Gallifrey Gals get Smegged!

Mark Ten

Dwarfer from way back!

Ian Heslop

I was first....I can't imagine I'll be last!

Andrew Duffy

Nope cos as soon as I saw the title I came here to say it too 😊

Scribbles

Now you're talking my language! Who is over, and Star Trek and cartoons aren't my jam, but HELLLL YEAH, Red Dwarf! And yeah, Ian Heslop has a good name for it "Gallifrey Gals Get Smegged". You'll see.

Ian Heslop

It's a disgusting image when you think about it too hard but it's the only sensible option! The only other idea I had was "Gallifrey Gals Smoke Me A Kipper" but that'll take 4 series to make any sense!

Rowan Talmage

Omg are you serious?? I joined Patreon in the right month! This is my fave since I was like 12! So excited for you guys.

The Freshmaker

Oh boy I'm so excited. I haven't even started the episode yet, but Red Dwarf is one of my all time faves. I watched it as a kid because my mum found it funny and it definitely helped shape my humour. So regardless of where you end up falling on this show I'm looking forward to hearing more opinions on it.

michael mccafferty

Ooh, I haven't watched this show in twenty years. Kudos to whomever recommended it.

Yonatan

Aww hell yeah! Also, at some point around series 8 make sure to watch the Red Dwarf A to Z. There are so cameos that both of you will love.

Firefly24601

The second-in-command guy was in Dr Who S13 as a (somewhat naive) founder of UNIT, as well as in Downton Abbey.

Mab7373822

Oh my god what an exciting choice! This show gets so much better as time goes on too, there is some genuinely brilliant science fiction coming up as well as some really wonderful character evolution. Hope you enjoy it!

Mab7373822

But also, just to note, some humour elements will have dated worse than others. Most of it is fine however, but 1980s BBC attitudes might rarely appear.

Mark Ten

You have stumbled into a dark place. Welcome

Mark Ten

Not sure how the strike would affect this, but there is a British series called 'Blake's Seven'... Im just just sayin'

Colin 3of5

Kat, Paula. Resistance is futile "The Gallifreys Gals are getting Smegged"

Andrew Duffy

What you might find interesting/weird after you get to around S4/5 is that they also did novelisations but it’s not exactly the same as the show, they really flesh out the characters and you get to see listers rationale and thinking and you realise he really wasn’t stupid going into stasis and he’s a lot smarter than you ever see in the show. The show runners had a bit of falling out after S7/8 and split up so that’s the main reason for the gap, and you really see it in the books because they wrote the first two together, then the next two independently so it does go off into parallel timeline’s with the same characters

Seth Brower

Man, I feel old, I remember watching this when it would air on PBS growing up as episodes were coming out fresh. Look forward to seeing reactions to this great show.

Henchman Twenty1

I was hoping you'd do this show. Sir Patrick Stewart is a big fan! "Get Dwarfed" is good but another alternative is "Get Smegged". You'll understand as you watch the show. Have fun! PS: The show really starts to hit its prime at series 3 when they add a fourth character. Like most BBC shows each series has six episodes.

Chris Fone

I can tell you, Rob & Doug, the writers, wrote the pilot episode for this in 1983. They wanted to have the BBC make it, because you get more time with the characters in a half hour without showing ads in halfway through, but the Beeb rejected it…3 times. Why you may ask? Sci-fi was not well regarded by the Beeb through much of the 1980’s and the main part of the BBC, in London, weren’t interested. However…in BBC Manchester they’d just made a sitcom and wanted to make a second series. This never happened so there was this block of sitcom money needing to be put to use. The bosses of BBC Manchester didn’t want to anything conventional and so Red Dwarf finally got commissioned, in 1986. Production was supposed to start the next year but then a BBC electricians strike meant none of the shows got made, thankfully though it was remounted later that year. Given all these major hurdles this show, probably, shouldn’t have existed and certainly shouldn’t have become, something of a hit. Along with Dr Who, this is my other favourite BBC Sci-fi show and I’m so pleased you’ve stumbled upon this. Obviously it’s not perfect, this is a show that does show it’s age, occasionally, where some of the “lads” humour goes too far but hopefully the vast majority of it is acceptable for you and, of course, funny. Enjoy!

Dan Crucy

Another vote for 'Get smegged' :)

Josef Schiltz

What a lovely and wonderful surprise! Never expected this! AAAAAOooow! Another comment mentioned 'Blake's Seven' created by Terry Nation, the writer who created the Daleks. All for that! Craig Charles' - Lister - earliest TV appearances were on a magazine/consumer programme called That's Life. He's a comedian/actor/radio presenter/ DJ and poet. He has presented The Craig Charles Funk and Soul Show on BBC Radio 2 since 2002.

Peter Nolan

'Gallifrey Gals Get Smegged' seems an obvious choice but it's actually got a pretty rude, if obscure, meaning so maybe not. The team are often referred to as 'The Boys from the Dwarf' so maybe 'Gallifrey Gals from the Dwarf?'

Stuart Reed

Love this show and the reaction! Who would've thought that the strike would give us bonuses like this?

Martyn Hill

Please watch more Red Dwarf it was so much fun watching you react to that. I love watching you laugh to the show. Season1 is a little erratic, but the later seasons are extremely good

gobmob2000

Yes lets watch Red Dwarf! I think its also a good complimentary show to watch with BSG, because BSG is very dark and Red Dwarf will bring some much needed humor in your life while watching BSG.

Scribbles

Oh! Wait, now that I've watched all of your reaction, I have to say it's waaaayyy more than three seasons. It's 13. The show ran, with some pauses for a few years here and there, from 1988 to 2020. It's a very cool series, a sci-fi sitcom that comes up with some really ingenious ideas for sci-fi concepts.

Salix

Patrick Stewert is a big fan. Not too hard to find an interview with him (on youtube) that was on one of the season DVDs where he talks about the first time he saw the series and was either actually or almost on the phone with his lawyer to start suing because he thought they had just stolen TNG. But then he got it and put the phone down 🤣

Gregory

Yes Gals of the Dwarf!!!! This is the best long running British Sci-Fi sitcom and it deserves all the love I know the Gals are gonna bring to it!

John Savage

Love Red Dwarf hope you continue

Kevin Bartelen

I love this show, great cast, and great comedic deliveries. There's a reason why this show keeps getting brought back, even though they can't seem to hold on very long when they do.

BrightHeart

This is a great show remember watching this on Dave and Dave ja vu when I was young with my dad.

Stephen Braybrook

Gallifrey Gals get Smegged. If you keep watching you’ll fall in love with how silly and beautiful it is. You’ll also understand Matthew’s Britishness more.

Paul Flux

Wow, great surprise! Other vintage British sci-fi shows worth checking out include Blakes 7, Sapphire and Steel, Space 1999, Day of the Triffids.

Eric

God, I love the novels! They add so much to the characterization while also being extremely funny and surprisingly very poignant.

Eric

I agree the later seasons are much more polished, but there's just something about those first two seasons that I love.

Martyn Hill

Don't get me wrong I love the first two seasons and my favourite all time episode is in season 2, but I do find a few of the episodes to be weak by the standards of Red Dwarf, although even these have some very good moments

Peter Evans

Ooh, good stuff! I was the perfect age for Red Dwarf when it first came out, being about ten. Fans might gripe a little about the first couple of seasons but I actually really like them. The show keeps things fresh by changing things up a bit as it goes along, so don't worry about it feeling limited. I'm afraid I wasn't a fan of anything after Season 6, where it took a big break, but until that point it's nearly all good and from Season 3 onwards, pretty great. The show's a lot of fun, and definitely something not to take too seriously. By the way, the lady playing Kochanski in the opening episode is Clare Grogan who had a really fun Scottish new-wave pop band called 'Altered Images'. Some really good songs such as, 'See Those Eyes' and 'Don't Talk to Me About Love'.

Kirk Deighton

I had to go over my patreon budget and come back here early for the Dwarf. On the offchance you don't know what smeg is, do not call it 'Get Smegged' unless you're absolutely sure you want to do that.

Paul Flux

'Why is he American and nobody else is?' - probably because the budget would only stretch to one American actor!

Bruce Bromley

A Rimmer salute to Firefly and others for suggesting this great show. Ladies, I do how you enjoy this and continue with more season, I'd love to see how you react to their android that joins them in a later season. I know that both of you are familiar with Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. Have either of you seen the six episode BBC series? That might be a fun watch as well. Thank you, Gals, for this surprise. You made my week.

Eric

Pretty sure the guy who plays Petersen was also Rory's father on Doctor Who.

BrightHeart

Mentioned in the discord but also mention it here. Terry Farrell of DS9 fame actually was cast in a second pilot for a US version as Cat.

Myka Martinez

Just watched the reaction and I'm so excited that you're on board! I was at the edge of my seat the moment I realized you had NO idea what you were in for. 🤣 Watching y'alls slow-motion avalanche of baffled realization is some of the best reaction content you've created yet!!! (Also don't know if you caught it, but the opening overture was just the theme song slowed waaaaaaaaay down)

Jade Ellis

I'd left Patreon until we got back to new Who but saw this drop on You tube and had to come and sign back up immediately. can't wait for the reactions for this series.

StuCee

If you're looking from suggestions you could try 'Spaced' from 1999. Written by/starring Simon Pegg and Jessica Hynes, directed by Edgar Wright, also featuring 'voice of Darth Maul' Peter Serafinowicz. (It's pretty nerd-adjacent, but not actually sci-fi however).

Juzzie

Its an amazing show that shouldn't work. The BBC initally didn't really get it and sent a load of staff who didn't work on their big stuff. Its lead Craig Charles who plays Lister, had not really done any or much acting before and was a Poet and Presenter. Chris Barrie (Rimmer) was mainly knowen for impressions and voice work, and Danny John Jules (Cat) was an actor. It had no budget and was frequently over ambitious for what money it had. Its a classic and I love it. Production quality goes up season on season as they work out what to do with little money. Seasons 1 and 2 are shakey but still good and everything kicks off with a bang with season 3. :) I hope you keep going.

Nolan

"It's 6 episodes a series and ran for I think 3?" Lol. I watched this with my Dad when I was WAY too young. Even before I saw Star Trek. I might have been a gateway into Sci-fi for me, though I'm not sure. Some similarities to the later Futurama, but very much it's own thing.

Chris Neumann

I was literally about to start rewatching this series when you dropped this. I'm so glad that you dug it, it can be a real tricky show to get into. And lemme tell you, you haven't seen nothin' yet. The first two series are good, but the show takes off in series three upwards when they have money and experience to really spread their wings. The 2010s series (X-XII) even remind me of Futurama. So the American captain, Mac Macdonald, he was the "real American" in a bunch of shows during that era (he was the McDonald's cop in The Fifth Element), and he was actually the leader of the colony in Aliens, which is probably what got him cast in this (RD has HEAVY Alien influences in it, you'll really see that as the show goes on). It was real fun to see your reactions to the twists and turns, the beats of the pilot have been baked into my brain forever (I saw this as a kid). The reveal of Frankenstein and the time jump landed fantastically, I was pleased to see that. I do wish you had said what you THOUGHT the show was going to be before you started, you should do predictions on your next blind watches. Those are always fun (although maybe that counts as writing, so I don't know).

Bill

Thirteen, three... close enough ;)

Bruce Bromley

Is that one available anywhere? I know that the first American pilot is. With Jane Leeves of "Fraiser" as Holly.

Chris Neumann

I think there was only a five minute promo video of that, not a full episode (their attempt to salvage the ruins of project one). It was on the bootleg DVD with the full-length pilot, so it's probably on Youtube somewhere.

Bill

Gallifrey Gals Get Dwarfed. I'm here for it.

Mark Steckel

Awesome! Yes, please keep watching. Great show!

hrcaffee

What a happy find when I opened yt today 😄 I shouldn't be surprised this is such a comment magnet! 😅 Honestly surprised that neither of you had been ambushed with this show by a friend before. 90's natives, show of hands, who was expecting a PBS pledge break offering a book of Filk music (yes filk singing, for the old-heads maybe) including Blake's 7 songs as pledge gift?

Chris Neumann

Not the PBS pledge drive, but it never feels right without the CBS/Fox Video and BBC Video logos from the old VHS tapes.

Bruce Bromley

Mac Mcdonald lived in Europe. Around this first appearance in Dwarf, he was in Aliens, Superman IV and Batman.

Justin Craig

SPOILERS! geez... /s but not really, but a little.

Justin Craig

I used to watch this on TVO when I was a kid. It was for me right up there with ST:TNG because of the heart that was out into it and the absolute insanity that is these crew members. I have no plans on stopping being a Patron for you all. Keep doing what you are doing, we have faith in you to be the best of yourselves. There is no happiness without hardship to show the contrast between the two. Remember that friends. ✌️

BriefMortal

So thankful i grew up watching shows like Red Dwarf and Blackadder. I'm hyped now!

KylarStern1995

I am so ready for this I have suggested this to every reactor I follow both the few on patreon and the many on YouTube and it never gets enough traction to win polls. I am so excited to have this now in the schedule.

Hugo Fitzpatrick

Yes please I'd love you to pick this up, I dipped in and out of the classic series when it would re-run occasionally. Fond memories of some solid wacky sci-fi stories told through comedy. It hasn't always been available on streaming, and as I don't get access to the BCC iPlayer or any of the other British services it is hard to complete it all. That and I don't think it's always been a BCC only show as I think it moved to Dave or Scifi or something in the more recent years.

Nicholas Dreyer

A good show and one I love growing up. I heartily recommend Blackadder if you are looking at great British shows.

Mike

Excellent choice, I love this show!

tal goren

considering the BBC tendency for short series, I really don't understand how classic Who got to be as long as it was. that show was some kind of miracle.

tal goren

I remember watching it 20 years ago, didn't realize there was newer stuff. also I don't think I ever actually seen the first episode for some reason, so that was fun. in regard to the opening sequence, the BBC actually forced them to changed it because it made people think they were about to watch something serious.

Josef Schiltz

I tell you what, Paula and Kat, both being actors I would love to see a reaction of this nine minute behind the scenes of the BBC production I, Claudius, based upon the novel by Rupert Graves. It's called 'This Old TV Show Has Better Directing Than Anything Today' A fair few faces that you are familiar with turn up and this was back in 1976. I really hope that you can! If not practical then, at least, I hope you tune into it at your leisure. It's been posted by Moviewise. This series was big back then and I tuned in to BBC 2 every week to watch.

Dr Q Who

Especially Blackadder Goes Forth

Dr Q Who

Paula, we owe your British best friend a great deal for recommending you and Cathy react to this show, which is somewhat a British Star Trek: Lower Decks of the era. So happy that S1 E1 has already won you two over, which we promise you is only the tip of the iceberg for what's ahead...especially from season 3 which in 1989 premiered weeks before Doctor Who's original run sadly ended.

Paul Flux

By coincidence, BBC4 is repeating I Claudius on Wednesday nights at the moment. The first three episodes are up on BBC iplayer.

Josef Schiltz

Ah, right. I grabbed the box set a number of years ago. It's good to know that the series is being re-aired. Somewhat surprising as well.

Nicholas Dreyer

It just occurred to me that you may not know of the existence of Sharpe. One of the best shows we got in the UK starring Sean Bean. In fact it was the show that made Sean Bean a household name over here. A wonderful series of adaptations of Bernard Cornwell's Napoleonic books but done on a UK tv budget so they decided to make it as awesome as possible so you wouldn't notice.

Joshua Lou Friedman

Had to chime in here… as I’ve been saying this for many many years: While I’m equally passionate about both WHO and NEXGEN, it’s fair to say my love for RED DWARF might extend a smidge beyond them both put together, then again my history with the show is sooo long (my first time published was as a contributing author in a Red Dwarf Anthology novel whose proceeds went to charity). Beyond happy you two might be taking my one of my hands down, all-time favorite shows… Seasons 3 - 8 are the absolute best!!! And have to admit it all led up to one helluva movie!!! Trust me… this is merely the beginning. In fact, I’m envious that you both get to experience this going down this rabbit hole for the first time… and whoever mentioned using it as the levity needed to offset the incredibly dark tones of BATTLESTAR certainly knew what they were talking about as well! Anyway, just by giving this pilot a fair shake has made one of your proudest Patreons, one of your most happiest as well!! Cheers!

Wade Wallenstein

This is awesome! I came across Red Dwarf on PBS in the `90s and have been hooked ever since. You're going to love it!

Kieran B

Red Dwarf got me to sign up for the Patreon, love that you’re watching this. It was Red Dwarf that got me into Classic Who in the early 90s, used to go and get videos from the store as a kid but when they didn’t have any Red Dwarf I picked up Spearhead from Space. I knew about Who because it was just part of British culture still (I think my first introduction was a Dalek cake in my mum’s cookbook…). Really hope you watch the whole thing, it gets better and better. And look out for the TARDIS, it appears at some point (although very small) I’m an SA predominantly and striking too as many US productions film here in the UK. Most of the big agencies are supporting it too

Kieran B

Yeah it moved to Dave (which is owned by the BBC)

Kieran B

Oh and that hot dog shirt is epic and would be fitting for episode 4 (Waiting for God) of this season… no spoilers They really do get into some genuinely good sci-fi, even though it’s a comedy, the hologram also predates Trek by almost 10 years. It was based more on Dark Star (which led to Alien) rather than Star Trek - the whole ‘truckers in space’ thing, or miners in this case

Kieran B

The Captain is American to make it seem more international I suppose (seems fitting for a company operating in space), plus in my small hometown I know at least 5 Americans that live there or nearby, I’ve worked with Americans in office jobs and my girlfriend is American. So they do exist in the UK 😁 Coincidentally she had the same reaction as you when she first saw it “what did I just watch?!” For us it’s not that weird at all 😂

Craig O'Flaherty

FInally! I have been unable to watch any Patreon vids since this landed and have finally sorted it out. Ready to see how Lister, Rimmer and the gang are received. :)

James Wilson

Hey, signed up to Patreon for the Dwarf. I would recommend making it to at least the end of season 3. From there is gets a lot better though. I see some suggest “Get Smegged” for the tagline. But I would look up what Smeg (or Smegma, from which it is derived) actually means first. So long as you don’t mind, then Get Smegged works really well. But you gotta know what it means before you decide!

BazT47

I signed up for Red Dwarf so please do it to the end. Back to Earth (Season 9 mini series) is dreadful tho. So please do Seasons 1 to 8. 10 to 12 and then the movie called Red Dwarf The Promised Land which they made a couple of years ago!. They are also continuing to make it so as long as you do Red Dwarf i'm not going anywhere!. Live Long And Prosper Paula and Kat

Darryl Glynn

Bored now, so I've come back to watch this episode. I've just realised I didn't watch the full uncut version here. I watched it on YT. Anyway, Capt Hollister is played by Mac McDonald, and was on Aliens, Batman, and Death Wish 3. He is American.

Daryl Hudson

Mac McDonald who played captain hollister is amercan and played a cop in The Fifth Element with bruce willis

Troy Convers

If you want a gritty British Sci Fi series to watch after you've watched all of RD? Blake's 7. Created by Terry (Dr Who) Nation, it's basically Seven Samurai meets Mirror Universe Trek with dry British humour thrown in. Pretty please?

Frank Murphy

First watched red dwarf series one after a night at cubs that's old I am. Then later u I remember getting mini eggs at scouts before going home to watch a later series Truly one of the infinitely remarkable shows

SnabbKassa

The brief synopses on the Ganymede and Titan fan site are hilariously sardonic. Can you id the episodes from the descriptions, "gals": Lister is imprisoned, then Rimmer kills everyone. Lister takes some drugs and bakes a cake. Rimmer realises that he’s a prick. The crew attempt to seduce three corpses, and Rimmer exploits a mentally ill slave. Lister destroys Rimmer’s life and then wipes everyone’s memory. Holly endangers Lister’s life, so he fakes his own death to prove a point. Lister shags Rimmer’s mum. Kryten embarks on an inter-species relationship. Rimmer is imprisoned for murder, while Lister encourages a simulant to kill himself. etc.

SnabbKassa

They picked Chris Barrie for Rimmer over Alan Rickman

Emma Bruckner

Chris Barrie appeared in Lara Croft Tomb Raider as her assistant. He is also very accomplished vocal actor mimicking many voices. And did the Audio book additions to Red Dwarf Mac McDonald (Capt Hollister) appeared in The Fifth Element as the Taxi Driver

John Smith

Alan Rickman was a great actor; but in this case, I think the producers made the right call.

SnabbKassa

oh yes. it's who fits best that matters.
