From my own limited understanding of what Jesse is talking about - its even wilder. Because yes the Universe is accelerating. But for millions of years... it wasn't. Big Bang happens, there's acceleration but almost immediately it levels out to a constant. But then at some point millions of years later it begins accelerating again - and hasn't stopped since. What caused that? Dark Energy is one suggestion - but going down that rabbit hole leads us to another problem. Average energy in the Universe should be decreasing, right? Its not. Its constant. Despite the apparent expansion of the Universe. Yet the source of that energy can't be seen. And the apparent contradiction in the chaotic nature of thousands of large objects orbiting each other at high speed not being as chaotic as it should be could be explained by Dark Matter - if we ever figure out if it even exists. Science is wild. Clearly even our very best don't really understand the fundamentals of reality - and merely try to explain what we can observe with educated guesses (like, genuine educated guessed, not wild conjecture - tested hypothesises that are put through the ringer to find any flaws). And occasionally, no matter how right we think we are about something - we find out we're actually completely wrong. Maybe one day humanity will figure things out. But I doubt I'll live to see the day. And even if I do - I won't understand it, because I'm only a slightly above average nerdling on the internet, not a peer-reviewed scientist.
