their season 5. Not that it really matters, there aren't any crossovers. But just a fun note.

Ben Chan

"As bad as this portrayal of 2024 is, reality is somehow worse. Their timeline had apathy, our timeline has malice. " Hasn't it always been the case that the hateful few manage to do the most damage because apathy allows them to? The whole "evil succeeds when good people do nothing" of it all. I think the show focuses more on apathy because that's who the writers are trying to reach -- us, the silent majority. They know they're not going to change hateful people, but they might inspire some of us who have become complacent.
