Reminder, the Gals had not posted the first episode reaction yet when this was filmed!

Gregory

A smegging garbage pod!!

Bruce Bromley

Did the plow through the first six on a weekend? :-)

Graham Mills

3:00 It's huge. You've interpreted that correctly. The first book from the show "Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers" lists it as 3 MILES at the narrowest part of the hexagonal profile, 4 MILES at the widest and 5 MILES long. It's a mining ship (Thanks, Hol) belonging to The Jupiter Mining Corporation. You will occasionally see JMC written on things.

Bruce Bromley

The beginning of the backstories of the three. The next episode is my favorite of this season due to a certain guest star, In reacquainting myself with the series I rewatched the "Making of Season !" from the DVD. A great watch. Including an electrician's strike that delayed the filming of the show, As well as the places they had to get the studio audience from,

Brodie Vickers

Just wish that you could do 2 a week😄next ep, a very early appearance from Craig Ferguson! who you may remember as the previous Late Late Show host, and one of the best imo.

Henchman Twenty1

A bit of irony there that Lister (comma) an atheist (comma) turned out to be worshipped as god of the cat people. Monty Python's The Life of Brian is probably one of my favorite takes on (or digs at) religion. Just as the saying goes that "Pr0st1tut10n is the world's oldest profession" (comma) then religion is the world's oldest scam. PS (Colon) COMMA! Edit (colon) Part of my belief is that I'm not necessarily right in that belief and other people are not necessarily wrong. Everyone is entitled to their belief (comma) but not entitled to force it upon others.

Henchman Twenty1

When we see the ship and crew from before they all got wiped out I'm wondering how much it was influenced by movies such as Alien (the first one) or Wasteland with the whole blue collar sci-fi, gritty, grungy look and feel to it all.

James Wilson

The opening is meant to convey the sheer size of the ship, as are a lot of the shots between scenes. In some of them you can see a literal asteroid sticking out of the side of the ship, got lodged there in an incident and they just shut the area off and carried on. As far as I recall, its not mentioned or addressed in any way throughout the series and only really gets a passing mention in the books. Its just, there. The part at the front is supposed to be for scooping up or catching asteroids which are then mined for their resources.

Graham Mills

Aliens gave us a "lived in" future, rather than the "everything's shiny and new" future of a lot of prior sci-fi. Red Dwarf gave us a "worn out and nearly ready for the scrap heap" future.

Josef Schiltz

Craig Charles 'favourite' critique of Red Dwarf - as he recalls from memory. "This is the voyage of the starship Red Dwarf. It's mission to boldly go where many sitcoms have gone before, up it's own a...hole. Very at home in this television anatomy is Craig Charles. Where is this man from? Is he from a distant planet called 'Rent-a-Liverpudlian' or was he spontaneously generated by a TV screen? No matter. Charles, and this series, are heading for a sticky end." - "Twenty nine years!" - he adds with a grin!

Chris Neumann

When the first episode dropped, I noticed Kat's hot dog print top and thought how perfect it would be if they were wearing it for this episode (as I happened to be wearing Lister's London Jets shirt when you both surprised us with episode 1). It's so much fun watching this with you, these are so baked into my memory that it's great seeing genuine surprise and confusion when the episodes twist and turn, revealing backstory or introducing new concepts.

Chris Neumann

Oh, a HUGE Alien influence, one survivor of a blue-collar insterstellar trucking crew with a cat after a disaster kills everyone else on a massive industrial spaceship.

Kieran B

A lot of people are down on this episode but I love it

Kieran B

I said exactly the same thing

Mordredd

Watching you guys trying to puzzle out the garbage pod reminded me of my young self doing exactly that when this was first broadcast! Love it. I'm having a blast watching you guys watch this stuff. Holly admitted it was just garbage really early on but they could have gone in so many different directions and lets face it none of those other directions would have been funnier than letting everyone speculate like crazy and then pull out some rotten chicken at the end. Loved it then and now. Oh I totally forgot the philosophical toaster. I want one!!

Josef Schiltz

Paws for thought. One must never lapse in giving thanks for Crunchies. Emerge from your nap clean whiskered and unruffled, ears pricked for the call to sustenance. Do not resist an overfilled bowl, stomach issues can be resolved later. Upon the completion of your toilet, mannered and discrete retching is preferable and outside. Praise be to Cloister. Position your hat as to not look ridiculous. Fushal is the land of promise and promiscuity. MMEEeeOOW! Lookin' good! Strollin' down the mews! HEY! What's up, Pussycat? wWWwooOOooooOOw!

Kieran B

They based it on Dark Star that was the precursor to Alien - both involved Dan O’Bannon

Julie Kangas

Me too. This is one of my favorites from S1.

Julie Kangas

About the cats: I always thought that there was initial variability in the gene pool because a litter of kittens can all have different fathers. Second, the radiation leak wasn’t fatal in the cargo decks but the level was still higher than normal and caused a lot of mutations.

Julie Kangas

Ah, so you’re a waffle man

Raven Stromdans

Every series of Red Dwarf has one or two episodes I'm a bit "meh" on, not because I find them bad mind you but because I like all the other episodes that much more. "Waiting For God" is that one episode in Series 1. I think for this episode, it's the mood whiplash that gets me; the two plotlines separate are fine, but the way they're interlaced doesn't it do it for me for whatever reason. I do think this episode does lay important groundwork for some of the more interesting elements of Cat (and his species') backstory, for Rimmer's nearly religious belief in aliens and Lister as a generally nice, caring guy who saw his potential, was just like "that seems like too far to walk too early in the morning for me" and smegged off instead. The next two episodes are arguable some of the best written and most fun in the first two series and I'm really looking forward to you two experiencing them for the first time! Keep Calm and Smeg On, Gallifrey Gals!

pbaker

Lovely to see your positive reaction as Rob Grant (one of the writers) is on record saying it’s his least favourite of all. From the UK, Dwarfer since 1988. Loving the content.

Julie Kangas

It’s one of my favorites so YMMV as they say

Warren Smith

Also, there would have been a fair bit of genetic drift fairly early on, due to the near city-size of the cargo hold, and the fact that cats are usually fairly solitary. I think the cat race are probably one of the most interesting things in the series.

Robert Biviano

What is the meaning of existence? "Beats me do you want some toast?": sums up this show

Juzzie

That's the thing about Lister, he is disgusting and lazy, but he is very empathetic, and kind hearted.

Darryl Glynn

I've joined your Patron group just for this show. I love your reactions to it. Also, some of the characters seen in the first episode do appear in some of the future episodes. BTW, this show gets even better from season 3. ;)

Salix

From memory the part at the front was meant to be a RAM scoop. Basically a theoretical engine design. Collect particals from space. They get compressed down inside the ship. Fusion reaction. Then use that for propulsion. And I seem to remember someone saying on the DVDs that the asteroid is meant to be their. It's what makes it a mining ship. they are mining that asteroid and processing the materials. They travel back and forth in the solar system dropping off the refined raw materials at various planets. At least that's what I remember being said. Entirely possible I am miss remembering 🙃

Katy Robinson

Joined because I'm a dwarfer but I've been binging your DW content too! I've watched these episodes so many times that I can't even remember not knowing everything that's going to happen, so watching your reactions is fantastic :D

Kieran B

Likewise, have done the conventions and everything since I was a kid

PickettsChargingPort

Please give seasons two a chance, if possible. It's a big step up. I will say, though, that everything really gels in three. No spoilers, though.

Wanted to edit for typos accidently deleted... The thing to remember is that the reason incest increase the likelihood of birth defects, is because it increase the chance someone would get two copies of a defective recessive gene. In a specie like cats, where every birth produce a large number of offspring, the risk is smaller because there is less chance that the healthy version of the gene wouldn't be passed to the next generation,

Troy Convers

We've never seen Cat's people so far, have we?

SnabbKassa

I love Rimmer coming to that realisation so late that the credits are rolling.
