So happy to watch more RD with you both! The first and primarily second of the books goes into the concept of Better than Life and it's implications in much more detail

Scribbles

This is such a fabulous episode. I love the ones that dig into Rimmer's psyche, especially this one that looks at how he became what he is because of his treatment by his parents when he was little.

Jasper de Vries

A great episode. I don't think having Cat fantasize about Rimmer's dad insulting him makes sense, but it got a laugh and broke the tension of the scene which probably made it flow a little better.

Rob G

I think this was your best reaction yet, you gals are really getting invested in the series now and for good reason. Kryten will be back soon in series three. In this series I really hope you like Queeg500 which was my absolute favourite of the show after this one. Many more favourites followed :)

Rowan Talmage

The entire second Red Dwarf novel is essentially all the things you assumed would happen to people while using BTL.

Phil Birkett

I know why so many people bang on about series 3 being where it "starts" - and believe me I love series 3 and what follows - but I have a particular love for the first two, and especially series 2. I think it's the focus on generally humdrum matters (the early years are just about how bored and fed up they are, whereas things get a little more "exciting" and high concept later), and the very British, class-based humour and dynamic between Rimmer and Lister. Honestly, series 3 onwards is fantastic, don't get me wrong, but there's a certain something in the first two that kind of goes missing later - although episode 2 of series 3 is a sort of acknowledgement of and love letter to that original set-up; one *masterpiece* (and I do mean *masterpiece*) of an episode and then on to something a bit different.

"I'd prefer chicken." My favorite joke of the whole show. It often leaves me tongue-tied.

Glenn Dudley

Excellent reaction! I'm so glad you're enjoying Red Dwarf so much. It's said that British and American humour is very different but you're clearly enjoying the show so far! The next episode is one of my personal favourites - please do continue to react to more than one episode per week, the waiting is killing me, there's so much great stuff coming up and the effort to avoid spoilers is agony!

Bruce Bromley

What! I don't have to wait for another Thursday? Fantastic!. I I saw the thumbnail on YT I thought it was a repost of the last episode. Happy to be wrong. Also, Earlier I was a video with the music director of Dwarf. Among other great factoids, he reveals All the lyrics to the end title song. The episodes only play half the song. I'd get the link but there are spoilers to later series.

Paflad

Rimmer is a genuinely fascinating character in many respects. As we learn more of who he is, what *made him* who he is,and get glimpses of what could have been, he's kind of a tragedy. And a smeghead, obviously. A tragic smeghead.

Mr Kitty

I wonder if the basis of the Matrix movies was from someone watching this episode. Agent Smith said: "Did you know that the first Matrix was designed to be a perfect human world? Where none suffered, where everyone would be happy. It was a disaster. No one would accept the program."

Darryl Glynn

I'm having fun all over again, like 35 years later! BTW gals, can you turn the volume up a bit? Thankees. :-)

pbaker

What a genius episode. Still blown away by the creativity and character moments. The first two novels are easily available as audiobooks and are essential works.

Bruce Bromley

Paula and Kat, here are the full lyrics to "It's Cold Outside" It's cold outside There's no kind of atmosphere I'm all alone, more or less Let me fly far away from here Fun fun fun, in the sun sun sun I want to lie, shipwrecked and comatose Drinking fresh mango juice Gold fish shoals nibbling at my toes Fun fun fun in the sun sun sun Fun fun fun in the sun sun sun I pack my bags and head into hyperspace Where I'll succeed at time warp speeds Spend my days in ultraviolet rays Fun fun fun, in the sun sun sun We'll lock on course straight through the universe You and me and the galaxy Reach the stage where hyper-drive's engaged Fun fun fun, in the sun sun sun Fun fun fun, in the sun sun sun Source: LyricFind Songwriters: Howard Goodall Red Dwarf Intro/Dramatic Incidental 2 lyrics © Music Sales Corporation

Kryten is named after the character Crichton, in the 1968 TV Movie "The Admirable Crichton". Summary: A group of people are shipwrecked when their yacht runs aground on a South Pacific island. The usual hierarchy in an upper-class British family breaks down quickly when it becomes apparent that only the servant Crichton is capable of surviving on his own and he becomes the community's leader.

Raven Stromdans

"Better Than Life" is 100% my favorite episode of Series 2, partly for the jokes and partly for how much it solidifies just how screwed up Rimmer is as a character...and curiously, though it's a bit understated, how empathetic Lister is capable of being even though he basically despises Rimmer. I feel like just in these first two episodes of the new Series, we're getting unforeseen character depth from both Rimmer and Lister...and there's still a little bit more to come. Happy Travels, Gallifrey Gals and remember: Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers.

hrcaffee

Kat, you're never letting it go? Some of us haven't ever forgotten "See you later al...." in 3 decades! it the closest I'll ever be to understanding random drug flashbacks 😵😅

Kieran B

Excellent, there’s Last Human too after those

Travis Boyle

Klepto..... because the Gallifrey Gals have stolen our hearts....sorry I'll show myself out. Lol.

John Veitch

It was originally a play by J.M. Barrie from 1902. The version I saw was the 1957 film version starring Kenneth More. I'm not sure which version Rob & Doug would have been most familiar with (or if they just had a general idea of the premise).

Graham Mills

I admit my search had located J.M. Barrie as the playwright, but I was not aware of the 1957 film, although something in the depths of my brain tells me I did hear it to be a film they were referencing, so it could well be that one and not the 1968 version that my (admittedly not extensive) Google-fu came up with. Or my memory could be wrong again and they may have been referring to the original play. I dunno.

John Veitch

This and the next episode (which I'm sure the Gals have already seen, they just haven't uploaded it yet) are a big turning point for Rimmer's character, and his interactions with Lister.

Bruce Bromley

They're through Series Two, and more than likely started on Series Three if this two episode a week schedule is continuing.

Josef Schiltz

Smoothie. definitely a smoothie! 🤣

David Shadwell

You got it spot on about the potential addictiveness of a game like Better Than Life. The novelisation takes this storyline and expands on it in Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers and Better Than Life. The story line straddles both books with a very heartbreaking end to the first one. Also, the third book The Last Human also adds depth and makes the McGruder / Rimmer relationship less creepy and ummm rapey! I think the writers regretted the fact that Rimmer took advantage of a woman with concussion so expanded on it and made it very touching and sad as well.

Chris Bordeman

Next episoooodeee please! I need my Dwarf fix!!

Mark Ten

Only a "Rimmer" complains about Series vs Season!

John Veitch

Even Rob and Doug use the terms interchangeably in their commentaries.

Wagoo

There is a whole novel written by the Red Dwarf writers called "Better Than Life" that expands upon the concept for this episode.. and explores some of the problems that may arise that Paula brought up
