CONTENT/TRIGGER WARNING.

We are taking today's episode reaction VERY seriously. With the mental attacks/r*pes of the crew on the enterprise, this is an episode that was extremely triggering. There will be a large discussion at the end of this reaction in reference to the content and Kat's reaction to it in the moment. We appreciate all of you who support us, especially when we are in a truly raw and vulnerable state.

I feel you so much on this. I am a rape victim and a guy, the man he attacked me was bigger and I was 17 and didn't have much of a chance to fight back so I just closed my eyes and .. k, sorry, I am a super emotional sort. I appreciate what you both said so much and I am so glad I found you on YT and became a Patron? Assume its called that. :) Gosh, Just am so overwhelmed by your compassion. :) ty!!

Dan Williams

Sometimes, an episode just has to be skipped, after it's been watched thrice... Without even watching, I know everything said, and heard it way too frelling often, from too many people. And me too. Not a night for ptsd.

emma_universe

I love TNG with all my heart, but I’ve never been able to make it through this episode. It was just too triggering. I almost didn’t watch here, but I’m so glad I did. Love to both of you 💜💜💜

Carrie Schwent

Like The Price before it, this is an ep of TNG that I will never watch again. It's far too triggering and I just can't. Thankfully I'm in a much healthier relationship, but this ep brings back too many bad feelings/memories.

Charles Terry

A few years too late but Inad is not Jev’s mother, nor Tarmin’s wife. She just works with them. That’s also why Jev refers to her by 1st name not by the title “mother”

Brian Hakala

Your reactions are always very genuine and raw so thank you for putting yourself out there like that!

Jarrod Wild

It is a given that this episode was going to provoke a big discussion. I'm gonna watch but knowing this was coming I considered skipping this reaction honestly. I do like this episode for what it is, but boy do I have to be in the right frame of mind to watch it, let alone watch along with people I know will be uncomfortable with the subject matter.

Bruce Bromley

This is certainly a very intense episode. One of the many in Season 5 that let Marina shine as an actress.

DarkAshtar

I didn't see a question mark, I thought it was a hook at first glance.

DarkAshtar

I have a terrible short term memory, but I have a pretty good long term memory. It's one of my autistic traits.

Brad Barter

As someone who watched this 30 years ago when it first aired it is surprising now that none of these episodes had a station disclaimer at least with a warning that some viewers may find the content disturbing and viewer discretion is strongly advised. Especially considering Star Trek (until most recently with Star Trek Picard etc.) has historically and generally continues to be considered a family show and many parents would feel comfortable allowing their kids to watch these shows on their own with no supervision. However, times and views have changed dramatically over the past few years but still a notation from the producers of Star Trek should've included something ahead of this episode for all networks etc.

Mike

There's an episode in season 6 that's arguably much worse then this, that honestly might be too much for Kat to try to react to.

Mike

None of us expect or want you guys to willingly feel bad just for the reactions. There's an episode of the X-files, a show I adored, that I only ever watched once becuase I refused to feel that way again. Even the best of shows can do this.

Bob Hughes

I just watched this episode a few weeks ago. At the time my reaction was intensely colored by thoughts of "what are Paula and Katrina going to do when they see this?". When I realized this was this week's episode I almost thought about skipping it. But I really wanted to know what you thought. I'm kind of amazed that way back then Network tv was willing to go this far, and also that they did not screw it up.

Joe Concepts

Definitely an episode I skip over. It's just too uncomfortable, and this subject just isn't a subject I like to see in a Star Trek show. The only thing of interest here to me is the Crusher/Picard scene, and they did a clever bait and switch by having the alien father act a bit creepy in the earliest scenes.

Bill

It was good to see them actually call it out as rape. They didn't try to warp it or talk around it, just... BAM! Thanks for toughing this one out, but totally understandable if you had just skipped it. Same goes for any other show and content. Take care of yourselves. Self-care if best care.

Colin 3of5

That was NOT a fun reaction. There were 2 things in the episode that I liked. 1 Keikos joy at recovering the memory of her grandmother and the time she spent with her. 2 Will Riker talking to Deanna as she lay comatose. As someone who sat byhis brothers bed waiting for him to wake up, after being involved in a car accident, it brought back a few memories. He fully recovered by the way. It was not nice and I did not enjoy watching Kat and Paula tramatise themselves watching the episode. I understand the value of facing the fears that events in the episode stirred up and not letting them own you, but it was not a nice thing to see.

Colin 3of5

I'm not going to put a like on the reaction, I do value your perspective and what you felt in the reaction. But I cannot put a like to it.

R. Chang

I don't have any personal history with these sorts of things, but I still think this episode is hard to watch. So I definitely don't begrudge anybody for not wanting to watch it. It would not have bothered me at all if you guys had decided to skip it. Take care of yourselves. Of course, I'll trust you guys to make those sorts of decisions for yourselves. You put this out and said that it was something you wanted to do, so I'll say that I enjoyed the reaction - it was probably the only way I would have rewatched this episode, so that was nice. I really liked the investigations in this episode. Riker's very pointed questioning at the beginning, the methodical approach of Geordi and Data, Dr. Crusher's research, etc. And most of the other nightmares didn't bother me that much because they were already traumatic memories. But Deanna's is rough. And for me, it's not even the sexual assault stuff (as horrible as that is), but that it was a happy, tender memory of someone she cared about and trusted that was perverted. That's really upsetting to me. Like, that memory is ruined forever now.

R. Chang

It's also one of the worse episodes, so there would be really no harm in skipping it. I know I do whenever I'm doing a rewatch.

Joe Concepts

I don't snack while watching these, but I am usually having lunch. I end up watching these episodes as soon as they come up because they come online just in time for my lunch hour at work!

Shelly

This episode made me see Riker differently. If you remember the Matter of Perspective episode, Riker has been in this situation before. These were all repressed memories that Jev stepped into, but he did not manipulate the dialogue of the memory. The things said between Troi and Riker seemed so plausible that I was convinced they happened between the two and Troi repressed the end of the interaction, only remembering the pleasant aspects of it. Riker's own repression of the interaction and demonstrable love for her isn't incongruent with the behavior unfortunately. I've known several men who were accused of similar things who act as if it was indeed a matter of Perspective, saying things like "I really love her, I would never hurt her!". It is my opinion that Jev did not pervert a happy memory but stepped inside a repressed, traumatic one. We don't want to think this about Riker but he's demonstrated a disregard for women's boundaries.

Dan Crucy

Patrick Stewart went bald at a young age, so he's had to wear a lot of wigs, especially early in his career. I remember watching the 1976 miniseries I, Claudius and being completely taken out of the moment every time Patrick Stewart and his wig appeared on screen.

John Welch

I am a male survivor of childhood sexual abuse. It took me years to say that aloud in a therapy session let alone post it to strangers in an internet comment section. I wouldn't have been able to do that even 5 or 6 years ago. I share it here today because I am incredibly moved by the girls willingness to publicly share their raw reactions in not just this video but to consistently do so throughout this reaction series to other episodes dealing with troubling subject matter, "Galaxy's Child" being just one example. My sincerest thanks to both of you, but Katrina in particular, as she seems one of those rare souls whose deep well of feeling can be both a source of great benefit and pain. But kudos also to Paula whos compassion and empathy emanates from the screen so strongly. For what it is worth and from a fellow survivor I say thank you girls and I hope you continue your journey through all Trek has to offer and continue to do so in strength and with a sense that you are not alone in the journey. I became a patron because I loved Star Trek and wanted to share in it's discovery by a newbie while I was bedridden for 4 months post cancer treatment. But I stayed a patron because of the character, insightfulness and strength of Paula and Katrina. Thank you both.

Kalhoun

Star Trek has always been good at holding a mirror up to society of the time it was made (and one of the reasons I love the shows). It's really important that these horrible things are confronted and not glossed over (like one of my favorite episodes "Family" in dealing with Picard's aftermath of being Locutus).

Mike

I don't want to spoil anything in these comments but we must be thinking of two different episodes, as I can't imagine the one I'm thinking of being considered bad.

Time Lord

And this is one of the biggest reasons why I still wanted to share this reaction with all of you. Thank you for your support and vulnerability. It is so greatly seen and appreciated. - Kat <3

Mark Ten

When I first watched the eps. it bothered me... a lot. Many instances of recovering repressed memories may be due to suggestibility, but as human beings we can repress/suppress some memories or more likely alter them. Esp children. I do believe that.

Mark Ten

Welp, might have been a better story if the villain wasnt so obvious... and it had turned out to have been the old woman... I didnt trust those braids!

John Welch

It's important that you always put your own emotional well being and mental health first but it's also important to know that you are not just talking in an empty room. You are heard, and we are the better for hearing you.

Joe Concepts

I can't believe that was a real memory of Riker. I mean, something like that happened but at the end? No way if she was acting like we saw there would Riker go further. Riker may be seen hitting on women sort of aggressively, but he'd back off if it was unwanted. I guess it is an interesting question though, because the truth of that memory isn't discussed at all.

Shelly

Do you really think the dialogue--"imzadi, we can't. Not while we work together on the same ship. No, we can't"--was falsely implanted by Jev? None of the other memories had falsified dialogue. Why would he step into everyone's repressed memories but only step inside a happy memory of Troi's to pervert it? It's more likely he did the same thing to all three: step into existing traumatic memories that had been repressed. You say this isn't possible for Riker's character yet the exact same thing was suggested in A Matter of Perspective. Picard's final dialogue of his episode was unusually specific: all of US have seeds of violence. We have reason to believe Riker thinks a woman "wants it" when she states outright that she doesn't.

EricH86

Like that one episode of Voyager with a very similar premise.

Matthew Berry

I am a male sexual abuse victim. I was abused when I was young by two different female teachers when I was in school, and I still (at 45) deal with the repercussions of that trauma. I even now still wake up from night-terrors linked to that. My loving wife knows of these events, and supports my healing and growth. But, the scars are there. They will likely never leave me. For this episode reaction, I watched all in one, as I was unsure if I could deal with it over multiple sections. I think though, I am done with watching this episode, for another 30 years. Thank you for your reaction of such a difficult episode. My heart and understanding goes out to you two ladies, and hope you future is much brighter than the negative events that have coloured your past. I think it’s not the last difficult one Kat, but I think it to be the worst of this kind. Hopefully, for you, the rest are easier to deal with. Lots of care and love from Canada.

Joe Concepts

I get the idea, but I feel like the writers wouldn’t really been suggesting Riker did that without addressing it or bringing it up at all again. It is definitely a little confusing as to what really went on. But as for A Matter of Perspective, I haven’t seen it in a while but I didn’t think the show suggested that Riker did anything worse than maybe flirting with a married woman.

Joe Concepts

One flaw an episodic show like this does have is that while addressing rape and assault is a valid thing to explore, it doesn’t come up again and we don’t see Troi or the others dealing with it later on. I always hate that about how the episode when Geordi is brainwashed ends as if he’ll be dealing with it a long time and then we have the TV reset button.

Shelly

I definitely recommend rewatching A Matter of Perspective. The woman in question in that episode is shakey, extremely upset and very triggered by Riker's presence. They leave it up to the audience to decide if she made the whole thing up, if it did happen but was merely flirting she misunderstood, or if he indeed forced himself upon her in a way that would justify her reaction.

Firefly24601

I think Paula's issue was more with the "hypnosis" method of retrieving those repressed memories. I don't think she was denying that repressed memories exist.

Raja

The ending of the repressed memory was definitely fabricated in each instance, not just Troi's. Jack Crusher's eyes didn't pop open in the morgue. A crewman in Engineering did not call Riker a murderer to his face.

Nolan

Oof. Yeah. I saw this on the docket the week or so before my eye surgery and knew based on the reaction to a certain episode last season that it'd be a rough one and I should probably put a warning out before my two week recovery time, just in case. I regret not being more forward with WHY it might be more difficult because it is fucking intense, in hindsight. So you know what, fuck it. Katrina, episode 16 of this season has a trigger warning for a character seriously considering suicide and discussions thereof. I know from previous reactions you've recently experienced trauma related to that, so I hope the episode is not too hard for you, or wasn't if I missed the filming cut off. And 5x17 also has a content warning about Conversion therapy, gender identity, homosexuality and societal views thereof. Sorry if people think that's spoilers, but I actually HATE seeing Katrina get caught off-guard by this stuff and collapse into herself. Not because I don't think she should do what she needs to to protect herself, but I feel like such a fucking intruder in those moments. I mean, seeing how things affect people is partially why we're all here, and if either of them are willing to show that part of them, then more power to em. But I still feel like I should give them the time they need and not just sit there gawping for the next reaction beat, ya know? It's strange, how seeing this episode when I was, what, 13? 14? it did not really make an impact on me. I guess I'd been lucky at that point to not have experienced or know anyone who had anything like that. It was just a story. One of the reasons I LOVE science fiction is how the fantastical elements of the worlds and the analogy-based story-telling gives me a separation between the reality and the fiction so it DOESN'T hit me as emotionally hard as some other more realistic shows have hit me in the past, shows that I remember not liking because it frightened or unsettled me. And yet, a LOT of shit I've watched in the past that I viewed as "Just a story" I'm now, later in life, looking at, feeling and experiencing in such new ways. I dunno if my Dad dying was the catalyst for some of this emotional growth, or just aging itself, but on the one hand, I can appreciate the narrative's depths much more, but on the other, it fucking sucks. There's an episode of DS9 that's all about losing a parent, and the first time I watched it, I was like, "yeah, that's a pretty sad one." The second time I watched it, was when it came up in my rewatch... a week after my father's funeral. I have NEVER and I don't think, I HOPE, will EVER cry that much at a TV show, nevermind STAR TREK as I did that episode. And I still cry harder at it than I do at anything. And I both love and hate that about it. I dunno if I could ever watch that with other people, but when I know it's coming up, I almost look forward to being back in that head space. To mourn again and to remember that. God knows how horrifying that would be if the trauma were related to THIS subject matter. Thank you Gals, so much for sharing. And being raw. And giving me new appreciation for this episode, and the way it can hit people. And you know what, good on this episode for at the end not trying to sugarcoat what this episode was, or hide in the analogy, but to come right out and SAY what it was about, and to use the straight up word. Alas, Trek does NOT avoid this well going forward in other series. And sometimes it drops the ball. But it is always willing to talk about it when it goes there, I don't think it's ever just been for a dramatic story beat... (except in some of the newer stuff where it, like most ideas brought up in those shows, is glossed over in favor of plot progression... and one of the movies) That is the power of Star Trek, and media in general. Discussing and exposing and making people okay with Hurt. It's why I love Wandavision for highlighting that, and the role of TV in that area. It's one of the reasons why Trek and TV is meaningful to me and so many. There is a responsibility in storytelling, not just to a series' lore or continuity or plot structure, but to the audience's emotional state. Entertainment is ALL ABOUT manipulating and playing on the emotions of those watching, and pushing limits, causing reactions. Sometimes it's about pushing too far to break a boundary but always to ensuring that even if the content is emotionally hard, there is a POINT to it, and the really good shows don't make the audience have to dig too hard to find that point, or justify that hard moment. This episode did. Doesn't make it any easier... but potentially, that is what makes it worthwhile. I hope the rest of this Star Trek journey doesn't hit as hard. As I said, sometimes it can be good to get an emotional gut punch, depending on the content/context, but you know, let's hope most of the next few weeks are more 'fun.' (Although I've looked at next weeks and... oh man, that boring ass one) Thank you again for being true in these reactions, and for sharing, seeya both next week.

Sal Sanchez

Ladies, as always, I LOVE ur reactions. However, I'm still a little unclear. Is Katrina liking Star Trek??? I can't tell...*wink* By the way, did u notice that they brought Jack Crusher back for a ONE SECOND appearance. The actual actor for a momentary flashback scene.

Shelly

It's only the very end of each memory that gets warped by Jev. We don't know that a crew member didn't call Riker a murderer to his face. Riker has been responsible for more deaths than just this one, so it must've been significantly traumatic for him to repress it. Were a crew member to have treated him like a murderer; that would do it. He could even have a "memory" of him saying it even if it didn't happen. In Crusher's memory, the only change was that Jack's face was suddenly Jev's. Everything else was a true memory of hers. Troi's memory was 5% pleasant and 95% traumatic. It would make no sense for only the 5% to have been a real memory and the rest fabricated.

Cool Engines

The Deanna & Worf moment at the end is the best moment of this episode!

AJ

You don't need my permission, approval, whatever-you-want-to-call-it, but looking after yourselves is absolutely a higher priority than the "purity" of your reactions. There is no issue with (for whatever show you may be watching at the time) with the fan "spoiling" the newb about content that might be difficult to deal with, regardless of what that reason might be.

Chris Lane

I was honestly surprised you didn't just skip this episode all together. Definitely have no issue with skipping of episodes that might be triggering to past trauma

Brett Whittaker

Far out I never remembered Deanna fighting the guy like that! I had to watch it twice!

Mark Ten

Ahh, thanks for that. Jumping to conclusions is the most exercise I get these days

Andrew Hogan

Pretty straightforward episode, not much else to say really. Maybe just a well done by the writing staff and actors.

Andrew Hogan

I was thinking the same thing, that’s a big thank you to him for a split second appearance.

Andrew Hogan

I strongly want to comment and discuss this topic here, but I do not feel it would be very productive, let’s just say I disagree with your absolute assessment of how Riker potentially acted.

R. Chang

Repressed memories exist, but there was a big trend in the 80s where recovering repressed memories was the hottest thing in pop psychology and it led to a ton of false memories, false accusations, criminal prosecutions and a whole ton of bad shit. Look up the McMartin preschool case for the most high profile example. It's incredibly fucked up and generally discredited the idea of repressed memories, at least where the victim has absolutely no memory of an event. Even the lesser cases are horrible to learn about. I heard an interview with a woman who basically was convinced by her therapist that her father had sexually abused her when, in reality, that never happened and how it ruined their relationship to this day even though she eventually realized what had happened and found a new therapist. As a psychology trend, it was really damaging to a lot of people.

trylikeafool

As a Riker/Troi shipper, I like this episode for that little glimpse of their relationship, but boy am I glad to have this episode over with, lol. I knew you both would react this way, and it’s not a pleasant episode in general. On to better ones this season.

trylikeafool

Yeah, I think you’re making a huge assumption and adding your own head canon to the episode.
