Have been looking forward to this one! This was the first episode I ever saw as a kid in 1993 (I think) and fell in love with the show (although 1-3 became my favourite series, at least the most rewatched - with particular episodes in 4 and 5 I absolutely love, including Holoship). There's one bit I'm certain you'll rightfully flag early on though.

It turned out that nothing in the universe is as hard as throwing a few bullets and expecting them to land within the camera frame. This episode won an Emmy despite Janet Street-Porter wanting to nix the script for being unfilmable the day after it had been filmed.

Sorry but I've never finished a chapstick...there must be like 50+ scattered around my house!! This was the episode that won the International Emmy! Are you going to be reacting to any more of the production documentaries or have you decided to stop these? And you're right - Chris Barrie is so underrated as an actor and impressionist. Sadly he doesn't seem to do any acting these days, apart from Red Dwarf. Danny seems to be the only one still acting nowadays - Craig's concentrating on being a DJ and Robert's got his youtube channel and his EV shows.

Bret Hart

First, let's take a moment to praise Kat's makeup. Glorious. I forgot how funny this episode is, especially the ricochet to lay out Kryten.

Kieran B

They did setup the idea of a dove program prior to the pistols with doves on them turning into doves

Chris Barrie did Spitting Image early on which was an iconic British satirical puppet show in the 80s and early 90s (and they brought it back recently) although that's more impressions. Robert Llewellyn has done VO too because he's one of approximately 3 actors doing all the voices in the game Discworld Noir. Have either of you read Discworld?

This episode is a lot of fun...and this is one of the seasons where they made an effort to maintain a certain continuity within the season itself, which I think y'all will end up appreciating. I believe this was one of the award winning episodes of the series - it won an International Emmy in 1994. You can really get a feel for the writers plumbing Star Trek, old and new, for ideas they could spin with their own flavor in mind; this was one of the few episodes that I personally could feel a very Star-Treky vibe to. As a note, there are few things I enoy more about Chris Barrie's delivery of a line in the show than his satisfied "Marvelous!" after indulging his Dangerous Dan McGrew skills on the saloon patrons. Keep Calm and Smeg On, Gallifrey Gals! Me and Mr. Flibble will be here waiting for the next episode, smoking a kipper over an open fire out on the range! YEE-HAW!

Raven Stromdans

On a personal note, I've never even come close to finishing a chapstick. I'm not sure I've ever even used one more than once or twice before losing track of it, so there's like a minefield of the bloody things all over my house.

Chris Fone

This is just a personal theory but I have a feeling this was the episode Patrick Stewart stumbled upon. Like you say this one has a lot of Star Trek elements in it. Chris Barrie hasn't done much voice over acting, I believe, but I know, around this time, in the 90's, he was providing voices and narration for lots of advers. Oh and by the way...I'm glad you liked this episode so much, this one just happened to win the International Emmy, the next year. I think the category was something like Best Short Form Comedy? Not bad eh?

Abigail

Yes, Chris did do a lot of VO work.

tal goren

Didn't I read somewhere that chapsticks really are addictive? or was it just an urban legend

HoratioMcSherry

If you watch back the scene where Chris Barrie is doing his American accent, I think this is the impression he used to voice the Ronald Reagan puppet on Spitting Image back in the 80s. 1) Because it works really well, and 2) RR used to act in Westerns. 🙂

Since everyone is pointing out that this is the episode that won Red Dwarf an International Emmy in 1994, I won't add to that. (ha-ha). I think most of the Red Dwarf cast are semi-retired, pretty much only doing Red Dwarf (when there's a reunion series or movie) and the odd project they find interesting. As for Chris Barrie specifically, he's one of those people that kind of front-loaded his career so he didn't have to hustle later. He was doing puppetry / voice work for "Spitting Image" and some radio shows before moving to on-camera acting. While filming Red Dwarf, he was the lead in another sitcom called "Brittas Empire", and at one point was one of the most prolific VO for ads in the UK. In the DVD commentary for some of the episodes the other cast members joke about how he was constantly on his cell phone between takes as a result of his advertising work.

The calm "Fluke hit" isn't a very clear signal that their ship is about to explode.. and they cut away from the simulant cockpit Very quickly when they're hit. Maybe they had to lose a few lines with everything that's jam packed into this episode!

John Veitch

The simulant crew do mention that the Dwarfers got in a "fluke hit" and plan to "take them down with us". Maybe budgetary restraints prevented them from making that clearer (and from making the simulants look more Borg-like, for that matter).

Darryl Glynn

Don't worry about lava damaging Starbug. It's crashed more times than a ZX81.

Sebastian Bodine

One hilarious behind the scenes story about this one: When Janet Porter running Art and Culture at the BBC sent a memo stating that this episode is out of budget and terrible; essentially demanding that work on this episode should be halted. The drawback being that shooting for the episode was already finished within the given budget and broke through to the US; winning a daytime Emmy. Side note: Chris Barrie did a lot voice work for the puppet satire show Spitting Image. If you want to hear his impression of Ronald Reagan, you should check out Genesis' music video for Land of Confusion.

Travis Boyle

This is a great episode. Another Star Trek influence on this episode was the TOS episode Spectre of the Gun. Not sure if this was made before or after A Fistful of Datas or not. Star Trek writers were also fans of Red Dwarf, DS9 had Jupiter Mining Corporation and Diva Droid on one of its background signs for lists of businesses on the Promenade. Kat your shirt is really cool. Perfect match to reacting to all the sci-fi shows you Gals cover. Also didn't think I would laugh to a conversation about Chap Stick use but here we are.

Rime Pendragon

Don't know if anybody mentioned it, but this episode won an Emmy....

"Goody two shoes. Beddy bye bows time again!"

There's a line in this episode that in all my many re-watches of the show over the years has flown by as just another gag but when I watched it again last night in preparation for this reaction it leapt out at me and I immediately became trepidatious about how the gals would respond to it. The synchronised disgusted groan and then immediately moving on was kinder than I had dared hope. I imagine you know the line I mean.

Starromania72

I'm thinking (if not flat-out imagining) there was almost a trope of British comedy shows in the 70s and 80s doing a western pastiche with this 'flavour' (for want of a better word) of re-enactment - a kind of Spaghetti Hoops Western if you will. The obvious ones to me are Benny Hill's "Fastest Milkman in the West" sketch, The Goodies' "Bunfight at the OK Tea Rooms" and The Comic Strip Presents' "A Fistful of Travellers' Cheques" - but I'm sure the various sketch shows did at least one skit in a saloon.

Sid Hardman

Your playback is fast by like 0.1 seconds, I'm having to pause every so often to resync. Is anyone else having this issue? I'm watching RD on Tubi.

Lizbeth Marcs

The DVDs line up perfectly, which makes me think that's their source. It'll be interesting when they get to Series X, because the NTSC versions run a little slower than the PAL and online versions. That's the only series where I've found it to be an issue.

David Shadwell

Yes, this does present a wide range of 'American' accents from it's British cast. However, Loretta (the psychopathic, schizophrenic femme fatale) was played by Jennifer Calvert, who was born in...... Canada. Think she had appeared with Danny in a kids TV show called Spatz before this? Great episode but it put a real strain on Chris and Craig's already shaky relationship. It will be brought up in the season doc so will say no more. You can probably find it on YouTube as told by Robert Llewellyn as he tells the story so well.

John Veitch

In a discussion on the "Ganymede & Titan" fan forums, people reckoned that something that makes this episode one of the best of s6 is the relative lack of stock/running gags and Blackadder-esque simile jokes.

Katrine Myra

I'm glad you liked this one! It's never been one of my favorites, but the good thing about that is that I hadn't seen it in a while, and I loved rewatching it with your perspective. What I do enjoy about this episode is how AMAZING Chris looks in his cowboy costume, and how relatively unflattering Craig looks. He genuinely seems uncomfortable. I think there's some backstory there, but I forget...

Very belatedly but one of Chris Barrie's uniquely entertaining VO performances was as the lead in the videogame Simon the Sorcerer (think very British Monkey Island... in an enchanted forest). Just a great comedy point and click adventure for anyone into those! (the sequel is also fun but sadly he didn't reprise his role - they had to get an(other) impersonator in who did a pretty fine Barrie)
